Course Overview:
Welcome to Astronomy! Since you (hopefully) chose this course as a science elective, you can expect that learning
activities and assessments will reflect more flexibility and creativity than in a science core class such as biology,
chemistry, or physics. Many assignments will incorporate your choices and at times you will be given more freedom in
how you choose to spend your class time in order to accomplish our learning goals.

This course will emphasize research and hands on projects, both short and longer term, over tests (although we will
occasionally have quizzes). In addition to learning course content, I hope to help you develop non-academic skills that
can be applied outside of this class, such as in higher education and the workplace. Some of these skills include:
digital safety/citizenship professionally giving/receiving feedback
presentation skills web design
literacy (reading and writing) process documentation and data analysis
We have one-to-one computer access in this course, therefore we will document our learning - both the process and
content - through blogging. In order to prepare you for safe and responsible participation in an online learning
community, you will first be required to complete a Digital Citizenship and Expectations mini-course.

Supplies:
inch binder or folder Tissues/Sanitizer
Pencil/Eraser $10 Lab fee
Grading:
Assignments will be categorized and weighted as follows:
Projects and Labs 35 % Blog Posts 25 %
Quizzes 20 % Articles 20 %
Policies and Procedures:
Please see the SBISD handbook for policies on missing assignments and make-up work due to absences.
For absences: 1 day missed = 1 day to get caught up, 2 days missed = 2 days to get caught up, etc.
Assignments not turned in on their due date will be graded as a zero until turned in, at which time they may be
subject to grade penalties.

Academic Dishonesty:
You are expected to complete each assignment within the parameters set forth by your teacher, specifically, with
regard to the extent of collaboration and what resources you are allowed to use on each assignment. Academic
dishonesty will not be tolerated and will result in an office referral as well as a zero on an assignment that at the
discretion of your teacher may or may not be allowed to be redone.
