Performance Objective
To succeed in this unit you must demonstrate the ability to identify and respond to children and young
people at risk. This unit refers to children 0-18 years and mandatory reporters in a variety of roles and
organisations working with children.

Assessment Context
You are required to:
All written assessments are based each state and territories Mandatory reporters requirements and
systems. Learners only complete assessments relevant to the state and territory of their employment.
Written Assessment
Due to nature of this unit, potential impacts of individual children and FACS investigations all
requirements of training package are covered in the written assessment and simulated. Simulated
assessment environments are simulations of the real-life working environment where these skills and
knowledge would be performed, with all the relevant equipment and resources of that working
environment. A workplace checklist is available however not required as all requirements covered in
written assessment.

Read scenarios and provide written responses to the questions as requested

Procedure
1. Download this assessment to your computer and save
2. Read through the entire assessment
3. Follow the specific instructions in each section
4. Submit your assessment online at the bottom of your course page which reads, Submit your
assessment here. A PDF guide is available. Ensure that you include the written responses to all
questions and any documents you create during the assessment which are required.

1. Please read your learning guide!
New requirements exist for mandatory reporters in NSW from October 2016. Many
department websites such as DEC are out of date at this time and will result in a
resubmit.
2. Teachers/Educators you must follow mandatory reporter requirements. I.e. you are
not required to inform your principal or supervisor prior to reporting. You may report
directly to the reporters line. This is particularly relevant if the allegation involves the
supervisor or a conflict of interest could occur. This includes teachers in state and
Private School. This is to ensure the safety of children and information is acted
upon.
NOTE: Only 3 attempts (i.e. two resubmits allowed) prior to re-enrollment being required.
So please read your learning guide to answer questions. DO NOT GOOGLE ANSWERS.
Task 1
a. Identify 2 long term effects on children or young people who have been abused.
b. In the table below, identify 3 indicators for each type of abuse to a child or young
person. Do not write the same indicator twice in the table.
b. Provide 2 examples outlining how you can ensure the safety of children in your
service/organisation and safeguard their rights.

d. Why is it important that professionals working with children and young people share
their concerns regarding significant risk of harm with someone in the
service/organisation (e.g. notify their supervisor), rather than dealing with the situation
on their own?

help gather information and to provide additional support when reporting.
f. Identify 1 strategy you could use to help a new staff member incorporate the
practice of safeguarding children into your centre.

b. What does the term mandatory reporter mean?
Mandatory reporting is the legislative requirement for selected classes of people to report
suspected child abuse and neglect to government authorities.
c. List the people/occupations which are mandatory reporters in your state or
territory?
Health care (e.g. registered medical practitioners, specialists, general
practice nurses, midwives, occupational therapists, speech therapists,
psychologists, dentists and other allied health professionals working in sole
practice or in public or private health practices)
Welfare (e.g. psychologists, social workers, caseworkers and youth workers)
Education (e.g. teachers, counsellors, principals)
Childrens services (e.g. child care workers, family day carers and home-
based carers)
Residential services (e.g. refuge workers)
Law enforcement (e.g. police)
d. Give 2 examples of non-leading questions you could ask or statements you
could say to a child, who you believe is at risk of harm.

means the circumstances or types of abuse which should be reported to child
protection in your state or territory. Please note these will vary depending on where
you live. Use your learning guide or mandatory reporters guide/child protection
website for your state or territory. (Do not use DEC or other governing body websites
as they may not have correct information and may result in a resubmit).
Physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, psychological harm, child/young person is a danger
to self and/or others, relinquishing care, carer concern, unborn child.
2. Recording
a. Why should you accurately record the circumstances surrounding a possible
risk of harm incident (in accordance with relevant legislation, service policies
and ethics)?
It provides an objective record of what is happening/happened, ensured
specific information is collected and provides a record of the risk of harm
incident.

L to show me and asked him to bend his arm. L made an attempt to bend his arm
and said Ouch I cant. I looked at his elbow and could see that it was swollen,
red and what appeared to be adult size bite mark. I asked How did you hurt your
arm? L stated Mummy did it. I asked What happened. He stated Mummy bit
me cause she was angry at me I asked Why was she angry? L replied cause I
wasnt a good listener.

said because mom always beat me when I play with her toys.

Hitting a child is an abuse that is not permitted in this centre and in our society. We will report
to authorities the fact that he supports hitting girls because that puts in danger her daughter.
