Surreal Story

It was Saturday night. Joanna clicked off the TVthe game had been brutal, and
everyone was deeply depressed.
Mark, Joannas older brother, broke the silence. Lets go walk this off. Mark and
Joanna had come to Jacobs house to watch the game. Mark and Jacob were best friends since
middle school and it had become their tradition to watch the Super Bowl together every year.
This year however, the team they had rooted for lost. As the three of them trudged towards the
door, Violet approached them holding something behind her with a slight smirk on her face.
You guys still bummed about the game? Cmon, its just a bunch of sweaty guys playing with
balls.
Violet, Jacobs younger sister, had no interest in football, or any sports whatsoever.
Violet was an eccentric recluse during the game shed been locked in her room on her laptop
surfing the web. Her interests were pretty obscure. She was enamored by the occult, and enticed
by anything creepy or disturbing. Despite her quirks, Joanna always admired Violets unique
interests and has had a crush on her for a while. Although she was too afraid to admit it, Joanna
found Violets affinity to all things strange and creepy oddly charming.
Violet exposed what she had been holding behind her, it was an Ouija board. Theres an
abandoned amusement park a few miles away from here, and I heard its haunted. Lets go talk
to some ghosts! she exclaimed with a giddy smile. Jacob groaned, Not another one of your
creepy little adventures. Mark looked uneasyhe wasnt particularly fond of the paranormal.
Joanna, seeing this as an opportunity to spend some time with Violet, convinced the guys to
come along. As long as the dog comes with us. Mark said, feeling a bit more comfortable with
the idea of a late night adventure. With nothing better to do, the four of them plus Biscuit,
Jacobs German Shepard, rolled out of the driveway in Jacobs worn out Honda Civic on their
way to the eerie destination.
In the car Violet read aloud an article on her tablet that described the abandoned park in
horrifying detail. Candle Cove closed in 1998 due to numerous complaints that the park was
very unsafe. Faulty wiring on rides, sketchy staff, and what carnival goers described as shadow
people that would sit beside them on rides. Tragic deaths took place at the park as well. A five-
year-old girls scalp was ripped clean off on The Twister, and a mans head was decapitated by
a sharp metal rod on Aichmophobia. Many more deaths took place soon after. Locals were
relieved when the park finally closed. Now anyone who dares to explore it goes missing or ends
up dead. Im already regretting this. Jacob said sighing as they pulled up to the infamous

park. Joanna had heard of the carnivals closing although she was quite young when it did. Some
big company was going to build a shopping center in its place but construction was never
completed under mysterious circumstances. Dont worry about it Jake, most of those deaths are
just rumors. Or are they? Violet said as she snickered.
The desolate parking lot was dimly lit. Empty beer cans, garbage bags and broken glass
littered the place. The pungent smell of rotting meat filled the air. Jacob got a couple cans of Bud
Light out from his trunk and passed them out. Biscuit started to bark and growl as they get closer
to the park entrance. There was a security guard asleep by the barbed wire fence that surrounded
the entire park. Violet signaled to a backdoor leading into the park away from the sleeping guard
who couldnt be bothered to do his job. This way. she said with a loud whisper. As all four of
them plus Biscuit entered the park, they heard faint, heavily distorted carnival music in the
distance. The music sent chills down Marks spine, but it intrigued Violet. Where do you think
its coming from? she said with a grin. Candle Cove was so grey, so colorless it couldve made
even the happiest person miserable. All the rides were moldy and rusted the smell of rotting
meat permeated everything. There was a thick fog looming over the whole park even though the
air was clear just moments before outside the park. It seemed as if they had just walked into Hell.
Even with the grim and dreary scenery, Violet was filled with joy.
Violet immediately set the Ouija board down on the ground as everyone sat around it. Is
anyone here with us? asked Violet as everyone held on to the planchette. At first it was eerily
silent, then suddenly the planchette violently jerked toward random numbers and letters. Mark
screamed. Joanna and Violet gave each other a terrified look, but Jacob started laughing. He was
purposely moving the planchette to get a reaction out of Mark, who was easily flustered. Violet,
disappointed, tried again to summon the unknown spirits that supposedly inhabited the park but
with no luck. Joannas vision started to get spotty and blurry. For a mere second, she saw a faint
image of her name written in blood. Her vision returned to normal after Violet finally put the
board away. Too frightened to disclose what she had just envisioned to her friends, Joanna kept
what she saw to herself. Mark and Jacob quickly lost interest and sat on the rusted, moldy
carousel, as they took a few sips of beer. They started to get a bit tipsy and talked about the game
and how awful the results were. Upset that the Ouija board wasnt working, Violet grabbed
Joannas hand dragging her deeper into the park as she yelled back at Mark and Jacob, You two
have fun getting drunk while Joanna and I find some ghosts!
Violet and Joanna slowly walked in silence deeper into the park as they sipped on some
Bud Light. The park was a labyrinth and it seemed as if they were getting lost but Joanna didnt
mind as long as she was with Violet. However, Joanna couldnt help but notice the fog was
getting heavier and the landscape was getting duller. Although there was no apparent danger, the
further they got into the park, the more panicked Joanna felt. Violet broke the silence. Im glad
you came today. I know youre not the biggest fan of this stuff but it means a lot. Im glad I
came too. Joanna replied, a bit more relaxed. After another short silence Joanna, with a sudden
surge of courage, stopped Violet. I I really like you Violet. Joanna said looking at Violet
with a shy smile. Violet froze with a horrified look on her face. Joanna was confused. Did Violet

not feel the same way about her? Even worse was she disgusted by the idea of them being
together? Joanna quickly noticed Violet wasnt looking at her, but just behind her.
Joanna turned around to see possibly the most disturbing sight she had ever seen. An
ugly, grotesque humanoid creature stared back at them with its pitch black eyes. The thing was
on all fours with an arched back and spider-like appendages. The creatures face was that of a
little girl but it was turned upside down its scalp completely torn off. It looked like it was in
terrible pain. Want to go for a ride? the creature said in the most terrifying voice. It sounded
like five people saying it at exactly the same time, with some deep and some higher pitched
voices. Violet grabbed Joanna and tried to run toward Mark and Jacobs direction to get away
from the thing but the creature latched onto Violet. Violet let out a blood curdling scream as the
creature tore through her body. Violets eyes, once so full of life and wonder were now just as
dull and lifeless as the park. Joanna watched wide-eyed, and in horror as the one she had just
confessed her affection to was being mutilated by a disfigured creature. Violets corpse was
horrifically twisted and contorted. She was unrecognizable now just as ugly and grotesque as
the creature that had just torn her apart. Joanna felt someone grab her and pull her into a car it
was Jacob. He looked terrified. Mark was hysterically crying in the back seat. Mark and Jacob
were alarmed when they saw black silhouettes with red eyes appear on the other horses on the
carousel. Black silhouettes in the shape of wolves maimed Biscuit and ate his eyes, that were just
bloody sockets now. Mark and Jacob hid behind one of the horses in the carousel when they saw
the grotesque creature crawling and limping toward Violet and Joannas direction. The filthy,
revolting sight was enough to sober them up. The whole park was engulfed in darkness it was
pitch black and the heavily distorted carnival music grew louder. The headlights of the Honda
Civic were their only light source. Jacob sped toward the back gate he intended to run over it in
order to get out of this hell.
Joanna couldnt speak after the incident. In fact, she never spoke again. She went into a
permanent state of shock after seeing Violet disemboweled by that creature. She had spent years
in a psychiatric ward, plagued by horrible nightmares of Candle Cove. In one of her nightmares
she was back at the park cornered by the terrifying creature that killed Violet except this time
the creature had Violets face.
Jacob hung himself in his college dorm a couple years after the incident. The guilt of his
sisters death ate him up inside he felt he was responsible for it somehow. Mark discovered
Jacobs body and was deeply disturbed after the incident. Candle Cove took someone Joanna had
cared about deeply. Although Joanna had been recovering, she could never get the image of
Violets mangled corpse out of her head.
