The Geographic Information Systems
have been very helpful to us in various
fields such as Governmental,
Environment, Advertising, Insurance,
Technology, Medical etc. The Medical
Industry has made great use of GIS.
Medical issues are dealt on a larger scale
in case of some serious diseases or
epidemics. We can virtually map the
data using GIS and try and find out the
major outbreak areas and can take
immediate actions for mitigating the
epidemic situation. Here are enlisted
some of the points in which we can see
GIS as an effective tool for Medical
Industry:
We can map the areas of our
country which are prone to
diseases or epidemics caused due
to man-made factors( diseases
caused due to pollution, due to
unhygienic living conditions,
consumption of harmful food
materials, etc.) or natural
factors( Tsunami, Fire,
Earthquakes, Draughts, Famines,
Global-Warming etc.) .
We can identify such areas and
make their division into different

categories according to the level of
need of mitigation.
After categorization, we can feed
all the related data for individual
categories including cause of
disease, source of disease, no. of
people that may or are suffering
from disease, different no. of
people at different stages of that
particular disease, how many
people have / do not have access to
the treatment etc.
According to the information fed
in the system Government can find
out multiple solutions for the
problems such as providing
medical facilities at low cost to
those who do not have access to it,
setting up medical camps where
there is situation of epidemics,
remaining prepared with all the
facilities in advance if diseases due
to natural or man-made factors are
forecasted to occur in near future,
etc.
