You are on page 1of 2

On Friday, you learned that for systems that are at a constant pressure:

Heat (q) = change in enthalpy (H)

Which led to the following formula:

q = m x cp x T

Where:

m = mass (g)

cp = specific heat capacity

T = change in temperature (Final Temperature Initial Temperature = T)

Therefore, if we are given 3 of the variables above, we should be able to solve for the missing

variable. Using algebra, we should be able to solve for mass, specific heat, or change in

temperature!!

Example 1:

A 25.0 g sample of titanium is heated from 25.25 C to 75.25 C. Determine the amount of energy this

requires. (specific heat capacity of titanium = 0.5526 J/g*C)

To solve:

Problem is asking us for ENERGY (q)

Problem gives us: mass (25.0g), specific heat (0.5526 J/g*C) and change in temperature (25.25 C to

75.25 C = T = 50.00 C)

q = (25.0g)(0.5526 J/g*C)(50.00C)

q = 691 J

Example 2:

What mass of lead is needed to absorb 54,000J of energy if its temperature is increased by 2.5C?

(specific heat capacity of lead = 0.1276 J/g*C)

To solve:

Problem is asking us for MASS (m)

Problem gives us: energy (q), specific heat (0.1276 J/g*C), and change in temperature (2.5 C)

We need to solve for MASS (m) using ALGEBRA we need to get (m) by itself, so divide both sides by

(cp x T)

q = m x cp x T; solve for m

m = q__

cp x T

m = 54,000/(0.1276 * 2.5)

m = 169,278 g

DO THE BEST YOU CAN TO PRACTICE THE EXAMPLES ON THE NEXT PAGE!

Heat Calculations

a. Perform calculations using: (q= m c T) b. Determine if its endothermic or exothermic

1. Gold has a specific heat of 0.129 J/(gC). How 2. An unknown substance with a mass of 100 grams

many joules of heat energy are required to raise absorbs 1000 J while undergoing a temperature

the temperature of 15 grams of gold from 22 C to increase of 15 C. What is the specific heat of the

85 C? substance?

3. If the temperature of 34.4 g of ethanol 4. Graphite has a specific heat of 0.709 J/(gC).

increases from 25 C to 78.8 C, how much heat has If a 25 gram piece of graphite is cooled from 35

been absorbed by the ethanol? The specific heat C to 18 C, how much energy was lost by the

of ethanol is 2.44 J/(gC) graphite?

5. Copper has a specific heat of 0.385 J/(gC). A 6. 45 grams of an unknown substance undergoes a

piece of copper absorbs 5000 J of energy and temperature increase of 38 C after absorbing

undergoes a temperature change from 100 C to 4172.4 Joules. What is the specific heat of the

200 C. What is the mass of the piece of copper? substance? Look at the table on page 513 of your

book, and identify the substance.

7. A 40 g sample of water absorbs 500 Joules of 8. If 335 g of water at 65.5 C loses 9750 J of

energy. How much did the water temperature heat, what is the final temperature of the water?

change? The specific heat of water is 4.18 J/(gC). Liquid water has a specific heat of 4.18 J/(gC).
