EXPT: Thermometric Titration Data Analysis Exercise

AIM: To determine the concentration of a solution of sodium hydroxide using the

results obtained by titrating against a solution of 1.2 M hydrochloric acid.

MAT/APP List as appropriate from procedure given.

PROCEDURE:
The temperature of the hydrochloric acid was taken, and a clean burette was then filled to the
zero mark. The thermometer was rinsed and dried.
Using the measuring cylinder, 25 ml of sodium hydroxide was measured and poured into the
styrofoam cup, and its temperature was measured and recorded.
The titration was carried out by quickly adding a 5 ml portion of the acid to the sodium hydroxide
while stirring and simultaneously reading the temperature of the mixture. Without losing any time,
this was repeated until 40 ml of acid has been added.

RESULTS:
Table of Results of Thermometric Titration of 1.2M HCl against NaOH

Vol. of acid used / ml 0 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40

Temperature / oC 29 32 33.5 36.5 40 35 33 29 29

Plot a graph of Temperature vs. Volume of acid added using a full sheet of graph paper, choosing a
scale which spreads points over the majority of the paper.[Hint: Let the temperature scale start at
20 rather than 0].
Choose the points of best fit, and draw a straight line through the points which are increasing, and
another through those that are decreasing. [Hint; be sure to include on your line of best fit, the
point which may be considered to be the most reliable.]

CALCULATIONS & DISCUSSION:

Explain the shape of your graph., and indicate the neutralization point on your graph
Identify the volume of acid needed for complete neutralization of the 25 ml of alkali.
Calculate the number of moles present in that volume of acid.
Write the equation for the reaction which took place.
From the equation deduce the number of moles of sodium hydroxide which must have
been present in the 25ml of alkali used.
Hence calculate the Molarity of the sodium hydroxide.
Identify and discuss the three precautions taken to minimize error in this procedure.
Calculate the Heat change for the reaction, and the Heat of Neutralization i.e. heat change
when 1 mole of acid reacts with 1 mole of alkali.

CONCLUSION: Write as appropriate to aim stated.

P.S. Make sure that your graph is stuck into your lab book securely, and is given a title which
identifies it clearly, as opposed to one which is stating the obvious like Graph showing
Temperature against Volume of acid used!!
