OSMEA COLLEGES: A Historical Perspective

Osmea Colleges stands as the realization of the dream of its founder, Dr. Anacleto R.
Pelio, Sr., to bring higher education within the reach of Masbateos, who could not
afford to send their children to other places for a college education.

The school was founded in June 1948, holding classes in a rented building, at the
corner of Mabini and Danao Streets in the capital town of Masbate. It was first known as
Osmea Junior College, and shortly thereafter changed to Osmea Colleges in honor of
then President Sergio Osmea, Sr. whose ideals, visions, and aspirations became the
epitome of what the school stands today.

The school initially offered education subjects leading to the Elementary Teachers
Certificate (E.T.C.) and Associate in Arts (A.A.).

In 1949, Osmea Colleges purchased an eight-hectare sprawling land where it

constructed an Administration Building, together with a Physical Education and
Basketball Court Plaza, to meet the increased enrolment of students.

In 1965, Osmea Colleges pioneered and operated the first Radio Station (DYVP) in the
province. It linked Masbate to the rest of the Philippine archipelago. It gave Masbateos
listening pleasure to music, culture and arts as well as giving them up to the minute
reports of news and events as it unfolds.

From its humble beginnings, offering courses in Teacher Education, Osmea Colleges
expanded to offer a complete basic
education (Elementary and High School) to cater to the needs of Masbates youth.

Among its tertiary course offerings to date include Liberal Arts with majors in
Broadcasting, Journalism, Mathematics, English, History, Political Science, Home
Economics; Arts and Sciences with majors in Accountancy, Business Administration,
Entrepreneurship, Criminology, Computer Education (One-Year Programming Course,
Two-Year Programming and Technology Course, Four-Year Computer Science Course;
Short courses in Computer Softwares, Business Bookkeeping, Accounting for non-
accountants.

It also offers review class for Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) and
Criminology Board Examination.

Osmea Colleges also boast of a strong Graduate School Program in Master of Arts in
Educational Management (M.A.Ed.), Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.), Master in
Public Administration (M.P.A.), Master in Business Administration (M.B.A.), and a Post
Graduate Program in Doctor of Education (Ed.D.).

It is the first educational institution in the Province of Masbate that offered computer
science courses and access to internet for its students and faculty. Internet use is
likewise integrated in all courses offered in Osmea Colleges. Aside from its computer
laboratory, it has an Internet research center & wifi-zone available to its faculty and
students.

Since 1948, the college has continued to expand and develop its facilities to keep up
with the latest educational and technological advancement within the reach of the
Masbateos.

Osmea Colleges also operates RN 107.1 FM Station as part of its laboratory for
communication arts students.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I never did anything alone. Whatever was accomplished in this country was
accomplished collectively.
- Golda Meir

First of all It would be very un-fear If I start to post my final works by only giving
credit to myself and without mentioning all the persons that help me to developed,
correct, polish and improve on my work.
To start with I would like to thanks to all my classmates whom together we made
the elaboration of many peer reviews to help each other on different aspects such as
grammar, topic sentence, and many other things that we discuss in class. To my group:
Ana Jean, Sunshine and Erika; I have no words to thank them for the magnificent
mutual respect that we show to each other on the different meeting that we had. With
the combination of the four of us, we made possible the elaboration of a high quality
project, we learn to work together, to not only hear others ideas but to also accept them,
and specially to understand each other strengths in order to distribute the amount of
work in a efficient way. To Rose Ann and Katrina, my peers, especially from them I learn
a lot regarding grammar mistakes. Since Rose Ann is an excellent writer, he helped me
to understand how to localize when there is a sentence transition missing and the
connection that I had to develop between one paragraph and another.
To my college writing professor JESLENE LUPAGUE I had no words no thank
him for the amazing work he did with my classmates and me. From hard lectures,
readings, grammar, punctuation, to his personal experiences; all this journey in order to
achieve the goal of being better writers. The patience, dedication and way of teaching
and speaking that he had with each one of us is something to admire. I wanted to thank
him specially for always being so able ask any type of question, and always for sending
his feedback and comments on EACH WORD AND LINE of our drafts. Professor: You
make me understand something very important for life that I will never forget: I should
never be afraid of expressing out loud my opinion, since is mine and it could never be
wrong. Each of us has a different way of thinking and seeing the world, and as long as
we support with good and valid argument our points of views, well do fine!
Last but not least I cannot stop mentioning the writing center. I really appreciate
the help that the writing center was able to give me when I need it. They not only
revised me my essays and help me to correct my grammar mistakes, but besides that
they also teach me amazing lessons and tricks that would serve me a lot in my
professional future.

I would like to finish my acknowledgement with a significant phrase that Helen Keller
once said:

Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.

II. PRAYER OF THE PRE-SERVICE TEACHER

Help me to be a fine teacher, to keep peace in the classroom, peace between my

students and myself, to be kind and gentle to each and every one of my students.

Help me to be merciful to my students, to balance mercy and

discipline in the right measure for each student, to give genuine praise a s much as

possible, to give constructive criticism in a manner that is palatable to my students.

Help me remain conscientious enough to keep my lessons I am a teacher. always

interesting, to recognize what motivates each of my students, to accept my students

limitations and not hold it against them. I accept the challenge to be sagacious Help

me not to judge my students too harshly, to be fair to all, to be a good role model,

but most of all Lord, help me to show and tenacious in teaching every student your

love to all of my students. Amen, because I believe every child can learn.

4A
III. TEACHERS CREED

I believe that teaching is not a profession but a vocation, demanding dedication and a
deep sense of commitment. I believe that I am a co-worker with God, in the divine task
of molding and forming the young and growing minds and hearts entrusted to my care. I
believe that just as a lamp diffuses light, dispelling the surrounding darkness, so I too,
as a teacher, have to diffuse understanding, knowledge and love to my students
dispelling the darkness of ignorance and doubt. I believe that as a teacher molding
children for the 21st century, I must dare to be different in my methodology and
approach, challenging their intelligence, stimulating their curiosity, exciting their
imagination, and inculcating in them sound values. I believe that every child is special
and must be treated as such. I believe that I must honor and respect the implicit pleas
of every child to me, his teacher, to become what he can be. I believe that I must not
differentiate between my students, and that I must not show any personal preferences
or dislikes. I believe that I must not let my own problems, frustrations and anxieties color
and affect my work and my attitude towards my students. I believe that I am the decisive
element in the classroom. It is my personal approach that creates the climate. It is my
daily mood that makes the weather. I believe that as a teacher I possess a tremendous
power to make a childs life miserable or joyful. I can humiliate,\ humor, hurt or heal, I
believe that and in all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be
escalated, and a child humanized or dehumanized. I believe that I must be courteous,
humane and kind in all my dealings with my colleagues and my students. I believe that
I must cooperate with the management and the authorities, respecting their decisions
and rules, yet never hesitating to express my own point of view. I believe that I may
agree to disagree with the management, but always doing so with frankness and
sincerity instead of indulging in backbiting and destructive criticism. . I believe that
although teaching may not hold out the promise of increasing monetary gain to the
same extent as other profession, its greatest reward is in the appreciation and affection
of my students and the good I do to them. I believe that having willingly chosen to be a
teacher, I must also be willing to respond sincerely with the effort, dedication and zeal,
that teaching demands and deserves.

IV. PERSONAL REFLECTIN IN HE FIELD STUDY EXPERIENCES

Learning they say is hard so as to teaching. To learn, one must get to know the
different things, from simple ideas to more complex. Also, in teaching, many things are
to be learned not only by the students but also to the part of the teacher.

In order a teacher to learn, he must be effective and well versed to the different
methods or strategies he will use to make his teaching more innovative. Effective
teaching is said to be achieved if a student has learned something from what the
teacher taught. In these field studies, I have found out that real teaching can be seen
when you are in the location where the teaching and learning takes place. I believe that
a teacher can be developed if he sees the reality of teaching. And that's what I've
experienced during my Field Study journey. I believe that everyone is unique in their
own ways. People have different personalities. Thus, they too have different abilities. As
for me, students are more likely a group of people who in one hand have different
capabilities. With their differences, I as a teacher must adjust to them for I believe that
when a teacher understands his/ her students and accepts the differences they have,
the teaching and learning will be achieved in its easiest ways with harmony.

This is actually true in the teaching field. It is a fact that when a teacher first
understands his learners, the learning is achieved with harmony. The teaching and
learning process should always be based on the learners' interest. Teachers must give
appropriate lessons that fit to the capabilities and likes of his learners. If in some
instances where students have difficulties in learning for they have learning disabilities
like dyslexia, the role of the teacher is to first change his strategies in teaching and
make sure that he will give the special attention they needed.
The world of teaching doesn't only end at at school. It doesn't only end when the school
year ends or when the teacher finishers the chapters he taught from the book to his
students. It also doesn't end when your pen's ink becomes empty. To learn is to to learn
around. Therefore, learning is everywhere and everywhere we learn different things
from the simplest to more complex of learning.

Simultaneously, as the learning takes place, of course we also have to remember that
everything that we learn from the past to the present, these things are such valuable for
these teach us how to become new and productive individuals. We are inspired of the
lessons we took and definitely, these will last forever in n our memory.

And for us we should always remember that we must be able to influence the minds
of many to become good and that we should be careful in touching the lives of people
we once be part with.

VI. PERSONAL REFLECTION IN THE PRE SERVICE TRAINING

After the semesters Ive spent studying this topic, I have learned a great deal. My
experiences have convinced me of the importance of reflection for pre - service
teachers. When students produce meaningful reflections, at that moment they make a
connection between theory and practice that I cant make for them. Once that
connection is made, they finally take ownership of the course content, and I know it will
serve them long after they leave my classroom.

As a result of this. I will, first of all, continue to use visual records to inspire
reflection in my students. Although the data pointed to the usefulness of video, the final
comments of the students provided the evidence that convinced me. Their vote for
visual records of their performance was overwhelming and I will continue to provide
them for future classes. Second, I will provide peer observers for each teacher (as class
size permits). There are benefits for both the teacher and the observerthe teacher
receives an alternate perspective of their teaching, and the observer connects theory to
practice in a live context. Finally, I will continue to hold my comments until the end of the
lab. This helped to keep the pace of the lab brisk, and it compelled the students to tune
into all of my feedback instead of tuning out while I critiqued an individual performance.

In the future, I may redesign the reflective prompts, providing more structure and
guidance to help the students as they respond. The prompts for this project were
purposefully vague because I wanted to see how students would respond without limits
or standards. Ive learned that for some students reflection must be taught. Therefore, I
may implement a reflective model that requests a description, justification, and critique
of meaningful class events. With new reflective prompts, I am obliged to create a new
rubric so I can collect data as the students reflective skills develop. Reflection is the
focus of one of ten Initial Physical Education Standards from the National Association
for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) and the National Council for the
Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Since the importance of reflection is
recognized nationally, I hope to infuse reflection in all of our programs field experiences
and encourage other teacher education faculty to emphasize reflection in their
professional courses.

- What is our lesson yesterday? One student raises hand
- Our lesson yesterday is
about integers.
- Very good, does anyone can define what - Integer is a set of whole
integer is? number and its opposite.

- Is zero an integer? - Yes it is an integer

- Can you give an example of integers? - All students will give an

example of integers.

- Ok now you what is integers we will have a

game, everyone will participate.

- Everyone will be given a question about

integers. Example: write an integer that will
represent each situation

10 degree above zero.

SEMI DETAILED LESSON PLAN

I. Objective:
At the end of the sixty minute period, 85% of the students should be able to:
1. Define terms related to coordinate system and find solutions on linear equation.
2. Relate linear equation in daily living in terms of problem solving.
3. Solve and graph linear equations.
II. Subject Matter:
Solving Linear Equations in Two Variables
III. Procedure
A. Motivation

Have you ever liked two things so much that you wanted to combine them to make

one amazing thing? (Listen to student comments.)

For example, think about peanuts and chocolate chips. Combined together, they can

make peanut butter cookies with chocolate chips on top!

Coffee and sugar is also the most common combination that we can observed

One interesting combination has to do with a French man who really liked math back

in the 1600s. His name was Rene Descartes, and he liked both algebra and geometry,

but back then people did not think those two topics were very much related. Decartes

started looking for ways to combine them so that they could be used together for

important applications. He came up with this neat way of taking numbers that belong

in the realm of algebra and plotting them visually onto a geometric coordinate plane to

show how they are related. This coordinate plane became known as the "Cartesian

plane," named after him. Several parts of the coordinate plane are important to

understand before we can learn how to use it. In today's lesson, you will learn about it

and how it is used.

B. Lesson Proper
1. Rene Decartes introduce the use of the Cartesian Coordinate plane that involves

the construction of two perpendicular number lines, one horizontal and vertical,

whose point of intersection called the origin.

a) A vertical line is named y-axis and the Horizontal line is the x-axis.
b) The two axes divide the plane into four quadrants that are numbered counter-

clockwise direction. (I, II, III, IV)

c) Every point in the plane can be described in terms of an ordered pair (x, y) or

(abscissa, ordinate).
d) Under the first quadrant the value of X is positive as well as the value of Y.
Under the second quadrant the value of X is negative while the value of Y is

positive.
Under the third quadrant both values of X and Y are negative.
Under the fourth quadrant the value of X is positive while the value of Y is

negative.
2. So now class, lets try to plot these points in the Cartesian Coordinate Plane for

us to see on what quadrant they belong.

a. (7, 6) b. (2, 5) c. (-5,-1) d. (4, -6)

3. After knowing the Rectangular Coordinate Plane, we can now further discuss

about Linear Equations in Two Variables. To start with:

Let us study this equation: y=5 x +3 . Now let us now compute for the following:

Find y when x=0

Find y when x=3
Find y when x=3
1
Find y when x=
5
4. A linear equation in two variables is an equation that can be written in the

standard form
Ax + By=C , where A, B, and C are real numbers and A and B are not both

zero.
Example: 4 x =9+2 y
The first thing to do is to write the equation in standard form: a
4 x 2 y =9 . The equation is now written in the form Ax + By=C , thus
A=4 , B=2C=9.
5. To find a solution to any linear equation in two variables, select a particular value

for x and substitute it for x in the equation, then solve the resulting

equation for y . It is also possible to the first select a value for y and

substitute it for y in the equation and then solve the resulting equation for x

Lets now try to solve for the value of y using the equation: 3 x y +1=0 .
Using the values of x we can now solve y .

x 0 1 2 1 3
y
6. After knowing how to get the value of the x and y , next to which is the

graphing of the solution of the equation. The graphing of an equation involving

two variables, x and y , is the collection of all points ( x , y that are

solutions of the equation.

7. To graph Linear Equation:
a. Find at least two solutions of the equation.
b. Plot the solutions of the equation.
c. Connect the points to form a straight line.

Example: x+ y=3

Find the value of the x and the y by using the x y intercepts.

If x=0 , y=3

If y=0 , x=3

The Coordinates are: ( 0,3 (3,0)

d. After getting (x , y ) coordinate, we will now plot these coordinates in the

Cartesian plane. And after plotting we will now connect the two points by a

straight line. All the points touching the line are solutions of the equation

x+ y=3 .
8. Another example: 4 x +2 y=8
Same procedure will be applied.
The computation of the x y intercepts :
If x=0, y= ?
4 x +2 y=8
4 (0)+2 y=8
2 y=8
y=4
(0,4)
If y=0, x= ?
4 x +2( 0)=8
4 x =8
x=2
(2,0)

Then plot these points and connect them using a straight line.

9. Worded Problem related to Linear Equation:

Dessa had already walked 5 kms. And continue walking 3 kms per hour. Write the

equation that shows the relation between the distance and the time. After 10 hours, how

far does Dessa walked?

Solution:

Let:

x be the time (hours)

y be the distance (km.)

y=3 x +5

y=3 ( 10 ) +5

y=35 km

IV. EVALUATION:

In a one whole graphing paper, graph the following:

1. 2.
a) (2,6) a) 2 x +3 y=6
b) (-2,6) b) x + y=4
c) (2,-6) c) 5 y10 x20=0
d) (-2,-6) d) 3 x4 y=12

V. ASSIGNMENT:
In a sheet of yellow paper, answer the following:
1. What is quadratic equation?
2. Give some examples of quadratic equations.
3. Illustrate how a graph of a quadratic equation looks like.
4. What is parabola
PERSONAL CAREER PLAN

Before I was enrolled to this crash course known as the Teacher Certificate for Non
Education Professionals, I asked myself: Why be a teacher? Why not a nurse or engineer?
Honestly speaking, my mind was uncertain to answer such question even after I finished
studying all the professional subjects offered in the first semester. However, such question
just became certainly answerable after I experienced the off-campus observation teaching
in my chosen school none other than the Espinosa Elementary School.

I really had a very memorable and worthwhile experience in my cooperating school

that opened my mind and heart to embrace teaching profession as my lifetime career after
graduation. With pride and honor, I promise that I will pursue a teaching career after
graduation. I want to see myself getting old being in this profession. I want to become
a MODERN TEACHER (Modern, Obedient, Dedicated, Economical, Resourceful, Noble
Talented, Efficient, Active, Creative, Honest, Effective and Research-oriented.) With all of
these characteristics, I can surely become responsive to the changing needs that await me
in the field of work after graduation.

Moreover, after graduation I have set my mind to accept only the teaching related
opportunities as possible with open arms so that the enthusiasm in me to teach will keep
on burning and the teacher in me will be kept alive. Also, I want to pass the board
examination and enroll myself in the graduate school to take up a Masters Degree in
Education major in Mathematics still in my alma mater in college.

There are also several plans that I want to achieve after graduation that I never
mentioned herein but those are subjects for a case to case basis. Meaning to say, I cannot
proceed to my succeeding plan without accomplishing the previous ones. Therefore, I
need to follow a step by step process in achieving my plans since a journey towards a
thousand miles begins with a single step.

IX. SYNOPSIS OF PROFESINAL READINGS

. In particular, teaching reading is one of the major priorities of schools - literacy is the
basis of learning for a student for the rest of his or her time in school, and success cannot
be had unless the student was able to develop sufficient reading skills. This is why teacher
professional development for teaching reading is so important in our current education
system.

Studies have shown that the best way for schools to improve student achievement (via
some sort of monetary purchase) is by spending more money on getting the most qualified
teachers. One of the best ways to improve the quality of educators is to offer them the
resources they need to improve their own skills - specifically skills in teaching reading.
Teacher professional development can improve teacher skills, which in turn improves the
quality of lessons for students. Lesson quality is improved more from improved teaching
than it is from other variables such as the materials used or the book /curriculum being
followed. Therefore a valuable investment for any school is in teacher professional
development.

Some methods and skills that teacher professional development should cover include:
how to interact with students in a collaborative manner, how to bring outside experiences
into the classroom to enhance learning, how to promote learning outside the classroom,
how to motivate students towards educating themselves and exploring new things on their
own, how to show that teachers care for their students and really do want to help them
learn, how to recognize and develop a student's strengths, and more.

In teaching reading especially, it is important for a teacher to be able to recognize what a

student is struggling with and how to help the student improve. Because literacy is such a
valuable skill in our society, teachers absolutely must develop skills to promote reading
both in the classroom as well as in a student's daily life outside of school. Learning to
teach in a way that makes learning fun is crucial when it comes to teacher professional
development. While being knowledgeable about a subject (chemistry for chemistry
teachers, math for math teachers, etc...) is important, it is also important to take it to the
next level and be able to understand different methodologies for teaching, to be aware of
topics that often cause trouble for students, and then to have plans for how to deal with the
problem areas and make sure that all students are learning to the best of their abilities.

In summary, teacher professional development is a valuable investment for school

districts. Since the quality of teachers is the one things that has the most impact on a
student's success, helping teachers become the best that they can be is the most logical
way for school districts to achieve high student accomplishment. For example, a teacher's
strategies for teaching reading can be improved via teacher professional development. By
using these strategies in the classroom, a teacher can motivate his or her students
towards success.
I. STATEMNET OF PURPOSE OF THE PORTFOLIO
