 Chapter I: The Problem and its Background

Background of the Study

Troubleshooting and repairing electronic appliances is a tough job. It requires skills that a
person cannot get in just only a month or a year. Thus, it is important to be knowledgeable enough
to know how to do it. Repairing should follow the right processes and safety procedures. Beside
of the know-how, it is also important to have knowledge on the tools that students will use to repair
appliances, because it gives great help and reduces the work time.

In Amaya School of Home Industries, every students take a course which they specialize
in about 3 years. Electronics Technology is one of the course students can take and they will
undergo certain activities to achieve learning about the course including troubleshooting domestic
appliances as one of its core competencies. It is a skill that requires long-term training and adequate
knowledge because appliances and electronic components are sensitive and malpractice of
troubleshooting can cause accidents.

To troubleshoot faulty appliances, one must think how they fix the thing in a fast, proper
and clean way. Technicians use things that helps them in doing simple tasks such as bending,
cutting, boring etc. These are called electronic tools and equipment. These tools are specialized in
certain task mentioned above and used accordingly to its specific functions. Moreover, it needs to
be familiarize on how these tools are used to prevent misuse.

Tools and equipment in ASHI are properly supplied and maintained but certain students
lack knowledge of how to use these properly, and made their troubleshooting activities more time
consuming and less safe.

Thus, learning the importance of using electronic tools and equipment is a must to address
different problems that electronic technology students of Amaya School of Home Industries is
facing and make suggestions to help them.
Theoretical Framework

Tool is any physical item that can be used to achieve a goal, especially if the item is not
consumed in the process. Tools are in every technological industry especially electronics.
Electronic tools and equipment used to repair faults in the operation of electronic devices. Tools
ease the work in repairing appliances because they help in accomplishing the task. It is essential
on all electronic technician to be familiar to it to use them correctly to avoid accidents while using
it. Also, these tools can be used in assembling circuits and other electronic works. Hence,
electronic tools and equipment is important in all aspects of electronics.

The paradigm shows the research structure. The input will be the respondents which will
be the electronics technology students of Amaya School of Home Industries. In the process stage,
formulation of research design will be the first followed by identifying the respondents of the study
then the formulation of the appropriate research instrument by the means of questionnaire. After
the respondents answered the instrument, data collection will take place and it will be analyzed. In
the output stage, the analyzed data will be finalized and conclusions and recommendations will be
formulated based on the identified importance of using tools and equipment on the Amaya School
of Home Industries.
Statement of the Problem

This study will seek to determine the importance of using electronic tools and equipment
in troubleshooting of domestic appliances. Specifically this study will answer the following
questions:

1. What are the tools and equipment that student use to troubleshoot domestic appliances?
2. Why some students use electronic tools and equipment in a different manner?
3. How electronic tools and equipment ease the work when troubleshooting domestic
appliances?
4. Is there any significant relationship between the use of electronic tools and equipment
in reducing time and effort in troubleshooting domestic appliances?

Objective of the Study

The objective of this study are:

1. To determine the tools and equipment that students use to troubleshoot domestic
appliances.
2. To determine the reason why students use electronic tools and equipment on different
manner.
3. To determine how electronic tools and equipment ease the work when troubleshooting
domestic appliances.
4. To determine any significant relationship between the use of electronic tools and
equipment in reducing time and effort in troubleshooting domestic appliances?

Hypothesis

There is no significant relationship on the use of electronic tools and equipment in

troubleshooting domestic appliances in Amaya School of Home Industries.
Significance of the Study

The results and findings of this study will be beneficial to the following:

Electronics technology students for them to have knowledge about using right
tools and equipment in troubleshooting domestic appliances.
Electronics technology teachers for them to have additional information that will
help or even improve their teaching.
Electronic technicians for them to have an advance knowledge aside from what
they got.
Future researchers for them to easily get information about the importance of
using electronic tools and equipment on troubleshooting domestic appliances

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study was conducted to determine the importance of using electronic tools and
equipment in troubleshooting appliances in the Amaya School of Home Industries as perceived by
the students during TVLE class within the school year 2016-2017. The aspects looked into are the
experiences of students, their problems, methods and strategies to propose solutions to help
improve usage of electronic tools and equipment used in troubleshooting domestic appliances.

Definition of Terms

5S (Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu and Shitsuke) is a strategy developed for workplace organization
method

Domestic appliances are home appliance used for routine housekeeping tasks such as cooking,
washing laundry, or food etc.

Measurement is the determination or estimation of ratios of quantity.

Troubleshooting is the process of identifying and fixing problems that causing certain
malfunction in domestic appliances.
 Chapter II: Review of Related Literature and Studies

Electronic tools and equipment are vital in troubleshooting electronic equipment because
they make it time efficient and cost reducing. It is a thing in every electronic technician that they
have it and they know how to use it. The lack of knowledge of using it leads to further damage the
domestic appliance that a technician troubleshooting, and accidents can happen to the part of the
appliance user.

Unger, Schenider and Salhofer (2008) indicates that the choice of an adequate tool depends
on many aspects and thus no single rule on how to choose a tool can be given. Tools has other
purposes than its dedicated use, although there are standardization of use of tools and equipment.

This poses a problem in identifying what tools can be used in a specific task in
troubleshooting domestic appliance. OSHA (2015) conducted a study about how a misused
electronic tool can cause mishaps and accidents. A technician use a chisel instead of a screwdriver
in driving screws, because the two tools mentioned above can do the same thing. This posed great
hazard because the tip of the chisel broke and fly off, hitting the user and other people. Power
tools, which are tools or equipment that needs power supply (preferably AC) to work can cause a
catastrophic accidents if misused or maintained improperly and malfunctions to the under repair
domestic appliance.

Thus, in order to have a safe working place, electronic technician must know the
importance of using electronic tools and equipment in troubleshooting domestic appliance. Sharma
(2014) reiterated that electronic tools and equipment must be used according to its specific
functions and technicians should know its importance in the field of electronics.
 Chapter III: Method of the Study

Research Design

This research focused to describe the importance of electronic tools and equipment to the
students of Amaya School of Home Industries as well to the other people concerned. The research
utilize descriptive research design to understand the way electronic tools and equipment help in
troubleshooting appliances that needs repairing.

Instruments and Techniques Used

The researcher of this study used survey questionnaire as instrument and technique in
collecting data. Survey questionnaires are used to get information to know the importance of
electronic tools and equipment in troubleshooting domestic appliances.

Sampling Procedure

The researcher used simple random sampling. The researcher draw lots to identify who
will be the respondents of the study from the students of electronics technology of Amaya School
of Home Industries.
