Removing and installing cylinder head cover

Note
Before removing clean extremely dirty cylinder
head covers as well as intermediate
spaces (engines 355, 355 A).

Remove and clean cylinder head cover.
(Engines 355, 355 A: previously loosen hose
clamps (1) and slide rubber sealing ring all the
way up to intake manifold).
Cover intake ducts (engines 314, 352, 362).

Engines 355, 355 A

Check sealing surface on cylinder head and

cylinder head cover, remove any gasket residues.
Replace gasket for cylinder head cover and
sealing rings for mounting bolts.
Position cylinder head cover and tighten
mounting bolts. Observe tightening torques!"

Engine 364

Notes
Engines 314, 352, 352 A, 362 LA:
First tighten bolts above intake ducts and then
bolts in center row.
Engines 355, 355 A:
Slide rubber seal all the way to cylinder head
cover, tighten hose clamps.

Notes
Adjust valve clearance with engine cold (wait at
least 30 minutes after shutting off engine, even if
only operated for short time).

Turn engine in normal direction of rotation with

special tool.

intake valve on cylinder 6.

Adjustment of the valve clearance can be

accomplished using two different methods.

Method 1 - Adjusting each cylinder separately

according to injection sequence.
Turn crankshaft until piston for cylinder to be
adjusted is precisely at top dead center of
compression stroke. The valves must be closed
and the tappet rods must be easy to turn. This
position is reached when the valves for the
cylinder with synchronously running piston
overlap
(see table, page 0560.10 /2).

Method 2 - Adjusting all valves in two crankshaft

positions.
Turn crankshaft until the following crankshaft
position is reached depending on engine model
designation (see table 0560.10 /2):

Engines
314, 352, 352 A, 362 LA, 364, 366, 366 A /LA:
Start of delivery marking ("FB" or notch) on V-
belt pulley or on vibration damper must be
aligned with the setting pointer on timing case
cover.

Engine 355:
The top dead centre (TDC) marking on the
flywheel must be aligned with the setting edge in
the inspection hole.

and in inspection hole (example)

Engines 355 A, 360, 360 A:

The top centre (TDC) marking on the vibration
damper must be aligned with the setting pointer
on the timing case cover.

and setting pointer (example)

Check whether no. 1 cylinder is in ignition TDC

or in overlap TDC (both valves are closed in
ignition TDC). Check and adjust accordingly the
valves listed in the adjustment table.

Setting valve clearance

Measure valve clearance between rocker arm

and valve stem with a feeler gauge (arrow).
Valve clearance is correctly set if the feeler
gauge can be drawn through with slight
resistance.

Note
It is only necessary to correct valve clearance if
it is outside the tolerance range (+0.20 mm or -
0.10 mm).

Slacken locking nut (2) for adjusting.

Set valve clearance by turning the adjusting
screw (1). Screw locking nut tight. Re-check
valve clearance: correct, if necessary.
