NOTES
traditional worship
The text of the opening hymn is borne out of terrible
persecution in the latter part of the 15th century.
Hymn singing was a great source of strength. The
author was a Lutheran attorney who later became a
Separatist. This particular tune came in the mid 1500s.
Note there are basically three sections to the melody.
The first two are identical. We sing the first phrase
and then repeat it exactly. Both phrases start on a low
note sing through the octave and return to the starting
note. The last third of the melody, starts on the high
note and descends to the starting note. The hymn is
one of encouragement in stressful times of pain (v.3).
Note the hymn stresses Gods character again and
again. Notice the litany of response at the end of each
verse to God all praise and glory. One of the great
truths of worship is that in it we are retuned to Gods
perspective. Our natural bent is to turn towards self,
in joy and in sorrow, in pain and in want. However,
when we enter into the story of what God is doing
in our lives rather than asking God to enter into the
story we are weaving for our lives, we gain an eternal
perspective. After all, eternity lasts a lot longer than
the few years we are on this earth. When you miss
worship with the Body of Christ, you get out of tune! -
