0. General

0.1. Introduction
Pegasus has been developed by DNV GL to support recording and assessment of
thickness measurement data. This can be done in two different ways: Either by entering
measurement data into tables (the so called Lite functionality) or by assigning thickness
measurements to an existing 3D model of the ship structure (the so called Full
functionality).
The program is protected by a license file which defines the scope of functionality. In
particular the availability of Lite and Full functionality is determined by the feature
releases of the license files.
The main features of Pegasus are:
Spreadsheet like tables, allowing easy data input and clear presentation of
measurements results.
Comparison of the measurement data against the specific maximum allowable
diminution of the respective structural part.
Dynamic hot spot list showing the most critical areas with respect to degree of
corrosion.
Generation of reports in the format required by IACS1.
XML based data format for exchange, storage and transfer of thickness
measurement data.

For the Lite functionality of Pegasus the measurement recording tables have been
designed to simplify input of data as much as possible. Furthermore their layout is similar
to the tables commonly used for TM reporting according to IACS.

The main features of the Lite functionality are:

The results of the comparison of the measurement data against the specific
maximum allowable diminution are coloured in the tables according to the
degree of corrosion.
The generated reports contain tables, assessment results as well as related
documents, e.g. sketches.
Support for Enhanced Survey Program (ESP) assessment of corroded structures.
Support for Condition Assessment Program (CAP) of corroded structures

The Full functionality of Pegasus offers assignment of readings to the structural parts of
the ship structure by user defined views of the 3D model. Subsequently a TM report
according to IACS1 can be generated automatically.

The main features of Pegasus Full functionality are:

1 IACS, Unified Requirements Z, Survey and Certification

Creation of printouts based on the 3D model to be used for the real
measurement process.
Provision of approved scantlings for the structural parts by the 3D model.
3D views of the structure and measurements with a linked tabular measurement
data representation. Changes in the graphical view are reflected in the list and
vice-versa.
The results of the comparison of the measurement data against the specific
maximum allowable diminution are coloured in the graphical view according to
the degree of corrosion.
The generated reports contain the IACS required tables with automatically
created sketches of the measured structure and assessment results.
Data Interfaces to POSEIDON to generate the geometry and the plates/profiles
from the POSEIDON model and to transfer the measurement values to
POSEIDON, if required.

0.2. What is new in Version 2.1?

14 / 102
Figure 6: General Options

0.5.9.2. TM-Table Creation Options

Some TM-tables can be preconfigured according to the size of the ship. For instance the
number of rows is known when the steel drawing of the ship is available (strake length in
the TM-1). The same holds true for cross sectional tables TM-2(i) and TM-2(ii), see
Figure 7.

Figure 7: Table options

For tables of type TM-1, the default number of plates in strake fore and aft from
amidships can be defined, see Figure 8. If the numbers to fore and aft end are different,
the maximum should be chosen. For example, setting this value to 5 will result in 11
rows, 5 forward, 1 mid ship, and 5 aft.

Figure 8: predefined number of plates in strake (for TM-1)

For tables of type TM-2(i), the default number of strakes between stringer and centre can
be specified, see Figure 9.
For example, setting this parameter to 3 results in 5 rows for the TM-2(i): 1 stringer
plate strake, 3 strength deck strakes, and 1 sheer strake.

Figure 9: predefined number of strakes TM-2(i) options

For tables of type TM-2(ii), the default number of shell strakes can be specified, see
Figure 10. While sheer strake and keel strake is fixed, the number of strake for side shell,
bilge and bottom can be given.
For example, 2 side shell strakes, 2 bilge strakes and 2 bottom platting strakes, result in
7 (keel strake taken into account) rows in the TM-2(ii) form.

16 / 102
Figure 10: TM-2(ii) options
The behaviour of the table editing can be changed using the last two options.
Movement of the cursor on pressing the enter key can be switched by the last option.
The cursor can move top to bottom or left to right on pressing enter. When left to right
movement is chosen, the cursor moves into the next line when leaving the last editable
cell in a line.

Once a date is set it can be changed using the arrow keys on the calendar. For this select
the date field by left-clicking and navigate to the according entry for year, month or day
with the left and right arrow keys.

Rule Set input:

If the Pegasus Lite project was not provided by DNV GL the applied rule set can be
changed by clicking the Change button left beside the name of the current applied rule
set. This will open a window listing all possible structural members that can be used for
table based measurement recording. Clicking the Change button of this window will open
a window allowing the selection of the rule set to apply (see Figure 16).

Figure 16: Change of Rule Set

Editing Structural Member Types:

Pegasus Lite functionality comes with a predefined list of structural member types and
referring rules for the computation of the maximum diminutions. These predefined
structural member types can be extended by subtypes enabling the definition of different
corrosion margin rules for structural parts of the same structural member type but
located at different areas.

22 / 102
Figure 17: List of predefined structural member types

Using the insert and remove line buttons of the local toolbar (see Figure 17: List of
predefined structural member types) allow creation and deletion of structural member
subtypes. The name of a subtype can be chosen arbitrarily, the diminution formula can
be defined by the following syntax:

GL Compute maximum allowed diminution acc. to legacy GL formula

(default)

<xx> mm Maximum allowed diminution is defined by an absolute value, e.g.

1.5mm

<xx>% Maximum allowed diminution is defined by percentage of the

original thickness, e.g. 20%

<xx>%+-<yy>mm Maximum allowed diminution defined as combination of absolute

and percentage value, e.g. 20% + 1mm

Note: This feature is only available for DNV GL users having a special license file.

2.2. Compartments
For some kind of measurement campaigns, e.g. CAP and ESP, its necessary to provide a
statistics based on compartments - hence there is a need to assign readings to
compartments.
In case of table based recording using Lite functionality this requires a manual
assignment of readings to the related compartment(s) in the different measurement
tables TM-xx.

2.2.1. Compartment Definition

Creating a new project for table based recording using Lite functionality there wont be
any compartment definition unless the project is provided by DNV GL in the case of a
measurement campaign according to TM-7S31. Every compartment in scope of
measurements has to be created. That can be done via the compartment menu or via the
local toolbar button of the TM-Tables (see Figure 18). Using the local toolbar button
opens a dialog; see Figure 19, where the name must be specified. The type (or purpose)
of the compartment has to be chosen from a predefined list.

Figure 18: Compartment creation via local TM-Tables toolbar

Figure 19: Compartment creation dialogue

All compartment definitions are contained in a table accessible via the Compartments
menu provided by the General Data panel, see Figure 20. Previously defined
compartments can be edited or deleted while new compartments can be created directly
in the table.

24 / 102
Figure 20: Compartments table

Name Compartment name

Purpose Compartment type to be chosen from a predefined list.
Side Portside, starboard side or centered

2.2.2. Compartment Assignment with Lite Functionality

In order to assign a compartment to a reading with Lite functionality the compartment
columns must be enabled (show/hide compartment column toggle), see Figure 21.

Figure 21: Compartment results, additional compartment columns

Left-clicking a compartment cell and selecting a defined compartment from the drop-
down list assigns the reading to a compartment. In order to assign the same
compartment to several readings, simply select all cells or the whole column. Then use
the set data function to assign a value simultaneously. The principles of compartment
assignment will be defined by the attending surveyor.

2.3. Campaign Details

General information about the measurement campaign is recorded in this form. Most
input fields can be edited if necessary at any time, see Figure 22. Specific information
about the input fields is provided below

3. TM-Tables
According to the IACS3 thickness measurements have to be reported in specific forms. In
case of Lite functionality the software supports the IACS reporting forms TM-1, TM-2,
TM-3, TM-4, TM-5, and TM-6. For bulk carriers additional forms TM-7 and TM-7S312 are
supported. Forms TM-1 to TM-7 can be generated by the user. Due to precalculations
needed to set up the TM-7S31, this form will be provided by DNV GL to the ship owner
for every single ship prior to the measurements.
(In case of Full functionality the IACS tables TM-1, TM-2, TM-3, TM-4, TM-5, TM-6 and
TM-7 will be created automatically from the readings assigned to the 3D model -
nevertheless the TM-tables can also be created manually e.g. for parts of the structure
which does not exist in the 3D model.)

Every reading is located on a structural part (plate/stiffener) belonging to a structural

member (main deck, shell, etc. ). For each plate or stiffener the maximum allowable
diminution is determined from the respective structural member and the original
thickness.

Note: In case of local corrosion the corrosion margin is set to 20% of the original
thickness as default. Depending on the type of corrosion, this local corrosion
margin can be overwritten as defined by the attending surveyor.

The necessary steps to establish the assignment for different table types are explained in
detail in the following sections.

Note: All values have to be entered with decimal delimiter according to country specific
local, i.e.. 10,5 in German and 10.5 in English.

All values have to be entered in [mm].

The original thickness has to be entered in accordance to the thicknesses

approved by DNV GL for the vessel to be measured.

Measurement assessment
For some measured values a rating symbol in the Diminution column A is shown. This
symbol is used to indicate a specific degree of corrosion or a warning that is related to
this measurement, for example a measured value that exceeds the original thickness or a
case where the maximum diminution cant be determined correctly, see Table 1.

Substantial corrosion
Substantial Corrosion is an extent of corrosion such that assessment of corrosion pattern indicates a
wastage in excess of 75% of the maximum allowable diminution, but within acceptable limits.
Structural part has to be replaced
In case of corrosion which exceeds the maximum allowable diminution the corresponding structural
part has to be renewed.
Measured value exceeds original thickness

maximum diminution cant be determined from structural member

3.1. Table Creation
Selecting TM-Tables from the project panel will open the menu for recording the
thickness measurements based on tables. The IACS3 compliant reporting tables can be
generated by the local toolbar of the Tables panel, see Figure 23. The different types TM-
1 to TM-7 are available according to the ship type.

Note: TM-7 is not available for tankers.

Figure 23: Table creation via toolbar

A new created table opens immediately. Existing tables are listed in the table tree of the
measurement Table panel. They can be opened by a single or double left-click.

Note: For each table type, the tooltip specifies which structural members are supported

3.3. Table Types

3.3.1.1. TM-1 Deck, Bottom and Side Shell Plating

TM-1 tables, see Figure 28, shall be used for recording of thickness measurements of:

All strength deck plating within cargo length area.

Keel, bottom shell plating and bilge plating within the cargo length area.
Side shell plating that is all wind and water strakes within the cargo length area.
Side shell plating that is selected wind and water strakes outside the cargo length
area.
The strake position shall be indicated as follows:

32 / 102
For strength deck indicate the number of the strake of plating inboard from the
stringer plate.
For bottom plating indicate the number of the strake of plating outboard from the
keel plate.
For side shell plating give number of the strake of plating sheerstrake and letter
as shown on shell expansion.

For oil tankers all deck plating strakes are to be recorded, for ore/oil and bulk carriers
only the deck plating strakes outside line of openings are to be recorded.

Measurements are to be taken at the forward and aft areas of all plates and the single
measurements recorded are to represent the average of multiple measurements.

For Oil tankers additional measurements have to be taken where plates cross
ballast/cargo tank boundaries, here separate measurements for the area of plating in
way of each type of tank are to be recorded.

3.3.1.9. TM-7S31 Cargo Hold Side Shell Frames

Pre-calculations are needed to set up the TM-7S31, furthermore the scope of the
measurements is specified by DNV GL. Hence prefilled tables of this type will only be
provided by DNV GL to the ship owner for every single ship prior to the measurements.
These tables must be used to guarantee a complete and consistent assessment.
TM-7S31 tables, see Figure 36, shall be used for recording of thickness measurements of
cargo hold transverse frames of bulk carriers under IACS UR S31.

3.4. Data Import

In most cases measurement data are entered into the tables only after the measurement
campaign has finished. In order to support recording of data by several persons, the
software allows file merging in case of Lite functionality. To merge two or more files it is
mandatory that all files have the same Main Particular data. At least IMO number, ship
name and applied rule set and the internal measurement campaign id must be identical.
The following procedure is highly recommended for a smooth data import:
1. Create a basic project file including all ship specific general data (to be
defined in the Main Particular and Compartments sub-items of the
General Data panel).
2. Create a copy of this file for all involved persons.
3. After finishing data collection, gather all files at a single place and import
them back to the basic file, one-by-one.
The import comprises transfer of all tables, attachments corresponding to tables and
compartment definitions.

54 / 102
To run the file import, select Import in the File menu, see Figure 37. A file dialog will
open allowing selecting the file to be imported.

Figure 37: Data import

Note: The merging of files is only supported for pure table based measurements (Lite
functionality)
4. TM-3D-Model
Performing 3D based measurement recording, i.e. using Pegasus Full functionality,
requires a model of the ship structure given in HCM format. This HCM format describes
the structural model in terms of plates and stiffeners with 3D shapes, properties and
affiliation to structural members and compartments4.

Figure 38: Principal 3D Model setup as defined by the HCM standard

Note: The assignment of structural parts to compartments and structural members is

model inherent and is not part of Pegasus. Hence Pegasus will represent
compartments and structural members as they were defined by the model setup.

Assigning readings to this 3D model requires a graphical view displaying the structural
parts where thickness measurement shall be carried out. Within this view readings are
created by mouse click on the shown structural parts storing information about the
location of reading (3D coordinates) and the referring structural part with approved
thickness and maximum allowed diminution. Views can be arbitrarily created and stored
with Pegasus to allow specific measurement recording.

Note: A view is just a utility allowing recording of readings independent from any
assessment or reporting requirements. I.e. a view can be deleted without any
impact on recorded readings, their assessment or report generation.

4.1. View Creation

Selecting 3D Views (see above) from the project panel will open the menu for recording
the thickness measurements based on a 3D model. Views can be created by the local
view toolbar providing four methods for convenient view creation with minimum data
input: Cross section view, strake view, compartment view and an overall view. Each view
can be modified after creation using the 3D Part Filter, explained in section 4.2.1.1 to
adapt the view to the necessary requirements, e.g. adapt a view to have a closer look
into structural details.

Figure 40: 3D View creation via toolbar

4.1.1. Cross Section View Creation

A cross section view showing the ship structure within a dedicated frame range or at an
exact frame position and can be created by the cross section view wizard in figure below.

Figure 41: Cross section view creation via toolbar

The frame position resp. the frame range can be defined by the menu below.

Figure 42: Cross section view creation

Xmin Frame number defining the foremost x coordinate of the cross section. If checkbox not ticked, frame
number is set to the minimum frame number of the model.

Xmax Frame number defining the aftermost x coordinate of the cross section. If checkbox not ticked,
frame number is set to the maximum frame number of the model.

Note: Intermediate frame positions can be entered by <FrameNo> +/- <dx>, e.g. 72
+200 defining the position at 200mm in front of frame 72. If Xmin and Xmin are
set to the same frame number an exact cross section view (with zero x
extension) will be created.

4.1.2. Strake View Creation

A strake based view showing a longitudinal extended structural member can be created
by the strake view wizard in figure below.

4.2.1.1. 3D Part Filter

The 3D Part Filter allows the selection of structural parts to be shown in a view by the
following filtering criteria

spatial extension in x, y and z direction (Bounding Box)

compartment affiliation (Compartments)
structural member affiliation (Structural Member)

A structural part will be shown in a view, if it is

1. located within the selected bounding box

2. part of the selected compartment(s)
3. part of the selected structural member(s)

If no filter is active, all structural parts will be shown (see figure Figure 50)

Note: Remember to select at least one Structural Member filter to create a view with
visible parts. The Compartments filter does not influence the visibility of the
structural members.

Note: The Bounding Box, Compartments and Structural Member filter lists are
interconnected. I.e. an activated bounding box filter restrains the compartment
and structural member filter list to those compartments and structural members
having structural parts lying in the active bounding box. An activated
compartment filter restrains the structural member filter list furthermore to
those structural members having structural parts belonging to the active
compartment(s).

Readings are created with an undefined measured thickness value, indicated with a white
coloured icon and value UNDEF in the referring cell in the view list. After a reading is
created, the focus will be changed from the graphic to this cell to facilitate measurement
value entering. If a thickness value is entered for the reading, the icon will be coloured
according to the following scheme:

Readings can be deleted either by selecting the referring row in the view list and pressing
the DEL key or by activating the reading deletion mode in the 3D toolbar (see section
4.2.1.2.) and selecting the reading to be deleted in the graphic.

Readings can be moved within the referring structural part by activating the reading
movement mode in the 3D toolbar (see section 4.2.1.2.), selecting the reading in the
graphic and move it by drag and drop to the new position. If the <CTRL> key is pressed
during this operation, the reading can also be moved to any other structural part in the
graphic.

5.3. Hotspots TM-7S31

The hotspot list for the TM7S31 tables comprises side shell frames in single side skin bulk
carriers which have to be renewed or recoated according to the IACS Unified
Requirements S31 and GL-corrosion criteria, see Figure 60. Ratings for side shell frames
to be renewed are generated according to both the IACS UR S31 requirements as well as
the GL-corrosion criteria whichever criterion is stricter. This hotspot list is only available
for readings recorded in tables of type TM7-S31 using Lite functionality.
The hotspots list can be sorted in ascending or descending order by each column by
double clicking on the column header. Sorting by column Frame No yields the default
plate grouped ordering.

5.4. ESP Assessment
For ships carrying the class notation ESP (Enhanced Survey Program) a survey scope in
accordance to IMO-Resolution A.744(18) as amended is required. Notation ESP will be
assigned to oil tankers, chemical tankers, bulk carriers and combination carriers in
accordance to IACS UR Z11.
ESP requires among other things the determination of maximum and average thickness
diminution for defined locations and areas. Pegasus Lite functionality helps to evaluate
these statistical values from the recorded thickness measurements stored in the
thickness measurement tables. The ESP assessment is accessible as icon of the Result
panel and creates a window with input and output tab.

defined by the ESP assignment table shown in Table 2. For each of these ESP locations
the TM tables to be considered can be selected by a check box. Selecting TM tables for
different frames for the Transverse Section area will result in maximum and average
thickness diminution output for each frame.
Figure 62: Assignment of TM tables to special ESP locations

The assignment table can be sorted with respect to a column by double clicking on the
column header. For instance all TM tables referring to a special frame can be easily
accessed by sorting the assignment table according to the frame number. Additionally
the assignment table can be filtered according to the ESP locations currently worked on.

5.4.2. ESP Location Result

For each ESP location as defined in Table 2 the maximum and average diminution in
terms of percentage to the original thicknesses (ESP values) are shown in the output
tab of the ESP assessment. The ESP results are grouped according to the defined

compartments, the transverse sections for each frame and the automatically created ESP
locations Keel Plate, Bottom Shell Plating, Bilge Plating, Side Shell Plating, Sheerstrake,
Strength Deck Plating, Stringer Plating. For each compartment the referring ESP values
of transverse webs (and adjacent structural members), shell frames and transverse
bulkheads are listed (see Figure 63 ).

5.5. Statistics
The scope of the measurement campaign as well as a distribution of readings according
their degree of corrosion is provided by the icon Statistics of the Results panel.

Figure 64: Project statistic

The distribution of all tables included in the project file according their types is shown on
the right hand side. Detailed information about the readings are summarized on the top
left hand side, see Figure 64. They are grouped according their degree of corrosion
(normal, substantial, renewal required) and suspect groups like Unknown (no maximum
allowable diminution available) and Negative (measured value exceeds original
thickness). Some general information like number of compartments and number of
available structural members and a file identification number (check sum) is shown as
well.

86 / 102
5.6. CAP Assessment
CAP assessment requires among other things a statistical assessment of the corrosion
condition of compartments. Pegasus Lite functionality helps to evaluate these statistical
values from the readings recorded in the thickness measurement tables. A prerequisite
for this assessment is that the readings are assigned to the related compartments (i.e. if
a reading is located on a structural part shared by two compartments it has to be
assigned to both compartments, otherwise to only to one compartment).

Note: This feature is only available for DNV GL users having a special license file.

5.6.1. CAP Results

A list of all compartments is shown displaying the share of readings of in the

compartments having different levels of degradation (see Figure 65: CAP Assessment).
The degradation within a compartment is further itemized into the main structural
elements Deck, Side, Bottom, Inner bottom, Inner Deck, Long. Bulkhead, Trans.
Bulkhead, Internal Structure and Hatches&Coamings derived from the referring structural
members of the readings (see Table 3: Mapping Structural Member Types to CAP Sub
Structures)

Figure 65: CAP Assessment

6. Report Generation

TM reports can be generated by the Create Report icon of the Results panel (see
Figure 67).

Figure 67: Report Creation

Selecting this menu opens a dialogue (see Figure 68) where the filename and path of the
report can be specified. Save creates a report in RTF (Rich Text Format). By default the
report contains all tables and corresponding figures existing in the project. The sequence
of the TM tables in the report is the same as under node TM Tables in the project tree.

Figure 68: "Save as" dialog for reports

92 / 102
In order to change the scope of the final report or to exclude all figures the save as
dialog provides the Options command to generate a user defined report. Figure 69
shows a sample scope selection dialog. It allows specifying which measurement tables
are to be included in the report. Specific tables can be excluded by unchecking the
according entries in the table. If figures shall not be included in the report uncheck the
include figures option

Figure 69: Report options

.
If a standard RTF (Rich Text Format) viewer is installed on the system, e.g. MS Word, the
report is automatically opened after the generation process for viewing, printing, and
further processing.

Note: Page numbers are not updated automatically. When using MS Word select the
whole document content by CTRL+A and update all field values F9 in order to
establish the correct page numbering.

Note: Report generation will be denied for vessels with ESP class notation or subjected
to the Condition Assessment Program (CAP) if not all readings are assigned to
a compartment.
6.1. Report Configuration

Performing 3D model based measurement recording, i.e. using Pegasus Full

functionality, requires some configuration input to ensure a reasonable IACS conform
thickness measurement reporting (see below).

Figure 70: Report configuration in case Pegasus Full functionality

The following configuration input is needed:

Preselected Frames for Frame numbers where TM-2(i) and TM-2(ii) should be created. Frame numbers
TM-2 has to be separated by ;. E.g. if Preselected Frames for TM-2 is set to
125;145 TM-2 will be created at frame 125 and frame 145 (if readings on
relevant structural members at these frames existing)

Minimum # of MP for Minimum number of readings contained in referring TM table

TM1TM7

Min. Long. Ext. Tolerance Distance of minimum and maximum x-coordinate of a structural part defining if
it is classified as transversal or longitudinal structural part. E.g. a plate
extended from frame 100 to frame 100+500mm will be classified as
transversal structural part if Min. Long. Ext. is set to 600mm and will be
classified as longitudinal structural part if Min. Long. Ext. is set to 400mm.

Frame Selection Spacing around frame to assign readings to it. E.g. if Frame Selection
Tolerance Tolerance is set to 300mm and a reading to be reported in TM-3 is located at
frame 112 +200mm will appear in TM-3 table at frame 112.

Bulkhead Clustering Spacing around a transversal bulkhead to assign readings to it. Especially
Tolerance important for corrugated bulkheads where readings are not located on an exact
frame position in general.
