INTRODUCTION
In India near half a billion people live in rapidly urbanizing cities. Urbani
development and construction, that converts open space into heat trapping su
More than 60% of roof surface of urban India is constructed from galvoniz
Collectively these hot surfaces can increase heat island effect can worsen air p
to significantly impact internal temperatures and provide thermal comfort in
Furthermore with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 40 c, in the majo
section of population in low income housing with little to no access to electric
matter of survival, not just comfort.
Hypothesis Drawn:
A coolness indicator that compares the surface temperature of a
roof on a sunny summer afternoon to those of a clean black roof
(SRI=0) and a clean white roof (SRI=100). SRI is computed
from solar reflectance and thermal emittance. Cool hot surface
low as well as high value.
Thermal resistance: A measure of a material ability to prevent
heat from flowing through it. The Thermal Resistance of a roof
can be improved by adding insulation or radiant barrier or both.
Cool surfaces are measured by how much they reflect (Solar
Reflectance or SR) and how efficiently they radiate heat
(Thermal Emittance or TE) Solar reflectance is most important.
White roofs reflect more sunlight than dark roofs.
SR= Fraction of a sunlight reflected from a surface.
Solar Absorbptance: Fraction of sunlight that is absorbed by a
surface.
Thermal Emittance: Efficiency which a surface emits thermal
radiation
Brief History:
Covering roofs with gunny bags and wetting it with water.
Using branches of coconut trees to cover the roof and avoid
Roof heating.
In olden days the roofs of the houses
were coated with limestone which had high solar reflectance
which kept the space
In northern states it was common to
create stack effect by opening windows
in the basement and top floor which
circulated air.
Ceiling as high as 10,11 and 12 feet were common in the olden
days to keep room cool and comfortable.
Using sloping roofs and tiles.
Information about the Topic (Maths-
Formulae, Units, Equations, Graphs,
Calculations, Related History):

1. Cool roofs reduce air conditioning costs peak power demand.

2.in places with limited power supply, a substantial reduction in
energy usage is observed.

Cool roofs using earthen pots technique

Procedure:-step 1:-waterproofing treatment of roof surface.

Method:-Apply first coat of cement based waterproofing
chemical.
Lay fiberglass mesh fabric sheet. Over First coat of
waterproofing.

Apply second coat of cement based waterproofing over the

fiberglass sheet.
Apply third coat of cement based waterproofing chemical
over the second coat.
Allow the cement mortar layer dry for one day.

Step 2:-Application of inverted Earthen pots option.

Method:-say cement slurry over waterproofing layer and

lay inverted Earthen pots over the cement slurry.
Lay 25mm thick layer of cement alone the pots.
Allow cement mortals to dry for 1 day.
Lay 50 mm thick IPS over the cement mortar layer and
finish the surface using aluminum screed.
Lay 25 mm thick cement bed over the IPS.
Lay cement slurry over cement mortar.
Lay broken ceramic tiles over the slurry.

Lay white cement slurry over the tiles to fill the joints.
In our model:
Earthen pots trap air in the cavities and acts as a insulator
and increases the thermal resistance of the roof and
decreases solar absorptance.
Ceramic tiles: UV resistant and increases solar reflectance.
White cement helps in reflecting away sunlight and
increases solar reflectance.

Economic Aspect:
Epoxy based waterproofing with Fiber glass reinforcement
=33 RS/ sq ft
Plain cement concrete(1:2:4) 50 mm thick=99RS/sq ft
Bedding mortar cement: Sand ( 1:4) 25 mm thick = 88RS/

Earthen pots = 5Rs per piece
Ceramic tiles=RS 25/ sq ft
Total (material +labour)cost/sqft=Rs.160.

Concern to the Community:

Cool roofs is an innovative effort to reduce cooling costs, energy
usage and green house emissions by using earthen pots as
insulator, applying reflective ,white coating to roof tops and is
one of the quickest and low cost way for reducing our global
carbon emissions. These measures will provide a solution to urban
cities for mitigating green house emissions through converted cool
roofs.
Cool roofs increase the life of roof equipment and material.

Feasibility of Model:
The materials mentioned in our model are easily available and
cost effective. The procedure does not require very skilfull
workers and can be done by the regular building workers. Thus it
is very feasible and effective procedure.
Conclusion:
Roofs and pavements cover about 60% of urban surfaces, and
absorb more than 80% of the sunlight that contacts them. This
energy is converted to heat results in hotter more polluted cities
and higher energy costs .cool roofs have the ability to reflect and
reject heat because this are prepared with material .
