Abstract: Because of its limited aspect of the uniform unit, it is the fact that the apartment, which has contributed
greatly to the residential culture in the 21st century, hardly satisfies the variety of residents culture and desire. In
addition to having a huge influence on peoples main life, the rapid change of the society and a wide variety of
culture require that residents need various aspects. With the passage of time, the desire of residents and a change of
family members require a variety of the way of using the space and organizing the space, because of this, it reaches
the point when a suggestion of a new domestic space must be made. Although the space function was satisfying,
with a rapid change of the society and the characters of residents, a flexible function and organizing the space is
needed. At this point, this study has its object to suggest the application solution of feasible furniture and the system
requisites with the change of the life of residents and the way of use. The contents of this study grasps the point of
general study of domestic space for residents themselves the study of user centered design conception -the change
of the family lifes circle and character, with the study through design process and the passage of time. Afterwards,
by analyzing the furniture and system of a constituent element, with this, we tried to understand requirement of the
space organization and function, and deduce its requisites of the system and furniture, and suggest them. The
conclusion of this study is that, firstly, with the passage of time, the change of the family members has a huge
influence on the organization and function of the apace, with increasing of the member of the family, the space for the
common use is on the rise. Secondly, with the change of life from the couple-centered to the child-centered, the
various function of the dining room is required and the function of the living room is reduced. Thirdly, with the
suggestion of the way for this change of the space, we suggested the system furniture and the wall with fixtures and
so on. Hereafter, for this, the proper understanding of the furniture system, and the suggestion of the properly
adoptable system fulfilling the needs for various family types and space, and the study about a new applicable
interpretation of the interior will be needed.

1. Introduction
1.1 The Background And Purpose Of The Study
Set in the 21st century, the growth of the apartment has contributed greatly to the developments of residential
culture. However, because of its limited aspect of the uniform unit, it is the fact that the apartment that contributed
greatly to the residential culture in the 21st century satisfies the variety of residents culture and desire, because of
the change of the main life and a variety of residents demand.
It reached the point when the suggestion of a new domestic space must be made.
Although the function of the space was satisfying at the time of designing, the rapid change of the society made
them require the easily applicable function for the residents culture and life.
One of the residents requirements, the circle of the family life which changes with the change of the family
members the aspect of the use, the way of the use, and the desire for the space. It is difficult that reconstructing
actions, for the purpose of fulfilling this desire, meets sufficiently their demands for the residential aspect, because
of a constructional limit.
Also, although the study about the plan for the changeable residence is in progress, this focuses on the variety of
residents, so the study about the variety of the change, receiving the concept of the time, is not enough.
To solve these problems, it is important to observe the change of residents features.
This will be the great support in respect of observing the change of the space with the passage of time. Also,
knowing the requirement of the residents following with this, prepare the proper element, which can help the
change of the residence space according to the change of the life pattern.
At this point, this study look into the demand for the space with the change of life and the way of use during the
residence, and then deduce and suggest variable element and system family element and so on.
1.2 The Range And Method Of The Study
The range of this study is, for seeing the present states of reconstruction and architectural solution, according to
the change of the family types, setting up a period from the time when the family formats until their children
begin to attend school, to observe the changing degree and the space requirement of the residents following with
the passage of time. Following this, we tried to suggest the variable system element.
The satisfaction degree can be seen in the state of residents moving, and the foreign experiential studies has
lightened that moving has a close relationship with the cycle of the family life. The enhancement of the physical
housing environment is seen as the most common reason for moving, followed by the enhancement of the
neighborhood environment. 1
That is to say, the reason for the educational environment for children and the needs for the larger space is pointed
out most frequently. It can be interpreted into the fact that, during the residence life about for 10 years procedure
that the family forms and have children, and after this, the children grow up, the change of the space can be
desperately needed. With this, this study try to suggest the flexible plan for the apartment unit plane with the cycle
of the family life about for 10 years period- the family is formed and until the children attend the school- by
comparing between the change degree of the family type and the residents requirement for the space. The
variable and system element was considered with the plan.

2. Theoretical Study
2.1 Study About The Family Life Cycle And The Residence Space
The cycle of the family life is the concept showing the change of the family following the passage of time,
especially focused on the demands for space and environment. The phases of the cycle of the family can have the

1
Yoon, Bok-ja & Baek, Gum-hwa : Motives for Moving and Residential Satisfaction after Moving , The Graduate School Yeon-Sei
University, 1991
growth, development and decline procedures of the family life, and be divided with the steps of the family type-
the phase of the family formation presenting implicitly the change of the family around the center of the age of the
eldest , the birth of child, bring-up children, the coming-of-age of the children, the marriage, the old age. It also is
2
used as a measuring rule of the familys residence demand and the standard of welfare of the residence.
By considering the family life from the beginning of the family formation from the long-term point of view, The
meaning of the cycle of the family life is to predict the task to be done in each development stage, the residents
demand and the problems, so, provide the information to practice the flexible space plan.
The cycle of the family life indicating the change of time through the family life-getting married, giving a birth,
their childrens growing up, and then setting up for themselves, spending their own old age life and so on- mainly
depends on the type of the family, the function of the family, a role to be done and the interaction between the
family members.3
If we look upon the preceded study that the adaptation way with controlling the residence space by the cycle of
the family life,
Hong Young Uk (1994)4 : It is exclaimed that the member and the constituent of the family change, following with
the cycle of the family life. It is suggested that hence it has an influence on the desire for the size of the house and
the organization of the inner space, the aspect of the use of the space become different with the cycle of the family
life, the desire for the family space change, following with the change of the family life.
Kim Mi He (1991)5 : The cycle of the family life changes along with the growth of the family, following with this,
the main design of the family become different. It is said that because the using way of the space or the value
judgment of the residence change, the cycle of the family life has been studied as a important user feature in the
plan for the apartment design.
Unlike these published study, it is extremely insufficient that the reconstruction of the residence space in the
apartment have a direct connection with the change of the residents such as giving birth and childrens growth,
and it is the real fact that the illegal reconstruction in the architectural construct.
2.2 The Study About The Variable Structure And The Using Way Of The Space
Variability accomplish its conversion with variable method of the upper structure which can make its part- the
space number, location, size and function-variable and means that it is the feature of being variable, following
with the requirement of free residence with the same flatness, and although the adaptable, reasonable building is
not estimated as a good designed one, variability can be the reason that the building can last long. So far, it has
been divided or expanded the residence space by the brick. But it was rather only one trend adapting instinctive
desire by their needs than the plan considering the variability.
The variable residence appeared by the desire of the residents about these change of the space is the way of
substituting the flexibility of the space to adapt the various life pattern of the residents. The study of the variable
residence must be continued because of the life change of the residents, like the change of the number of the
family, or the change of the number of the space and the way of use following with the childrens growth.
The variability in the residence space is approached through the fixed variable element and the variable element,

time, space use division. 6
The fixed variable element includes wall, pillars and ceiling, and the variable element includes the rest of them.
The time use-division is to change the equipment, following with time, and the space use-division is to set up the
equipment with each different location by action. The time use division and the space-use division mean each the
positiveness of the time-use and the positiveness of the space-use.
The ultimate purpose of the variable residence is to plan the plane which is suitable for the desire of the each
resident, but in the unit-plane of the apartment, because it is impossible to accept a great deal of the residents
desire. Therefore, there are the ways of selecting in advance, the established type being shown, by making them
participate in the designing procedure and the way of residence for themselves changing and adjusting the
blueprint.
The former is an example of the way of finishing living in system and the half-ordering system, and the latter is an
example of using the mobile block.
Whenever the member of the family increase and decrease, in case of having an extra room, it is extremely
unreasonable to live there, as it were, or reconstruct the house.
In need of this, the design about, so called, the variable house has been continuously tried, and as it has the
mobile wall like a partition wall, it is the type of the house that residents can relocate the room frequently.
The variable way that is now suggested most commonly to satisfy the various desires of the residents in the
mass-residence area like apartments, have to be the adaptable and reasonably flexible way following with the
residents desire in the same plane.
The variable element in the residence space can be divided with the fixed element such as walls, pillars, ceilings
and the rest of them and the adaptable variable element, supporting the several types without reconstructing, and
7
the flexible variable element, easily changing for supporting the several types.
In regard of the variability, there are the ways to satisfy the residents desire including the way with the residents
participating during the design procedure, the way providing the variability in the residence space, and the way
analyzing and adapting the type of the main life.
This variability shows the systemic feature about assembling and using. The variability is to realize the maximum
adaptation about the size of the generation or the change of the desire by changing the space constituent with the
element of the system itself (internal partitions, walls).8
If we look into the example of adapting the variability, firstly, there is the concept of Steven Halls Hinged space.
This theory is the way that each unit itself becomes a wall or a door, like the mobile wall or a hiding door in the
drawer or a cabinet door.
This space transformation can change freely, according to the users type and feelings, and be used by having a
measurement of time.
The hinged space is the way which can be expanded and reduced by the need for the space, and exchanged the
function of the space and change the space division by the change of the family members, according to the change

of time in a day, the change of the season, and the change of the life cycle.
Next, there is another variable method using the partition wall. This is the way that can control the size and
function of the rooms by screening each room with the partition. There is a modulated partition that we can find,
and this is the easily variable way for moving, as it has been already set up with modulating size on the place
where hinges or rails will be installed, Also, another variable way, us ing the collecting wall, can play a role of a
partition which divide and screen the space and divide the area and collect. It can be applied as multi-function.

3. The Analysis Of The Use Way Of The Space

This study tried to analyze the use way of the space through the published study and the case analysis. The
analysis of the space use way, from the User, Space, Furnitures point of view, that is to say, is the behavior
analysis according to the feature of the residents, is analyzed with the space use way according to the function of
the space, and the variable element with furniture or the system element.
3.1 User Analysis: The Behavior Analysis According To The Characteristic Of The Residents
It is necessary to study the way that improve convenience reflecting the characteristic of the various family type,
the indoor space have a huge difference between the family members.
The member of the family changes with the passage of time, so the desire for the constituent element of the indoor
space also changes. In the cycle of the family life, especially from the newly- married family to the family with
elementary school children, they seem to prefer the small-sized apartment around 20~30 s.m.

time
As stated as aforesaid, If we look into the feature which appears the family life cycle about 10years after the
formation of the family, namely, in the newly married period because the space is for only two, the space required
the privacy is not needed, and, if anything, they need the space for themselves together.
The space for the common use and the personal use does not need to be divided in this period. Because of the
self-development period, the space, except the main area, is required to be applied such as for hobby, library and
the office etc.
It is seen that, in the life cycle from giving birth to school children, the bigger space is needed by giving birth and
until children is under 5, they live with their parents in the same room. After this, the rooms for each person are
needed.
The expansion of the room for their playing space is also required in the period of under the school age. After
children reach the school age, the expansion of the house is desperately required and the numbers of the bedrooms
increase. The collecting equipment for children is greatly needed. In this period, the expansion of the common
space is required through the division between the couples space and the childrens space and the expansion of

3.2 Space Analysis : The analysis of the use way of the space according to the space function
To look into the way that the apartment residents have, we looked into where a gathering among the family
members, conversation, entertainment, reception for the guests, the personal life and the housework is being done.
An Ju Young (2001)11 :It is said about the aspect of the space use that the entertainment and most of the activities
is mainly done around the dining room, the remaining time with children in the living room is much longer than
the newly married period.
Reception for the guests among the using way of the space is mainly in process in the dining room, unlike
reception in the living room shown in the traditional residence culture, and in case of servicing a meal, the use of
the dining room and the kitchen has almost same rate.
The behavior of personal life or housework depends on concrete aspects, the life behavior like ironing, tucking the
clothes happen in the dining room, and childrens studying and visit is in process in the dining room or childrens
room.Comparing this, childrens sleeping is in process not in their room but the parents room, and by children
growing; childrens personal space is needed. 11
Following shows that change of the function of the space according to the family life cycle.

As stated as aforesaid, it can be seen that the dining room is centered space of even most peoples life and space
that multi-function is required. It can also show that after the function of the living room(a family common room,
serving the guest etc.) has been replace to the dining room, its role has changed as a role of space for the couple
themselves. It can be shown that the dinning room has been the centered space for all kinds of life behaviors like
serving guests, hobby, relaxing and housework and so on, and the bedroom has been the space for guaranteeing
couples independence from their guests and children.
If the using way of the space and organization about general function for each space is locked into, following can

3.3 Furniture Analysis : the analysis of furniture and system element for the space change
In general, the meaning of the furniture can be interpreted into the indoor element decorating mobile tools, or
interior for the fixed space.
The system furniture can mix, a couple of standardized uniformed furniture, and assemble and disassemble them
easily. It can also means the reasonable organization of the furniture with free changeability in any space.
The furniture in the inner space will be used not only as the furniture itself, but planed with practical adaptation in
the residential space. As well as the function of the residential space, the life pattern of residents can be led
reasonably. 12
The use of the systematized furniture had a feature that it can create the various flexibility of the space function
according to the location and direction of the furniture. This can provide the residents with the function suitable
for their characteristics and the way of life, and as well as the guaranteeing the collecting space according to the

12
Lim, Jong-hoon : A Study on the Interior Design through the Flexibility in Living Space, Master Cource in Graduate School

life pattern and the change of the family constituent, it can divide the fields of space. Collecting-wall system is an
example of another variability method. Collecting-wall system is a sort of artificial wall by using the system
furniture, and it can be used both with the function of the established partition and the function of collection
furniture. The collecting-wall system can be divided by the application way according to classification. Furniture
in the residence space must lead the function of the residence space and the life pattern of the residents, as well as
the simple function of furniture reasonably. In general, Furniture forms the collecting space and dissolves space as
an architectural element that can organize space. It also decides the moving-line according to the way of
arrangement and characterizes the feature of space.
This study divide the furniture type in to Furniture as a space division, Emphasized function furniture,
Multi-function furniture to find out how furniture work as an element of the space.

Multi-function - many function in one furniture

Furniture as a space division, organize the movingline according to disposition way, and space can be opened and
closed by system furniture.
This kind of furniture can be fixed or changeable, and makes space more useful for the user. Emphasized function
furniture gives the function to the space, and makes the character of the space. For example, furniture in the dress
room which has the definite function, and book shelf in the library room.
Multi-function furniture is providing various function, form, and systems. It means it has many function in one
furniture.
To adapt the change the using pattern along the problem of the established furniture and the request of residents in
the residence space, understanding of the established furniture and the request of residents and its suitable space
plan will be made.
Although the request of the established furniture, used presently, for the space furniture become various, the
well-adaptable rule is not enough to be satisfying, and the function is still fixed and simplified as a function of the
unit furniture. Therefore, the suggestion of the system furniture introduced changeability for the efficiency and
variety of space

4. Abstract the system element and furniture element according to the requirement of the residents
4.1 the space change and requirement according to the family life cycle
The change of the space following the cycle of the family life can be seen by investigating the problems and
NEEDS (desire) in the main space of the inner part of the domestic.
Table 6. The feature and problems of the family couple with school children and newly married couple and NEEDS analysis

Problems and housework Requirement for playing space and studying space for
NEEDS Need for the space for hobby and exercise children
Using another space except the main space Require the expansion of the space for children
The expansion of the built-in system
If NEEDS is abstracted through the half period of the family life and make a hypothesis with it, the fact that ,when
only a couple live, they have a desire for having a time for themselves, when they have children, they try to
concentrate on them can be predicted, so following is a brief summary.
Table 7. hypothesizing according to the change of family type

If looking into the contents of request by each room following with the change of the family life, firstly, the
expansion and multi-function is required. The potential use of the dining room, following the fact that the center
of the family life move to the dining room and the family members change by giving birth, can become more
various.
Thirdly, the function of all of the rooms, except the living room, begins to change. In the period of the newly
married family, first the space is only required for the couple, but in the period of family with children, the space
for childrens sleeping and studying will be required, Again, the ensuring of the collecting space will be needed.
It is clear that the center of the space following with the change of the family type is now moving from
kitchen=dining room=living room to dining room >kitchen> living room. The life is moving from the center of
the parents to the children, the expansion of the dining room, childrens rooms and collecting space seem to be
wanted.
Also, the demand of the easily reconstruct able system, by not following with the passage of time but the change
of the family members will be needed.
4.2 space variability and feature according to the family life cycle
To observe the requirement of the system and the space variability and the requirement of space according to
the change of the circle of the family life, we divided with the newly married couple + the couple with children
under school age + the couple with school children as the following.
Table 8. different space demand according to the changes of the family type

Newly married couple Couple with children under school age Couple with children

(children play/house hold duty) - multi-function system of living room
(cooking-table/table/home-bar)
- more collecting space (children play/house hold duty)

(children stuff) - family office space

Along the time when the newly married couple has children, the role of the living room changes from the
expansion to the reduction. This means that the easily changeable system is required because the function of the
living room furniture moves from the center of the couple to the children, and again to the couple.
The L.D.K(Living/Dining/Kitchen) space of the dining room and kitchen is mainly required as an open type.
But, in the beginning of the family life, the needs for the space requisite, which the couple themselves can live
with, will change into the needs for the open system that they can care for their children easily.
In this period, the multi-functional space where childrens playing and studying is possible will be needed in the
living room.
The space element for the function having an influence on the change of this function includes the type of the
furniture, the number and the aspect of the location.
The decorative element for that includes the color, type, material, lighting and so on.
However, the element for the furniture system is the one which can have the most effective influence on residents
psychology and require the change of the more change of the function among the rest of them.

The residents life style changes to leisure centered life style for husband and wife, to children care, and to
children education by the changes of the family member. This means the function of the furniture cope with the
changing the use of the space.
Newly wed time needs multi function system furniture in the bed room for the various activity. And also living
room faced cooking table, home bar, etc. can be applied for the house hold duty and reception in kitchen, dining
and living room.
Couple with children under school needs function for the children care, specially more need of collecting space
and system furniture for the children play and comfortable sleep for the children.
Office furniture system can be needed for the childrens education, and furniture that can be use for the education
and play when children goes to the elementary school.

At this point, Various system-furniture can be suggested by the changes of the demand of residents and changes of
the life pattern.

5. Conclusions
The participation of women in public affairs increases following with the social, cultural change and the
importance of the LDK space is on the rise, following with the introduction of 5 day duty a week and the trend of
nuclear family. Also, the rapid change of society provides various characteristics and the change of family
constituent and characteristic following with the passage of the time require the various role of the space. .
So, family-room and functional resident space, custom-made resident space is needed. And this kind of space
needs family communication, and the development of the residence element, like collecting and built-in system to
make the life efficient, is necessary.
This study looked into around the family life cycle for about 10 years time when a family is formatted and their
children enter the school, and following with the change or the family life cycle, the space desire requires the
reduction of the living room function and the expansion of the common space, by changing from the

cope with the changes of the family life cycle.
As a suggestion of the solution for the space change, we suggested furniture and system element, which is
modulated, systematized collecting furniture and the built-in system wall with the function of the partition. These
elements can be suggested around living room, kitchen and dining room. For this, the correct understandings of
the furniture system and the study about the equipment or the construct to adapt the built-in wall and the
well-adaptable system following with the various family type and the requirement for the space is required.
