-ITINERARY-
Day 1, September 22, Tuesday: Depart USA
Today: Depart Chicago OHare International Airport via Lufthansa for our overseas
journey to Munich, Germany.
Complimentary meals and beverages will be served aloft. (D,B)
Day 5, September 26, Saturday: Salzburg and Sound of Music Sites | Evening
Rehearsal at Salzburg Cathedral
Morning: Buffet breakfast at hotel.
Begin our day with a visit to the village of Oberndorf to see
the Silent Night Chapel which marks the place where the
beloved Christmas carol was first performed on Christmas
Eve in 1818. Continue to Leopoldskron to see the faade of
the castle which appeared as part of the Trapp home in the
famous film, The Sound of Music. Continue on to the
Austrian Lake District, and visit the Basilica in Mondsee
where the wedding of Maria and Captain von Trapp was
filmed. Enjoy St. Gilgen on Lake Wolfgang, a lakeside town
which offers one of the best known landscapes of the Salzkammergut. See the
Mozart fountain on the Mozartplatz in St. Gilgen which shows the young Mozart
playing the violin, surrounded by birds spouting water. Independent lunch.
Afternoon: This afternoon, enjoy a guided tour of Salzburgs sights along Getreidegasse, the
citys pedestrian street, lined with authentic 17th and 18th century buildings
including the house where Mozart was born. View Monchsberg with the fortress
Hohensalzburg, which overlooks the city. Built into
the side of Monchsberg is the Salzburg
Festspiedlhaus, home of the famous Salzburg Festival
Operas. See Residenzplatz, the center square of
Salzburg, dominated by the dynamic sculpture of the
Residenzbrunnen, the largest Baroque fountain north
of the Alps. The Residenz building, built in 1596, was
once the palace of the Bishops. Nearby stands the
Cathedral dating from 1614. Visit St. Peters Abbey,
next to the cemetery portrayed in The Sound of Music
and where many of Mozarts religious works
premiered. Independent dinner.
Evening: Evening (choir members only): Choir rehearsal with Prof. Janos Czifra, Director
of Music of Salzburg Cathedral.
