Tei Shi Takes on Her Fear I feel like Im

of the Dark in Introspective

always living
between two
polarities.

Debut Album Crawl Space

Argentine pop artist Valerie Teicher,
known to her fans as Tei Shi, attacks
her personal demons head on in her
mesmerizing debut album, Crawl Space.
The title of her debut LP was inspired
by her childhood fear of the dark,
which she overcame by hiding in the
murky crawl space of her familys
home at night to confront her demons
directly. The unease of long ago
reflects the present day distress she
now encounters, and Crawl Space
is a record that acts a bridge between
the past and present. All the while, Tei
Shi spins out her plaintive, sexy vocals
against a background of R&B-spiked
electronic pop.
Crawl Space is vulnerable yet
empowering, and finds its strength in
emotional exposure in a powerfully
genuine way, making it one of the most
daring and refreshing introspective
records of some time.
I feel like Im always living between
two polarities, says the Brooklyn-
based songstress. One is this extreme
confrontation with myself and my own
shortcomings and then, on the other
end of the spectrum, is this extreme
confidence.
