Name of the work :- Providing BT to the Road from Yetigairammapeta to Arla via B.B Patnam , Ratnampeta
and Panasalapadu
Design.
1) Wheel (Design ) Load from para 2.1, taken as per SP 62 : : 51.00KN i.e 51000N
2004
6) K Value from table 3.to a CBR Value of 4.00 : 35.00 x10^-3 N/sqmm/mm.
(Page 4, of SP62:2004 )
Trial 1
673.31 mm
From The Graph Edge load Stress (Fig 2 of SP62:2004) = 4.00 Mpa
FOR L / l = 5.569
= 0.834
From The Graph Edge Temperature Stress (Fig 1, page 9 of SP62:2004) = 2.15 Mpa
c) Total Stress
Total Stress = Edge Load Stress + Edge Temperature Stress
= 6.15 Mpa
This value is greater than the allowable flexural strength 4.6 Mpa
Trial 2
Let Thickness of road be h : 200 mm
l = radius of relative Stiffness = 4 Sqrt {(E * h^3) / (12*(1 - ^2 )*K) }
835.44 mm
From The Graph Edge load Stress (Fig 2 of SP62:2004) = 2.75 Mpa
FOR L / l = 4.489
= 0.577
From The Graph Edge Temperature Stress (Fig 1, page 9 of SP62:2004) = 1.50 Mpa
c) Total Stress
Total Stress = Edge Load Stress + Edge Temperature Stress
= 4.25 Mpa
This value is less than the allowable flexural strength 4.6 Mpa
From The Graph Corner Load Stress (Fig 3 of SP62:2004) = 3.00 Mpa
This value is less than the allowable flexural strength 4.6 Mpa
DESIGN OF JOINTS
Spacing of Contraction Joint (Lc) :
Lc = 4.76 m
IRC specifies maximum spacing of 4.50m the design value is 3.75m (<4.50m).
Le=
100 c (t 2 t 1 )
Le = 57.80 m
At expansion joint (of joint width 20mm), dowel bars of 25mm diameter, 500mm long shall be placed at a spacing of
250mm center to center. The first dowel bar is placed at a distence of 150mm from the free edge of pavement.
At the expansion joint dowel bars with metal caps partially filled with cotton are used. Half the length of dowel bar near
the metal cap is lubricated to ease movement of the slab due to temparature variation.
The contraction joints are provided as dummy joints with saw cuts to a depth of 1/3rd or 1/4th thickness of the slab
from the top. The load transfer at the joints is provided through the physical interlocking by the aggregates projecting out at
the joint faces.
The gap between the joint faces should be filled with filler and at the top, elastomeric material should be used as a
joint sealant to prevent ingress of rain water and grit.
