Estimation of the Interface Temperature, T2:

Figure 1: Schematic of thermal resistance network in the Reactor.

Data used:

Inner Radius of the Reactor, r1 = 1.3 m,

Interface Radius of the Reactor, r2 = 1.3045 m,
Outer Radius of the Reactor, r3 = 1.4835 m,
Height of the Reactor, L = 28.9284 m,
Thermal conductivity of SS347, k1 = 21.4 W/m.K,
Thermal conductivity of T22, k2 = 33 W/m.K
Temperature at the Inner Radius of the Reactor, T1 = 425C
Temperature at the Outer Radius of the Reactor, T3 = 100C
Method:

Taking T1 and T3 as 425C and 100C, thermal resistances R1 and R2 are calculated.

Ri and Ro are neglected.

Steady rate of Heat Transfer from the Reactor becomes,
r
ln
= r
+ = =
2 2
Result:

Temperature at the interface, T2 = 412C

Estimation of the differential Thermal Stresses:

Figure 2: Stress system at common surface (i.e. interface)

Data used:

Inner Radius of the Reactor, r1 = 1.3 m,

Interface Radius of the Reactor, r 2 = 1.3045 m,
Outer Radius of the Reactor, r3 = 1.4835 m,
Height of the Reactor, L = 28.9284 m,
Fluid pressure of the Reactor, Pi = 210 kg/cm2 = 20.594 MPa
Coefficient of linear expansion of SS347, i = 18.4 x 10-6/K
Coefficient of linear expansion of T22, o = 14.6 x 10-6/K
Temperature at the interface, T2 = 412C
Room Temperature, T1 = 24C
Elastic modulus of SS347, Ei = 193 GPa
Elastic modulus of T22, Eo = 167 GPa
Poisson's ratio of SS347, ni = 0.28
Poisson's ratio of T22, no = 0.33
Method:

and are the hoop stresses set up at the common interface surfaces in T22 and SS347
respectively due to the differential thermal expansion and the effective increase in radial stress at
the common junction surface caused by the same effect, i.e. = . However, any radial
pressure at the common interface will produce hoop tension in the outer cylinder but hoop
compression in the inner cylinder.
Differential thermal stresses are calculated using Lames equations and the following equation
1 1
+ + = [ ][ ]

Result:

Calculated values of Hoop stresses, & and Radial stress, at the interface are given below:
Pi [ ]
1. 0 388 7.45 -275.85 0.95
2 -20.594 388 163.03 -94.04 20.85
