AUTOMOTIVE CHARGING SYSTEM

Purpose:

-Convert mechanical energy to electrical energy

-recharge battery

-provide power for electrical accessories

-reserve power when needed

COMPONENTS OF CHARGING SYSTEM

BATTERY

ALTERNATOR

VOLTAGE REGULATOR

CHARGE INDICATOR (LAMP OR GAUGE)

AUTOMOTIVE BATTERY

- A rechargeable battery that supplies electrical energy to a motor vehicle.

-SLI Battery (Starting-Light-ignition)

-main purpose: start the engine.

ALTENATOR

- A generator that produce alternative current.

- generates electrical power to run accessories and to recharge the batteries.

Components of alternator:

- The Rotor

- A rotating part of alternator.

- A powerful magnet that passes close to wire loops of a stator.

The Stator

-a stationary set of wire coil windings, inside which a rotor revolves.

- the conductor that has voltage induced into it by the rotor.

The Diodes

- Changes negative current into positive output.

- Convert AC to pulsing DC volts

- 3 positive biased diodes

- 3 negative biased diodes

The Voltage Regulator

- Regulates system voltage.

- an electrical traffic cop to control alternator output.

- senses when the batteries need recharging, or when the vehicles electrical needs increase, and adjusts the alternators
output accordingly.

The Warning lamp

- Used to warn the driver if something wrong with the charging system.

- it is a voltmeter or ammeter which is mounted on dash board of an automobile.

COMMON PROBLEM IN CHARGING SYSTEM

PROBLEM CAUSED BY WHAT TO DO

NOISY ALTERNATOR Loose mountings Tighten mounting bolts
Loose drive pulley Tighten pulley
Worn bearings Have bearing replaced
Brush noise Have brushes clean
Internal Circuits Have alternator replaced

CAR LIGHT BULBS CONTINUALLY Alternator/regulator overcharging Have Voltage regulator/

BURN OUT-BATTERY NEEDS WATER Alternator overhauled
CONTINUALLY

CAR LIGHTS FLARE ON ACCELERATION Battery low Charge or replace battery

Internal alternator/regulators
