SHAMING
LIFE WILL THROW BRICKS AT YOU,
BUT MAKE SURE YOU RETURN IT
WITH A BIG BUILDING
Olayode
BODY
X Shaming
It is no longer news that over 60% of fat, big, plus size women go into
depression, become anorexic and have suicidal thoughts every year around
the world because of the rejection, mockery, shame, neglect and other bad
things that comes with the fact that they are fat and plus sized.
It is called BODY SHAMING. This is the act of humiliating someone by
making mockery or critical comments about their body shape or size. All of
this hatred because of fat and cellulites. All this shaming because the world
has an ideology and size as to what sexy should be. All the neglect because
someone does not fit into a particular cloth size. Stores marginalize them.
They go around with low self esteem, walk around with no confidence,
seeking acceptance from the people of the earth.

'You're too fat', 'Go on a diet', 'What were you looking at till you got this
fat', 'Watch your weight', 'Orobo', 'Fat ass', all this and many more are said to
shame and demoralize these people. Some even use deadly stares and facial
expressions to kill some plus sized people internally. Due to all this shaming
by imperfect people, these fat people are forced to put themselves in a shell,
they are depressed, they become anorexic, starve themselves day in day out
just to look and appear as 'PERFECT' before the world. Damn! Some even go
to the extent of committing suicide.
The thing is that all of these people bodyshaming are not even perfect, most
of them are just out to make people feel inferior, most of them are out to
make people sad because they (body shamers) are sad so why believe and
confine yourself to what an ordinary human being thinks or says? Why
become sad and depressed because of indecisive and imperfect people?
Stop comparing yourself to surgically enhanced people, stop comparing
yourself to photoshopped bodies, stop comparing yourself to women who
have insecurities of their own. Embrace yourselves, your fat, your cellulites,
your flabs, your rolls and be happy.

Remember that you don't need to lose weight in order to have a 'bikini
body', you don't need to lose weight to be worthy of respect and love.
Another woman's beauty does not mean the absence of your own. To be
beautiful means to be yourself, not a replica of your favorite celebrities.
Be happy and live unapologetically, don't forget that You Only Live Once
(YOLO).

WORDS ASSOCIATED WITH THE CINEMATIC UNIVERSE

People only see the end result of a systematic set of processes but they hardly
ever care to bother about what goes on before there is a movie.

The movie industry has been painted to be a cut throat one and it is rightly so.
In Hollywood, when actresses reach a certain age, they are consigned to certain
'motherly' roles. Although the male contemporaries are allowed to run for 5-7
years more, before the same happens to them; the same applies to Bollywood.
Coming back home to Nollywood and their stereotypical movies it is the same
and much worse, with 30-something year old actors acting out roles meant for
14 year old. Actors even have it easy, in the movie industry if you haven't
directed a chart-topping, blockbuster movie you are not a 'seasoned' or 'good'
director. No-one nowhere would take you seriously and give you the chance to
prove yourself. I am not being bias! Truth is, no director has ever been made by
laughing on the street and receiving a contract to be a voice over or motion
caption artist. There are no scouts for directors. Directors don't go to auditions
and manage to appear in a scene. Considering the budget size of some these
great movies, many budding directors give up almost immediately.
As an upcoming director, you have to source for or even write a moving script
because it either the scriptwriter doesn't trust the 'newbie' enough to interpret and
portray the script or the 'newbie' can't afford the somewhat ridiculous price
placed on the script. What concerns a director with the script isn't that the
producers' job, you may wonder? Well that only happens in big companies,
where the company sorts through scripts to know which movie to produce and
select the directors based on their experience and the success of their previous
works. In the real world, script writers either contact the directors of their choice.
Even when you get the script that shake worlds, experienced 'A-List' actors
wouldn't want to act in your movie because unlike us, they understand that no
matter how good an actor is if the director doesn't know how to direct well, the
movie is in jeopardy. They wouldn't want to associate themselves with an
upcoming director, because he hasn't proven himself.

Let's assume you manage to get both script and actors there is the problem of
funds. In fact you need money to get both script and actors. If you've ever come
across the budget for some movies, you would be dumbfounded and stupefied at
once. An average episode of Game of Thrones costs between 6-8 million
dollars. Very few Producers will be willing to risk the huge amounts of money
used in producing movies by giving it to someone who hasn't had any
experience whatsoever, apart from church drama group productions. The
upcoming director our 'newbie' cannot afford to solely fund his dream, because
he needs to pay his crew, actors and acquire some large and small pieces of
equipment for the movie.
If you manage to overcome these obstacles and produce a good movie, then
comes the biggest challenge of all, to make an even greater movie, to show that
the first success was a fluke or beginner's luck.
These are just some of the myriad of problems an upcoming director faces.
Although there are institutions where one can go to learn directing. But what's
the point of studying only to come out and not be able to do anything, because
no one would give you the experience you need. Word of advice, if you don't
give us experience are we supposed to pick them on the floor.

THE INTERVIEW
Crazitive African Magazine: Can we meet you?
Olayode Juliana: I'm Olayode Juliana. I'm a Christian. I love God. I'm Yoruba, yes
for some people they think I'm not Yoruba, they think I'm Igbo so I'm Yoruba from
Ogun state and I'm the last girl of the family of six (6) and basically that's all.
CAM: So how did you get into Acting?
OJ: I went for auditions. My first audition, I was on my way to church that evening
for choir rehearsals and then I got a call from my friend she said 'Hey Juliana come,
there's an audition somewhere' and I'm like 'no no no, I need to go for choir
rehearsals' and she said 'come come come I've told the director' blah blah blah so I
said ok then I didn't want to go and then she gave someone the phone to speak
with me so I said ok let me just check out the place and see what it looks like.
When I got there, I was shocked at the crowd, she didn't tell me there was crowd, if
she had told me, I wouldn't have gone because I don't like crowd so she told me
'ehnnn nobody dey here, just come'. So when I got there and saw the crowd, I
wanted to just run back, first of all I was tying my hair, I was wearing skirt, I was
looking aarrrggghhh, I didn't know how an audition looked like so I saw people
dressing as if they were going for fashion competition, makeup and stuff so
somehow I was like no no no I'm going back, I can't wait for this audition then she
talked me into staying so I went to hide in the restroom until it was my turn and I
later came out when it was my turn,I got there. I saw the judges, I became a
stammerer, could not read my scripts, I was just stammering and then they were
nice so they told me 'calm down, we think you're nervous' so I went back to read
the script and then I did it and they said 'ok , we'll get back to you'. I knew they
wouldn't get back to me because I did rubbish so months after they called and
then that was my first movie. It was a series 'me, myself and my diary' so that was
the first time I did, I ever featured in any movie.
CAM: Whatare the challenges in pursuing your career and
how have you overcome them?
OJ: There are lots of challenges but the thing is we learn that in life, there will
always be challenges but you just face your challenge and know that life would
throw bricks at you but make sure you return it with a big building. So yeah, lots of
challenges, there are some roles that I cant do, there are some things I cant do
there are some things I can't do so I get to go for different auditions and then they
say 'can you do this', I'm like 'NO', 'urrggghh you're not ready to be an actress', it's
a no no for me, like ahhh seriously, I keep going for different auditions and they say
no no no because you can't do this, because you can't wear this clothes or kiss or
allow someone do this to you then you're not ready to be an actress but finally
God came through and God did it and basically that's it.
CAM: Being an actress, Christian and an activist by saying
NO to premarital sex in this generation, how do you deal
with the back lash you might get from people?
OJ: The thing is in life people would always talk whether you're doing the right or
wrong thing and its sad that in the world of today, we get people applauding those
who are doing it wrong such that if you upload a video on social media on
somebody twerking , you'd see so many views, nobody is going to say 'why are you
twerking', everybody would say 'ohhh she's such a good twerker' tagging their
friends to come and see the video but the moment you upload a video saying no
to premarital sex and all, everybody starts to say 'hey, we've so many wahala going
on in the world', 'people are dying', 'President is not in the country', blah blah blah
and 'this is what you're saying' so yes, you'd always get people to talk you down
but stand for what you believe in as long as you can hold on to what you believe.
Get your mind off the noise, there would be so many noise but keep your focus
and YES it's a big deal for me because first God commanded it that we should stay
off premarital sex and even stay off sex with other people in marriage that is be
faithful to your wife or husband. Yes, its difficult, challenging, could be really tiring
reading comments from people who are so myopic and don't even understand, they
don't have a clue why you're doing it but it's Gods course and as far as its Gods
course it means a lot to me so I'm an advocate of sexual purity.
CAM: So asides Acting, what else do you do?
OJ: I sing in church.
CAM: But you've never sang on your Instagram page?
OJ: I did one recently but then I'm so busy sometimes I don't even have time to do
all of that but I sing, I write, I MC, I'm a blogger though I'm new into that, Yeah so,
basically.
CAM:Your page has been such an inspiration to many
people, any comments as regards that?
OJ: Yes, errm I had no clue how much people followed my posts because
sometimes my friends say 'Juliana don't you think you're always preaching, can't
you just be social' and I'm like what's your definition of being social? Social media
is social enough, if you want to see anything social just go on social media, you'd
see different social things but what makes my page different is that I make sure not
to post a picture without passing a message across. There was this time where I
went for an interview somewhere and then I met a man who came up to me and
said hey, toyobaby, my wife is your very big fan and I'm like seriously and he said
yes, my wife said you've not posted in three (3) days and I said seriously I didn't
even know anybody followed my page like that, I'm like ohhh I've been very busy, I
spoke with her over the phone and she was talking to me about my last post, telling
me my caption, I'm like really, I didn't know people followed these things so you
know it encourages me to know that people follow me and then they read my
captions, learn from it and they're encouraged so yes its really encouraging.
CAM: What advice do you have for upcoming and aspiring
actresses?
OJ: The road is rough, clumsy especially if you're for Christ. If you're for Christ,
you'd hear lots of naysayers, no you're not an actress, no if you can't do this, you're
not an actress but then keep your head up. Like I said stay focused, don't let people
talk you down and don't give up your values for anybody in the world. I tell you
something, the reason why it's quite difficult for Christians to get into the industry
now is because the Christians who have gone ahead of us have made mistakes,
they didn't stay strong all the way, they started as Christians and at some point they
drifted so it's difficult to get into the industry as a Christian. People would tell you
the history of some Christians who have been there and then they stopped been
Christians and you'd be like how are you sure I can make it but then the scriptures
says, permit me, 'if God be for us, nobody can be against us' so know that you're
the light and God is always with you. Just stay focused, don't give up your values
for anything, don't stop representing God, you don't have to go naked, you don't
have to do some scenes you don't want to do because trust me those things have
effects, they'll not tell you what the effect is, I tell you I have my story, they will not
tell you what it is. They will just make it seem like though it all good, its just acting
acting, I get off set and I'm over it. No, it's a lie, it's a big lie so stay focused
and keep your values. Make sure to represent God and God will bring you up
himself, he'll give you the big break himself.
CAM: Thank you so much.
OJ: Thank you so much too.

LEMI GHARIOKWU

Designer of 26 Album Covers for Fela Kuti.

Lemi met Fela Kuti in 1974 through Babatunde Harrison (a journalist for
Sunday Punch). He walked into a pub and stumbled on an art work Lemi did
for the pub owner. He requested to see more and he saw one of the
illustrations Lemi did of Roforofo Fight. This spurred him to take Lemi to meet
Fela.On this first meeting, Fela was impressed with Lemi's work and offered to
pay him but he refused the money. This became his ticket into Kalakuta
Republic. Lemi's relationship with Fela Anikulapo Kuti was very cordial. He
gave Lemi total freedom with his work and thoughts to the level that he just
did as he pleased, albeit responsibly, with how and what he wanted to
express. Lemi had the rare privilege of putting his photograph and comments
on some of the covers and was treated like a son, friend, adviser and comrade
by the Afrobeat legend. Ghariokwu's approach to his work with Kuti involved
listening to and digesting the music and then expressing his reaction in his
paintings, design and comments which provide a high level of detail on the
many album covers he delivered.
