Hite Elementary Trailblazers Team

Dear Parents,

Im pleased to take this opportunity to meet you and welcome your child to my class and
the Trailblazers Team. A good learning experience is built on a cooperative effort between
parent, child and teacher. My expectations for conduct and standards for academic growth are
high. With your participation in and out of the classroom we can look forward to a productive,
creative and fun year together!

I am excited about this year. I know we will work together to make it one of growth,
discovery, and significance for your child.

According to Kentucky Core Academic Standards, KCAS, your 4th grade student will be
tested in reading, Language Mechanics (editing and grammar), science and math this year.
Students will also be completing a working writing portfolio to be included in their cumulative
folder. Further information on the above will come as the school year progresses.

Our intermediate team, Trailblazers, consist of 3 classroom units. We teach our own
writing workshop model, reading enrichment, and word work. Mr. Donohue will teach reading
and social studies content. Mrs. Stanford will teach science and I will teach math. As a team we
plan WIN (What I Need) intervention Fridays scheduled when we attend school for a full five
days.

Again welcome! Please feel free to contact me about any concerns large or small. Also,
leave a message with the office and Ill return your call at my earliest convenience or email
stacey.porter@jefferson.kyschools.us

Please review with your child our school norms and consequences, found in your childs
first day folder.

See you Thursday, September 7th, 2017 at the Open House.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Porter

Writing Workshop Model - Homeroom Teacher/Team

Homework is given Monday-Thursday other than projects. It should only take your child 35 to
45 minutes nightly to complete homework. If a student for some reason does not finish his or
her class work during the designated time this will become homework on top of the scheduled
assignment. Math homework is assigned nightly Monday thru Thursday.

Each student has chosen a folder to go home nightly. The folder along with their daily
planner should go with them to other classes to ensure papers and assignments get home. All
students copy homework into their daily planners each class period.

All corrected assignments will be sent home on Mondays in their supplied Monday
folder. Be looking for a purple folder to come home. Please sign and return on Tuesday.

The following is a grade scale

A 100%-90% Above Standards
B 89%-80% Meets Standards
C 79%-70% Approaching Standards
D 69%-60% Below Standards
U Below 60% Substantially Below Standards

LEVELS:
4 I can do this on my own, explain clearly & teach someone else, how to do it.
3 I can do this on my own without help & show my understanding.
2 I can do this with help or an example to follow; I kind of get it, but may make a mistake.
1 I am starting to get it, but am still confused and do not understand all the steps.
0 Even with help I still dont understand and cant figure out what Im doing wrong.

Turning in all assignments is important to the success and learning in the classroom. I
will work hard to communicate with you and your child regarding missing work, but it is
ultimately your childs responsibility to turn in assignments on time or immediately after an
illness in the specified time per our school policy.
