Discrete Math

Mrs. Herrera
2017-2018

Dear Parents,

I am very excited to have your child in Discrete Math this year! I look forward to the
exploration and learning that will go on as we explore these topics together. The following
information will help you and your child understand what is required for success in this class.
Your involvement in your childs education is essential. Please help me give your child
the opportunity to fully succeed. If you would like to meet with me please feel free to call me at
school and leave a message telling how and when you can best be reached, or send me an email.

Please keep the website address below and save as a favorite on your home or childs

Please review all of this information with your child and sign your name on the reverse side.
Thank you!

Course Description:

This discrete mathematics course by design shows a different view of mathematics than as seen
in traditional mathematics courses. It is an applications driven course that is based upon the
study of events that occur in small, or discrete, chunks. Discrete concepts are used extensively in
business, industry, government, and the digital world. The major areas of study are counting and
probability, graph theory, and the mathematics of social choice (voting and fair division).

Standards:
1) Students use counting techniques to solve problems.
2) Students use matrices to solve problems.
3) Students use recursive techniques to solve problems.
4) Students use graph theory to solve problems.
5) Students use election theory to solve problems.

Behavioral Expectations:

Study while others are sleeping; work while others are loafing;
prepare while others are playing;
and dream while others are wishing.
-William Arthur Ward

These five values will guide student and teacher behavior in the classroom:

HONESTY INTEGRITY COURTESY COMPASSION COURAGE

Homework quizzes may be given at any
