Country Project

Tenth Grade World History

This semester all students will do a major project on a country. The project will consist of a short
research paper and other information presented in a format that will be discussed below. In November
2017, a booklet will be turned in and a presentation of information will be made. All resources are
available in the school library and at various web sites, which will be made available to the students.
I. RESEARCH PAPER

The research paper for this project will be done as part of your requirements. Your paper will cover the
geography of your country. The following topics should be included:
A. Boundaries (political and physical)
B. Location
C. Physical features (mountains, lakes, rivers etc.)
D. Climate

Please remember to save the research paper so that you will have it to put into your booklet.
Research paper must be 3-4 pages double spaced, Times New Roman (12pt font), with 1 Margins. Must
use MLA Citation style within document and in bilbiography.
II. PRESENTATION OF INFORMATION

The research paper covers only one major aspect of your country. In addition information will be
presented on the following topics using the listed method. You will receive instruction on each topic
before you begin working on it.
A. History Create a timeline
B. Government- Create a Chart
C. Agriculture and Industry- Create a picture collage
D. Religion- Create PowerPoint presentation
E. Customs and Culture - Create a brochure (traditional dress, language, food, festivals and
holidays.
F. Two written reports on topics that you choose, not covered by the above work. (Each report
should be 2 pages, Double-spaced, 12 pt font, Times New Roman, 1 Margins).

A calendar is included in these instructions for when each item should be completed. I will check on
those dates to make sure you are keeping up. The item will not receive its grade until turned in as part of
your booklet.
III. BOOKLET

You will prepare a booklet on your country that will include your research paper, your timeline, chart,
collage, brochure, and reports of choice. It will also include maps, graphs, and any other material that
you may collect about your country and wish to include.
A. Research Paper- This should be the first item in your booklet after the table of
contents. You should turn in the graded copy from your language arts
teacher.
B. Timeline, collage, chart, brochure and reports of choice may be put in any order you wish.
C. Maps - All maps should be hand drawn. You should trace the borders of your country and put
all information on the map by hand. You may print out outline maps if you can locate those.
1. Political Map- Shows the capital, major cities, and bordering countries.
2. Physical Map- Shows the elevation of the land and physical features.
3. Land Use Map- Shows how the land is used. (agriculture, industry recreation etc.)
4. Map of Choice- You choose a map to draw. Some examples include climate, vegetation,
religion, road map.

D. Pictures - Picture pages should be created. I want to see a good sampling of pictures so that I
get an idea of what your country looks like. These pictures may come from travel magazines,
internet sites , travel agencies, tourist bureaus.
E. Graphs At least two graphs should be created by you. You may do these by hand or create
them on the computer. You may not use graphs that are already done and just copied. Graphs
may show information on population, manufacturing, agriculture, tourism, etc.
F. OTHER MATERIALS - After doing all of the required items, make your booklet a scrap book.
Put any materials, brochures, stamps, news articles, etc that you may find on your country.

IV. BOOKLET ORGANIZATION

Your booklet may be decorated and put together however you like after meeting the following
guidelines:
1. Title page
2. Blank page
3. Table of Contents
4. Blank Page
5. Research paper
6. All other items in your chosen order

V. PRESENTATION

In November, you will make a presentation to the class about your country. This will be an oral
presentation in any format you would like to present in.
1. Use note cards for your presentation. You have ten minutes to present.
2. You may set up an exhibit of items from your country.
3. Your Power Point presentation will be your visual aid.
4. If they are available, you may show slides. You must know what they are pictures of.
5. You may share food native to your country. This must be easy to distribute and easy to eat.
Please avoid messy foods or foods that need to be heated. Lets stick to candy, cookies, breads
etc.
6. No guests are allowed.

Free Choice Section You must choose 2 topics from this section to research and include
information about in your report, each free choice section is worth 35 points:

Famous Person - Someone that is well known that either lived/lives in that country or is from
that country originally. Why are they famous, whats so great about them?
Current Event - Find an article of a current even that is happening in your country. Your article
should be as current as possible. The article must be attached to your board. You will write a
summary about your article, think who?, what?, where?, when? why? And how? to help you
write a complete summary of your current event.
Animal Information on an animal that is either native to your country or one your country is
well known for.
Historical Event An important event that helped shape your countrys history, possibly one that
they celebrate or honor.
Tourist Hot Spot Choose a place / landmark, not previously mentioned in your report and give
a deeper look at this particular location and why it would be an important place in this country.
Family life Information on daily life in the country you have chosen, housing, jobs, money etc.
School what is the school day like? Homework? Classroom? Describe what it would be like to
be a student in your country.
Natural Events Major natural disasters that frequently affect your country (ie: earthquakes,
tornadoes etc).
Government - Form of Government (Do they have a President, King, Prime Minster etc.),
Imports/Exports (What does your country grow or make that they sell to other places?) What are
some things it imports? (needs to bring in to their country) Main Industry (What is your country
known for, what brings in the most money to your country?) Natural Resources (What natural
resources can be found in your country)
Quality of Work ____/30 points
Neatness of overall project
Spelling and grammar
Pictures and visuals in each section help the viewer get to know your country and aid in your
overall presentation.
Overall effort time in class was used wisely and efficiently (judged by teacher observation
throughout project)

Bibliography ____ /10 points


All sources are cited correctly
Has at least 3 sources and at least one of those is a grade level appropriate book
