Chemical Reaction
Teacher Mrs Morritt Assessment Task 12
Demonstration

Assessment Task 12 Design Brief

Demonstrate a chemical reaction to a Lower School Science Class

Theme: Description and Presentation of Chemical Reaction

The final product for this Assessment Task 12 is to perform a chemical reaction to a class. You will
describe the reaction and explain how it works, using chemical equations and the Collision Theory.

RESEARCH / DOCUMENTATION Science workbook showing a portfolio of detailed Investigation

and research notes. Part A: Compile Lists to hand to the Laboratory Technicians: Method as a List
of steps, List of Chemicals to order.
Part B: Infographic describing and explaining the reaction
MATERIALS: Variety of drawing media, variety of chemicals, apparatus and safety apparatus

reaction-demonstrations.html

PROCESSES: Order equipment from the Laboratory Technicians. Trial the reaction. Adjust as
necessary. Demonstrate the reaction to the class. If time permits we can demonstrate and inspire
some Year 8 classes as well.

CRITERIA: Criteria for the Reaction Demonstration

PART A: Planning - Lists for Laboratory Technicians
1. Write the chemical equation for the reaction.
2. Write a Method using a list of steps.
3. Write a list of chemicals needed, including the quantities and concentrations if the chemicals
are solution.
4. Write a list of safety equipment
PART B Description of the reaction - Infographic
5. Use the Black Box Model to draw an Infographic describing the reactant chemicals and
energy involved, the product chemicals and energy involved. Draw and describe what is
happening during the reaction, using the Collision Theory (or Atomic Theory if you are doing
flame tests)
6. Describe where this reaction is applied in real life.
7. Include references.
TIMELINE: Method and Equipment Lists due by Wednesday 23 August.
Trialling the reaction on Wednesday 30 August
PRESENTATION:
Submit Part A to Laboratory Technicians by Wednesday 23 August
Submit Part B to Teacher by Wednesday 30 August

Science Inquiry Skills

construct questions for investigation; propose hypotheses; and predict possible outcomes
plan, select and use appropriate investigation methods, to collect reliable data; assess risk and address ethical
issues associated with these methods

conduct investigations safely, competently and methodically for the collection of valid and reliable data
represent data in meaningful and useful ways; organise and analyse data to identify trends and patterns;
qualitatively describe sources of measurement error and use evidence to make and justify conclusions
interpret a range of scientific and media texts, and evaluate the conclusions by considering the quality of
available evidence
use appropriate representations, to communicate conceptual understanding, solve problems and make
predictions
communicate scientific ideas and information for a particular purpose, using appropriate scientific language,
conventions and representations

Science as a Human Endeavour

the use of scientific knowledge is influenced by social, economic, cultural and ethical considerations
the use of scientific knowledge may have beneficial and/or harmful and/or unintended consequences

scientific knowledge can enable scientists to offer valid explanations and make reliable predictions

Science Understanding
Atomic structure
the properties of elements, compounds and mixtures determine the use of substances

Chemical reactions
rearrangement of matter occurs during chemical reactions to form new substances

chemical reactions involve energy; different types of reactions are used to produce a variety of products
