Research Proposal: Alyssa Giuliano, Brielle Barbie and Brad Kellam

What will your Investigation topic/ question be?

Our groups Investigations question is How has music influenced Melbourne's culture and how has
it brought together Melbourne's community? We are going to be studying how the presence of
Melbournes music has influenced the culture of Melbourne and how it had bonded people all over
Melbourne into a community.

What is interesting about this topic? Why is it engaging and relevant to the people of Melbourne?

Considering how many people in school listen listen or play music, and how its shaped them and
their personality, we'll ask music stores and civilians how their personal taste in music has brought
them closer to others, and how its affected the culture of their lives, and others around them. We
will also delve into the different genres and societies of music such as bands, seasonal music,
orchestras, music tv show contestants, and many more. It will be very interesting to explore this, as
this topic can become very personal to everyone as their input matters to the topic. It will also be
interesting to see music - something we take for granted - be recognised and brought to attention.
This topic is very relevant to the people of Melbourne as everyone has an opinion and personal
choice of preferred music, so we are going show how having a personal opinion of music has
influenced the greater culture and community of Melbourne.

What skills do you think you will need to succeed at this task? Both as a team and individually?

For this task, we are going to need a wide range of skills if we want it to be a success. We will
need strong research skills, as well as social skills. We will also need skills including, but not
limited to patience, politeness, organisation, time management, creativity, determination,
perseverance, problem solving, logic and directional skills. We will all need this as a team so we
can successfully plan our trip into the city, book interviews, plan travel times, be able to politely
interact with the public, have background knowledge on the topic, have enough time to finish the
assignment, be able to solve any unexpected problems that arise and to stay stay determined and
persevere when we feel as though the task might be difficult.

Individually, we all bring something different into the group:

Brielle: creativity, confidence in social situations, hard working and organised
Alyssa: logical thinker, hard working, good at researching, plays a leadership role and organised
Brad: compliant, good listener, hard working and has many contacts in the music industry

Individually, we are all going to have to pull together all our skills and attribute them together to
make a great team. We will all have to communicate what we are doing, and all work to our
strengths so we can put together out thoughts and ideas to make an amazing assignment. We will
need the skills of team work, reason, logic, perseverance, hard work, understanding and many
more. This way, as we all have our different strengths, we are all able to contribute to the part that
the others in the group may be lacking, so our assignment is strong in all aspects.

In what ways do you propose to research/collect evidence on this topic?

For this topic, we have many mediums for collecting evidence and research. These include
interviewing music stores, interviewing bands/ artists, interviewing contestants of music based tv
shows, surveying the general public, using books to gather information, using the internet to gather
information, using previous interviews and surveys to gather information off them, pamphlets from
music stores, articles written on the topic and many more ways. We plan to interview many people,
such as: Serenity Palomares - X Factor contestant, Rooftop Recording Studio - residential DJ,
Luck Entertainment - musicians signed to the label and The Bake House Studios - residential DJ
and musicians. We also are planning to visit venues such as the State Library and music stores
like Billy Hyde Music Store, to be able to gather other resources such as books and
pamphlets. This way, we will exceed a sufficient amount of information that will allows us to answer
the topic question, and find a conclusion to the topic, with ease.

What resources do you have available to you now? What further resources will you need to find/
develop over the course of your investigation?

The resources available to us now are our phones/ ipads which we are able to gather internet
based information off of. We also have books available to use from out local libraries. To further
develop our exploration of our topic, we will need to find pamphlets and develop surveys and
interviews. This will ensure we have enough information and resources to complete our
assignment to a hight standard.

Literature Review: find three articles/ interviews/ clips about your topic, and for each one, suggest
reasons why these might be useful to your investigation.

This article shows that music within our community increases our understanding of cultural
diversity. It also allows us to empathise with others and build a stronger sense of community
amongst others. Not only does music increase our coordination, it also allows to be more
cooperate with others better. Music gives us the opportunity to put aside our differences and gather
together, and have fun. Despite having different cultures and different types and styles of music
it's all the same. Music is the soul and heart of our earth.

This article and video clip both show music within our community and how music has influenced
out culture. We see within this video and article, that a blind girl named Lilly has a dream of
becoming a famous singer and performing on stage. She was inspired by music at a young age,
where her mum says that she never went to sleep unless music as playing. Through the Carols By
Candlelight - an event held where a community of singers all come together to sing Christmas
Carols and raise proceeds for the blind - Lily was able to meet one of her favourite opera singers,
Michael Leonardi. As well as this, Carols By Candlelight also has become a huge part of our
community, to the extreme where people organise their Christmas Eve so they are able to view the
carols with their family. Thought the music of Carols By Candlelight, we have made a community of
people who celebrate Christmas with carols, as well as having a new event integrated into our
culture.

This article on Melbourne music culture will be extremely helpful as it helps navigate Melbournes
music hotspots and gives mini explanations on the different types of music culture found all
through out Melbourne. This article will be good to give us little leads on where to navigate our
investigation further, and help us find Melbournes music community and culture hotspots, as well
as ideas for companies to interview and venues visit. We can also check what events are on at
certain venues and use them to our advantage so we can survey people about their music culture.

What potential problems or pitfalls can you identify that might hinder your investigation? Are there
solutions to these?

There are a few potential pitfalls that might deter our investigation. For example, if we cannot get
enough people to interview, this could cause us to have an insufficient amount of primary research
to add to the assignment. To overcome this, we would have to book other reliable interviews with
contacts we know, and have to conduct them throughout our own time. Another potential issue is
that is that since we are under the age of 18, many studios and bars will decline our entrance, to
get over this we will have to research deeper for studios and make sure we contact them, asking if
patrons our age can enter or be granted special access for the interviews.

How do you intend to present your findings/ information? How will this be interesting to your
intended audience?

We intend to present our finding through a website. A website is the best option as we then can
add many pages, so our sub heading for the topics can be organised in an clear, neat way. We can
add pages of information onto the website, allowing us to present our information and findings in a
neat, logical way. We also chose a website as well, as you can add many resources and external
links/ ideas into your presentation such as photos, videos, survey results, comment section,
feedback section, maps and many other enhancing options. A website will also be the most
interactive and interesting choice of presentation as we then can give out the link to our website
and let our audience explore and interact with the website themselves, instead of forcing them to
sit through a boring presentation. They get to see the many varieties of ways the information has
been presented and find the website very interesting and fun to control.
