“BRIDGES”
Well!! I've got my bridge finished well ahead of schedule and have
crossed to the other side several times without significant
incident. Of course I used a lot of quality control and tested the
strength of the bridge on numerous occasions, but best of all the
missus never even caught on as to why I insisted she jump up and
down in the middle. You see, I had spent a lot of time doing very
sophisticated calculations in order to figure out the size and
number of logs needed. But this bridge was considerably longer
than a previous one I had built and my newer tractor was quite a
bit heavier due to the loader and the cab. After weeks of figuring
what the actual weight of the tractor might be and what the
strength of a 10" log sitting beside a 9" log might be, it finally
dawned on me that I was just totally guessing. Oh Honey!!!
Before the completion of the bridge, however, I did need to go
out on it several times in order to prepare the landing on the
other side. This went quite well until I nearly dropped a front
wheel right through as a couple of logs decided to separate.
Easing forward, I successfully got off the bridge but on the wrong
side. So I had to pause for a few minutes and ponder this little
dilemma.
One of the great advantages of having a tractor with a cab and
various holders for carrying stuff, is that I happened to be
reasonably equipped to deal with almost any emergency.
Hanging off one of my outside brackets was an old "come along".
With the tractor out of the way I was able to run the cable all the
way around the offending logs and crank them tightly so that
when I backed up over them again they were secure. Yeah!!!
Now that the bridge is fully open for business, my first priority is
to try and sell it. My thought is that after 20 years or so, the
bridge might require maintenance and I don't want to get stuck
with the bill for the millions that it might cost if I can't do it
myself. I figure the tourism potential of the millions waiting to
tour the backwoods of Nauwigewauk would make this a real steal
for any government willing to invest $40 million or so. Failing to
come up with a dumb ... er ... interested buyer I may turn it into a
toll bridge. At an average fee of $10 per crossing I can recoup my
investment in about 50,000 years or so.
Please support my bridge!! If the missus ever discovers my
reason for her jumping up and down ... I am going to need the
funds to build a bridge to someplace far, far away. 800

The night before my amputation, my former basketball coach brought me a magazine with an article on
an amputee who ran in the New York Marathon. It was then I decided to meet this new challenge head on
and not only overcome my disability, but conquer it in such a way that I could never look back and say it
disabled me.
But I soon realized that that would only be half my quest, for as I went through the 16 months of the
physically and emotionally draining ordeal of chemotherapy, I was rudely awakened by the feelings that
surrounded and coursed through the cancer clinic. There were faces with the brave smiles, and the ones
who had given up smiling. There were feelings of hopeful denial, and the feelings of despair. My quest
would not be a selfish one. I could not leave knowing these faces and feelings would still exist, even
though I would be set free from mine. Somewhere the hurting must stop... and I was determined to take
myself to the limit for this cause.
From the beginning the going was extremely difficult, and I was facing chronic ailments foreign to
runners with two legs in addition to the common physical strains felt by all dedicated athletes.
But these problems are now behind me, as I have either out-persisted or learned to deal with them. I feel
strong not only physically, but more important, emotionally. Soon I will be adding one full mile a week,
and coupled with weight training I have been doing, by next April I will be ready to achieve something
that for me was once only a distant dream reserved for the world of miracles – to run across Canada to
raise money for the fight against cancer.
The running I can do, even if I have to crawl every last mile.
We need your help. The people in cancer clinics all over the world need people who believe in miracles.
I am not a dreamer, and I am not saying that this will initiate any kind of definitive answer or cure to
cancer. But I believe in miracles. I have to.
