LIS 2633 Technology in the Lives of Children and Youth, Fall 2016

Assignment 2 Guidelines: Crafting a Library Technology Policy

Due: November 2, 2016, at 11:59 PM

Worth: 20% of final grade
Format: 15 to 20-minute voiced presentation, peer feedback form for group members
Prompt: For the second assignment, you will draw on what you learned about library technology policies
in the first assignment, as well as topics of interest we cover in the course, to craft your own technology
policy for a hypothetical institution. Your group will have to agree on what kind of institution it could
be for a school, a public library, a museum, etc. Youll also have to figure out what kind of focus/mission
you want the policy to have.

After you decide on the structure/contents of your policy, youll deliver a voiced Powerpoint
presentation that will be shared with the entire class. The presentation should include (but isnt limited
to):

A mission statement for the goals your technology policy means to accomplish is the policy
punitive with an emphasis on controlling the library environment? Is it as limited as possible to
maximize access to information? Or is it somewhere in between? Is it meant to be used in one
particular area of a library (e.g., for children) or more generally?
The type of institution in which you imagine it could be implemented, and its intended audience
The structure of the policy and how you would plan to deliver it (on a website? A printed
handout? A poster? All three?)
The actual contents of the policy, & the reasons you included what you did
References to other institutions or standards for policies (such as ALAs)

While all group members arent required to participate in the voiceover for the PowerPoint, you are
required to contribute an equal amount of work. Privately, everyone will submit a peer evaluation form
so I can understand how labor was allocated for the presentation and grade fairly.

Grading Criteria:

Clearly states goals/topics of the technology policy

Demonstrates thoughtful engagement with course topics and materials
Each topic covered in the policy is there for a reason and should have an explanation for
inclusion
Peer feedback is weighed heavily in individual grades, so communication and collaboration are
important
Cites any references to other policies, course materials, or outside references used in creating
your policy (no outside references required)
