Rope Game (Team Building) Lesson Plan

Student Learning Outcomes
1. SWiBAT: gain a better understanding of how to work with others
2. SWiBAT: teach and learn patience and leadership while being in the classroom.
Connections to Student Characteristics
The first learning outcome addresses the importance of working with others
cooperatively.
The second learning outcome addresses the ways future teachers learn how to practice
being patient with their students and also take on listening skills.

Set-Up, Materials Needed, etc.


Fabric or packing rope (still searching for rope)

Team building activity[*] - 25 Minutes Total


1. (Overview) -
a. Students will get an introduction from the facilitator
b. Ask students to introduce themselves to the facilitator and to the class
1. Whats your name?
2. Major?
3. CSUF or another school
2. Start off with instructions of team building activity
. Morgan will start going over instructions of the game
a. Morgan will form 7 groups of 6 and 1 group of 5
b. Morgan will begin guiding students on how the activity is supposed to run.
c. The object of the game is for every person in the group should be able to touch the knot
in the rope. Each rope will have a knot. The rope will rotate as many times as I direct them to.
This game is a process of problem solving, communication, and leadership.

3. Active Experimentation Large group (15 minutes) (MORGAN WILL DESCRIBE


CLASS ACTIVITY)
. Inform students that the knot will need to touch your hands through the process of this
activity.
a. Afterwards, I will let students know that I will direct them on which way to rotate the
rope.
b. First rotation: Turn the rope three times to the right, once you're finished put your rope
in the air.
c. Second rotation: Turn the rope 2 times to the right and 1 time to the left.
D. Third rotation: Turn the rope 1 to the right, 1 to the left, 1 to the right, and 1 to the left
again.
E. Object is which team will win, but also which team was able to work together.
1. Final Debriefing Large Group (5 minutes)
. Ask students to reflect on the activity and what skills were presented in this team
building activity.
What did they learn?
What skills were presented in the team building activity?
How can those skills be applied in your classroom?

48 small pieces of rope

Team building activity[*] - 20 Minutes Total


- Start off with instructions of team building activity
. Morgan will start going over instructions of the game
a. Morgan will form 7 groups of 6 and 1 group of 5
b. Morgan will begin guiding students on how the activity is supposed to run.
c. The object of the game is to have every person in the group to have a rope in their hand.
Using only one hand. The purpose of the game is to form a knot. You can go over or under a
person to form a knot. The rule is that students cannot let go of their rope when forming a knot.
If they let go of their rope, the group will have to start over.

3. Active Experimentation Large group (15 minutes)


. Direct students to pick up one end of the rope, and other students will do the same.
a. Afterwards, I will direct students to form a knot. (5 minutes)
b. Once they have formed a knot, I will direct them to put the knot on the floor.
c. Next, I will have groups rotate to a different knot.
D. The group that rotated to another group's knot will have to un-knot their rope. (5-7
minutes) Whichever group un-knot the rope wins.
E. The purpose of un-knotting the rope is to listen, create leadership skills, and trust their
teammates
2. Final Debriefing Large Group (5 minutes)
. Ask students to reflect on the activity and what skills were presented in this team
building activity.
