INTRODUCTION OF OCL
Olympia chemical limited is a Chemical Company. Which is located in warcha 13km
away from quaidabad. The core business of company is manufacturing and marketing of
Soda Ash and Sodium Bicarbonate. OCL is the second largest producer of Soda Ash and
Sodium Bicarbonate in Pakistan.
1.2Back Ground of OGDCL
Prior to OGDCL's emergence, exploration activities in the country were carried out by
Pakistan Petroleum Ltd. (PPL) and Pakistan Oilfields Ltd. (POL). In 1952, PPL discovered
a giant gas field at Sui in Baluchistan. This discovery generated immense interest in
exploration and five major foreign oil companies entered into concession agreements with
the Government.
During the 1950s, these companies carried out extensive geological and geophysical
surveys and drilled 47 exploratory wells. As a result, a few small gas fields were
discovered. Despite these gas discoveries, exploration activity after having reached its
peak in mid-1950s, declined in the late fifties. Private Companies whose main objective
was to earn profit were not interested in developing the gas discoveries especially when
infrastructure and demand for gas was non-existent. With exploration activity at its lowest
ebb several foreign exploration contracting companies terminated their operation and
either reduced or relinquished land holdings in 1961.
To revive exploration in the energy sector the Government of Pakistan signed a long-term
loan Agreement on 04 March 1961 with the USSR, whereby Pakistan received 27 million
Robles to finance equipment and services of Soviet experts for exploration. Pursuant to the

11
10

Agreement, OGDC was created under an Ordinance dated 20th September 1961. The
Corporation was charged with responsibility to undertake a well thought out and
systematic exploratory programmer and to plan and promote Pakistan's oil and gas
prospects.
As an instrument of policy in the oil and gas sector, the Corporation followed the
Government instructions in matters of exploration and development.

CHAPTER #03
OLYMPIA INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
Observation of thermal power plant during internship
OLC produce electric power through thermal power plant. The total capacity of electric
power production is 18MW there is three turbines 10,5,3 MW but only 10MW turbine is in
running Condition \remaining two is on standby condition. Because that is fulfill the
demand of factory.
3.1 One Line Diagram of Company

18

3.2 Thermal power plant

In thermal power station steam is produced by burning some fossil fuel (e.g. coal, gas,
furnace oil) and then used to run a steam turbine. In OCL coal is used as fuel. Thus, a
thermal power station may sometimes called as a Steam Power Station. After the steam
passes through the steam turbine, it is condensed in a condenser and again fed back into
the boiler to become steam. This is known as ranking cycle. This article explains how
electricity is generated in thermal power plants.
Typical Layout and Working of Thermal Power

Fig 3.1

3.2.1 Coal
In a coal based thermal power plant, coal is transported from coal mines to the generating
station. Generally, bituminous coal or brown coal is used as fuel. The coal is stored in
either 'dead storage' or in 'live storage'. Dead storage is generally 40 days backup coal
storage which is used when coal supply is unavailable. Live storage is a raw coal bunker in
boiler house. The coal is cleaned in a magnetic cleaner to filter out if any iron particles are
present which may cause wear and tear in the equipment. The coal from live storage is
first crushed in small particles and then taken into pulverizer to make it in powdered form.
Fine powdered coal undergoes complete combustion, and thus pulverized coal improves
efficiency of the boiler. The ash produced after the combustion of coal is taken out of the
boiler furnace and then properly disposed. Periodic removal of ash from the boiler furnace
is necessary for the proper combustion.

19
10

3.2.2 Boiler
The mixture of pulverized coal and air (usually preheated air) is taken into boiler and then
burnt in the combustion zone. On ignition of fuel a large fireball is formed at the center of
the boiler and large amount of heat energy is radiated from it. The heat energy is utilized
to convert the water into steam at high temperature and pressure. Steel tubes run along the
boiler walls in which water is converted in steam. The flue gases from the boiler make
their way through super heater, economizer, and air preheater and finally get exhausted to
the atmosphere from the chimney.
3.2.3 Super heater
The super heater tubes are hanged at the hottest part of the boiler. The saturated steam
produced in the boiler tubes is superheated to about 540 C in the super heater. The
superheated high pressure steam is then fed to the steam turbine.
3.2. 4Economizer
An economizer is essentially a feed water heater which heats the
water before supplying to the boiler.
3.2.4 Air pre-heater
The primary air fan takes air from the atmosphere and it is the warmed in the air pre-
heater. Pre-heated air is injected with coal in the boiler. The advantage of pre-heating the
air is that it improves the coal combustion.
3.2.5 Steam turbine
High pressure super-heated steam is fed to the steam turbine which causes turbine blades
to rotate. Energy in the steam is converted into mechanical energy in the steam turbine
which acts as the prime mover. The pressure and temperature of the steam falls to a lower
value and it expands in volume as it passes through the turbine. The expanded low
pressure steam is exhausted in the condenser.
3.2.6 Condenser
The exhausted steam is condensed in the condenser by means of cold water circulation.
Here, the steam loses its pressure as well as temperature and it is converted back into
water. Condensing is essential because, compressing a fluid which is in gaseous state
requires a huge amount of energy with respect to the energy required in compressing
liquid. Thus, condensing increases efficiency of the cycle.

20
10

3.2.7 Feed water pump

The condensed water is again fed to the boiler by a feed water pump. Some water may be
lost during the cycle, which is suitably supplied from an external water source.
3.2.8 Alternator
The steam turbine is coupled to an alternator. When the turbine rotates the alternator,
electrical energy is generated. This generated electrical voltage is then stepped down with
the help of a transformer and then transmitted where it is to be utilized.

Fig3.2

3.3 Observation of control panel

After the production of electricity the main purpose is to control and regular supply to the
factory. This purpose many switch gear is used. Which control electricity and supply
regular supply. Which is the following.
3.3.1 Bus bar
In electrical power distribution, a bus bar is a strip or bar of copper, brass or aluminum
that conducts electricity form turbine and supply to main control panel.
3.3.2Main control panel
The main electrical power is come to control panel. The voltage rating is 6300v and
current is422.3A.the different types of protective device is lying in control panel .which is

Fig2.3
3.3.3 Circuit Breaker
Electrical circuit breaker is a switching device which can be operated manually and
automatically for controlling and protection of electrical power system respectively. As the
modern power system deals with huge currents, the special attention should be given
during designing of circuit breaker for safe interruption of arc produced during the
operation of circuit breaker. In OCL main breaker rating is 3200A.

Fig 3.4
3.3.4 Relay
In main control panel many relay is used for protection of electrical equipment. Each relay
give protection of one fault therefore different relay is used. Such as short circuit relay,
earth fault relay, differential relay. Relay monitor the supply if fault is occur then they trip
the main breaker and protect the electrical equipment.
3.3.5 Fuse
In OCL on main transmission line fuse is lying .The fuse used in OCL is HRC (high
reaching capacity) and fuse load break switch. HRC fuse is 3200A rating .FLBS is used
for open or close on load condition.
One another protective device which is used for alternator protection is NGR.

3.3.6 Natural ground resistance

NGR Neutral Grounding Resistors are used in industrial power systems for resistance
grounding of wye- connected generators and transformers. A neutral grounding resistor
limits the fault current to a value which is sufficient enough to operate protective relays,
yet prevent unwanted fault damage. The NGR in OCL power house is 20.8 Ohm.
3.4 Observation of sub station

23
10

A substation is a part of an electrical generation, transmission, and distribution system.

Substations transform voltage from high to low, or the reverse, or perform any of several
other important functions. In OCL 12 substation each substation is consist of one step
down transformer. The rating of transformer is 2000KVA.the primary side voltage is
6300V and current is 183.3A .that convert these high voltage into low voltage 415V and
step up the current into2783.5A.main circuit breaker and relay is connected on both side of
transformer which protect it from fault. Volt meter and ampere meter is connected on both
side which measure voltage and current. The transformer is lying near the load because
losses is directly depend on length of conductor.
3.5 Transformer
Transformer is electrostatic device which convert voltage one level to another level but
take frequency constant. Transformer work on mutual induction rule.it is consist of two
winding primary and secondary. In OCL 12 transformer is lying. Each transformer is
2000KVA.The all transformers is step down. Which convert 6300V to 415V. The
connection is primary side delta and secondary side is star. The part of transformer is
following.

Fig 3.5

3.5.1 Core
Core is the main body of transformer. Winding is lying inside the core. Core is consist of
winding and oil.
3.5.2 Primary side
Primary side that which is connected with supply incoming side which also called high
voltage side. Which is connected in delta connection. Primary side voltage is 6300V and
current is 183.3A.
3.5.3 Secondary side
Secondary side is that which is supply to load. It is low voltage side 415V
24
10

3.5.4 Conservator tank

Conservative tank is play a vital role because we know that oil is present in transformer.
So when it became hot then oil expand so it take space so the expand oil is come in
conservative tank.
3.5.5 Buchholz relay
Buchholz relay is lying between the core and conservator tank. Buchholz relay is give
protection to transformer. If fault is occur in transformer buchholz relay off the main
breaker on primary side .Main fault of transformer is short circuit of winding and
temperature of winding increase.
3.5.6 Oil gauge
Oil is very important role in transformer. Oil is used for insulation and cooling propose
.The oil gauge is lying on the body of transformer which show the level of oil.
3.5.7 Temperature meter
Temperature meter is also lying on transformer body which show the temperature of
winding and oil .the maximum temperature of transformer is 50C.the cooling method
used in OCL transformer is oil natural air natural.(ONAN)
3.6 Motor
Motor is a machine which convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. Motor is two
main part stator and rotor. Many motor is used in factory for different propose. Which i see
and supervisor tell me about them. These motor is very high rating power. Maximum
motor used in factory is AC motor. In factory require different speed of motor .Speed can
be change by changing pole and frequency. The pole changing is not possible in factory.
So they change the frequency of supply. For changing frequency the inverter is use which
is also called variable frequency drive .which I observe nearly.
3.7 Workshop
Electrical workshop is place where all fluted electrical machinery is come here. In OCL as
own electrical workshop where well skill technician is doing work .all small and large
rating motor large and other electrical equipment prepare and it maintains. In workshop all
types of motor is rewind and it annual maintain take.
3.8 Practical work done during internship
2.8.1 Work on removing inverter
One inverter is damage in my internship period and I work with supervisor when they
removing it from it place. I open the main supply wire and help that in removing it place
and get it work shop.

I my internship duration one 450KW motor winding is burn. I did work with motor
winding supervisor sir mushtaq. First we remove the rotor with help of hoist crane and
then remove the burn winding of stator .then we clean the slot of stator and start
installation of new winding. The motor is 24 pole and 48 slot.
3.8.3Changing bearing of motor
I work in maintain workshop in my internship duration. Change the bearing of motor first
we remove the old bearing which lying on shaft motor. Then we heated the new bearing
with the help of induction heater motor which soft the new bearing. Then inter new
bearing in shaft.
3.8.4ON/OFF different motor and taking reading of load current
In my internship duration I work with supervisor on /off different motor and note take
reading. How many current it takes. Current reading is take from ampere meter which is
lying with breaker. Where meter is not connected there use clamp meter is use for taking
reading.

CH # 04 Conclusions

4.1 My Objectives
My achievements before internship I knew many theories and working principles of power
system and related equipments but from internship I acquired practical knowledge about

power system engineering and its equipment. Here, I always tried to relate my academic
courses with practical participation of power generation process. Beside I also faced some
practical problems which was not taught in my academic courses. My communication skill
also improved through communication with different instructor. Therefore, I made good
achievements with my industrial training which will help me in my future.
4.2 Problem faced
There are some problems which I faced during internship period. The problems are given
below
My instructor at OGDCL and OCL showed me every equipment practically but did not
relate with theory most of the times.
Practical participation in different works of OGDCL & OCl would give more experience
but practical participation was not allowed for internship student.
Company did not provide me enough data for security purpose.
4.3 Recommendations
Some recommendations are given below for the students to do their internship program in
a better way
The internship program should be scheduled in such a way so that it does not clash with
the university classes.
More theoretical knowledge about power generation, power equipments should be learnt
before going for internship. Hence students must complete the related courses to their
internship before joining the program. Taking the courses before the internship helps the
students understand the topic much better.
4.4 Discussion
In case of power generation, OCL is chemical plant and OGDCL is the company of
Production of oil and gas. Last 20-02-2017 I went to OGDCL Company, for my internship
program. I visited the Rig, I observed how rig is working. There are several switch gear
and control rooms to control the overall system of sreaching Oil and gas. Various types of
relays used for protective purposes that are also controlled in control room. I visited
Diesel generator of OGDCl. I visited the control panel and how to control the various
component. I visited the distribution section of OGDCL. OGDCL (Oil and gas
Development Company limited) is a petroleum company. I completed my internship of 9
week in OGDCL rig N5. There I work in electrical department. I work and observe the
diesel generator, transformer and its protective device, silicon control rectifier, variable
frequency drive and different motor sued on rig .during my internship I work with

supervisor on motor maintains and changing bearing of motor and on/off motor. I work
as a generator operator and changing engine oil of generator after completed hundred
hours on running .there I observe and understand the working related electrical on rig.
There I can improve my knowledge about electrical system.
Last 26-04-2017 I went to OCL, I work in electrical department. I work and observe the
powerhouse, transformer and its protective device, substation, electrical workshop and
other electrical system .during my internship work with supervisor on motor rewinding
and changing bearing of motor and on/off motor and taking read of load current. I
practically observe thermal power plant and it control panel. I work with supervisor
remove inverter and changing bearing of motor. Where I can improve my knowledge
about electrical system.
