CAREER EPISODE 1

C.E.1.1 INTRODUCTION:

C.E.1.1.1 ACADEMIC PROJECT TITLE:

Renewable energy hybrid system for domestic appliances.

C.E.1.1.2 INSTITUTION:
COLLEGE: Department of Mechanical Engineering,

Anuradha Engineering College, Chikhli,

District: Buldhana,

State: Maharashtra

India

UNIVERSITY: Sant Ggadge Baba Amravati University, Amravati,

Maharashtra, India.

C.E.1.1.3 PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

It is widely accepted that fossil fuels will be exhausted due to its fast
continual usage. Therefore, advancement in green and clean energy is
initiated by many countries. Renewable energy sources, like solar, wind,
sea, geothermal, and biomass are the far better options. In this project,
solar and wind energy are considered as better available resources.
Also, both the energy sources are easily available in our surrounding
area. This project is most useful for rural areas where continuous
power supply is a big question for government authorities. That is why
we took this project as challenge.
C.E.1.2 PROJECT BACKGROUND

C.E.1.2.1 OBJECTIVE:

As fossil fuel is getting exhausted non-conventional and renewable

energy sources are being developed. Also, in many parts of the world,
continues and clean electricity supply is the big question for many
countries. Therefore, solar and wind energy are most reliable source of
energy. This is why we used this concept in our academic project and
we made a hybrid system which runs by solar and wind power. It can be
said the next generation energy system.

C.E.1.2.2 CONTRIBUTION IN ACADEMIC PROJECT:

Site visit for existing working hybrid system.

Exercise for measuring wind speed parameters like minimum and
maximum wind speed at particular location and elevation.
Selection of solar photovoltaic cell panel.
Material selection for windmill wind turbine blade.
Design finalization for wind turbine, blade, alternator, structure
for installation
Finalization of workshop for complete project fabrication
Hybrid system of committing
Hybrid system - wind mill and solar panels installation at our
college premises
Arrangements of small DC electric motor, battery, water pump,
light bulb for energization and actual utilization of the project.

C.E.1.3 PERSONAL ENGINEERING SUPPORT:

C.E.1.3.1

I, along with my project team members, visited one of the private

hospital where a working hybrid system, a combination of solar
photovoltaic cell panel and windmill, was installed for the in- house
hospital power utilities consumption. I went gone through each and
every installation to understand the project set up. The installation
includes solar panels harness structure, windmill, battery bank,
inverter, etc. All hospital electrical appliances were running by the
hybrid system.
C.E.1.3.2

Extensive research and Study were made for the design of windmill and
solar panels, material selection for windmill and its parts with the help
of Internet and various text books in library.

C.E.1.3.3

By wind speed measuring instrument, an anemometer, location

finalization was made for hybrid system installation.

C.E.1.3.4

I went through every machining process for fabrication, like metal

cutting, hydraulic press, painting etc. With this experience, I learned
various cutting process like laser cutting, water jet cutting, gas cutting,
CNC machining.

C.E.1.3.5

I made transportation arrangements for shifting the windmill and its

partsto college premises.

C.E.1.4 HYBRID SYSTEM SET UP AT COLLEGE PREMISES:

C.E.1.4.1

After shifting all assembly parts to our college workshop, we have

started assembling of the windmill at its designated location where we
can have maximum and continues wind speed as per research made
earlier banemometer.
C.E.1.4.2

All three dynamically balanced blades were assembled together in hub

to form wind turbine. The wind turbine shaft was connected with
alternator a shaft driven equipment.

C.E.1.4.3 The whole assembly was fixed on a tower vertical pole with fix
platform for mounting of wind turbine and generator assembly.

C.E.1.4.4 The photovoltaic cell was installed on another platform and its
output supply was connected with the windmill generator output.

C.E.1.4.5 The cell array output was about 17 volts and windmill output
was about 13- 16 volts, which was sufficient for battery charging.

Community radio and television sets
Railway signaling equipment
Battery charging
Street lighting

C.E.1.7 Summary:

Wind power can be excellent complement to a solar power system.

In the absence of sun light, wind turbine can run and generate
power. Wind power is useful where continues wind is available at
hilly areas, at higher elevation. As this system does not consume
conventional fuel, it generates green and clean energy. Therefore, it
is quite cost effective power generation equipment for domestic
purpose.
