END SEMESTER EXAMINATION (DEC. 2013)
SUBJECT: ENGG.CHEMISTRY (CHM-101)
______________________________________________________________________________
Time: 3 Hours Date: Max. Marks: 50
NOTE: Answer any five full questions. Draw diagrams, equations or examples wherever necessary

1 A. Explain the construction, working and applications of saturated calomel electrode. Show
that its electrode potential is a function of electrolyte concentration.
B. i) Write the cell reaction and calculate the standard potential of the hydrogen-oxygen fuel
cell. The Eo values are 0.4 V and + 0.83 V for the hydrogen and oxygen half cells
respectively.
ii) Explain the principle of application of liquid crystals in display systems.
C. Justify the following statements;
i) Corrosion of a specimen can be controlled using an impressed current.
ii) Lithium batteries use non - aqueous solvents as electrolytes. (4+4+2)
2 A. Describe the construction, and working of the following batteries;
i) Li- CuS ii) Ni Cd
B. i) A silver electrode dipped in 1 M solution of AgNO3 was connected by salt bridge to a
copper electrode dipped in the effluent sample. The cell potential measured was 0.52 V.
What is the concentration of Cu 2+ ions in the sample? [ Eo Ag+/Ag = 0.8 V and and
Eo Cu2+ / Cu = 0.34 V]
ii) Describe the manufacture of water gas. Mention its use.
C. Identify and explain the form of corrosion in the following;
a) Pickle cannot be stored in stainless steel containers.
b) Ruptured tin coat on an iron object. (4+4+2)

3 A. Explain the electrochemical theory of corrosion. Describe how anodic inhibitors can help
minimize corrosion.
B. i) Calculate GCV and NCV of a fuel which gave the following results in the Boys
calorimeter: volume of the fuel burnt = 0.16 m3, mass of cooling water = 20 kg,
temperature of inlet water = 26o C, temperature of outlet water = 38o C, mass of
condensed steam during combustion = 0.014 kg, latent heat of condensation = 580
kcals/kg.
ii) Discuss the classification of polymers based on their response to heat. Distinguish the
two types.
C. Give reasons for the following;
i) Galvanic attack may be prevented by avoiding direct contact between dissimilar
metals.
ii) Modern maintenance - free lead acid batteries do not have vents. (4+4+2)
4 A. Explain the electrolessplating of copper. What are the advantages of it over
electroplating? Describe the additive process of fabrication of PCB.
B. i) A sample consists of an equimolar mixture of polymer molecules M1 = 15.5 Kgmol-1
M2 = 13.7 Kgmol-1 and M3 = 17.2 kgmol-1. Calculate the number average and weight
average molecular weights of the polymer.
ii) Explain the effects of nature of metal and temperature on corrosion
C. Differentiate between the following;
i) cracking and reforming processes
ii) thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystals (4+4+2)

5 A. Describe the hot lime soda process of water softening. Mention its advantages and
disadvantages.
B. i) Explain why glass electrode functions effectively only at pH range 2 to 10
ii) Define decomposition potential. Explain its determination.
C. When exactly 2 g of coal sample was heated in a silica crucible at 110 o C, the residue
weighed 1.915 g. The crucible was then covered with a vented lid and heated strongly for
7 minutes and the residue weighed 1.028 g. The crucible was then heated without the
cover until a constant weight of the residue was obtained. The residue weighed 0.345 g.
Calculate the % results of the proximate analysis.
(4+4+2)

6 A. i) Write the free radical mechanism of polymerization of methyl methacrylate.

ii) Justify the following;
a) Presence of hydrogen bond and side groups influence the Tg of a polymer.
b) Higher percentage of volatile matter in coal is undesirable
B. i) The emf measured of the cell Cd(s) /CdCl2 2.5H2O (aq) AgCl(s) / Ag at 298 K and 273
K are 0.6753 and 0.6915 V respectively. Calculate (E/ T), G, S, H for the reaction
at 298 K.
