Reading is Fun

Objectives:

By the end of the workshop the students will be able to:

Comprehend a text by using the SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Review)
strategy.
Use predictions, give their own ideas and make questions in order to understand a text.

Strategies: predicting, confirming/adjusting predictions, checking for vocabulary

Pre-reading Stage (SURVEY and QUESTION)

Predicting
In pairs, students look at the cover of the book and skim through the text in order to
predict what the story is about.
Questioning
The students skim through the reading passage and make questions about the story.

While-reading Stage (READ and RECITE)

Checking for Vocabulary


The students read the excerpt and if there are difficult words, they highlight the unknown
words and then they transfer them in the vocabulary journal.
Re-read
If students have doubts after reading the passage they can re-read the text and make notes
about important events.
Confirm and adjust predictions
After reading the text students fill the recite chart with important information about the
text they read, it is necessary to take into account the questions and the predictions made
before in order to integrate the two stages pre and while reading.

Post-reading stage (REVIEW)

Written expression and summarizing


Students complete the task by summarizing the story they read in a graphic organizer
including the title and dividing the story into introduction, body and ending.

Pre-reading stage

Survey

1. Look at the title and skim through the text and give main ideas about the text

Question

2. Skim through the text and make questions about the reading, use WH questions.

Example: What, who, when, how, where.


While-reading stage

Read

3. Read the following text and highlight important vocabulary

Recite

4. After reading the text, write important information about the text and confirm your predictions
made previously.

5. Transfer all the vocabulary to the vocabulary journal.


Post-reading stage

Review

6. Summarize the story you read in the following graphic organizer, include title, introduction,
body and ending
