Chapter 12s glossary

Differential amplifier The input stage of the op-amp. It provides amplification of the difference voltage
between the two inputs. There are 2 modes: differential mode and common mode
Differential mode Either one signal is applied to an input and ground to the other input (single-ended)
or two opposite polarity signals are applied to two inputs (double-ended)
Common mode When equal in-phase voltages are applied to both input terminals, they tend to
cancel, Vout=0
CMRR The ratio of open-loop gain Aol to common-mode gain Acm using to measure the
(common-mode op-amp's ability to reject common-mode inputs. CMRR is often expressed in
rejection ratio) decibels dB
Open-loop voltage gain The voltage gain of an op-amp without external feed back
Decibels dB A logarithmic unit used to express the ratio of two values of a physical quantity,
often power or intensity
Maximum output Increase directly with load resistance
voltage swing Vop-p
Input offset voltage, Vos The differential dc voltage required between two inputs to force the output to zero
volts
Input bias current The dc current required by the inputs of the amplifier to properly operate the first
stage
Input offset current Ios The difference of the input bias current
Slew rate The rate in volts per microsecond at which the output voltage of an op-amp can
change in repsonse to a step input
Frequency response An op-amp has no internal coupling capacitors, therefore the low-frequency
response extends down to dc (0Hz)
"Pink noise" At low frequencies, noise is inversely proportional to the frequency, 1/f
"White nosie" Above a critical noise frequency, the noise becomes flat and is spread out equally
across the frequency spectrum
Negative feedback The process of returning a portion of the output signal to the input of an amplifier
such that it is out of phase with the input signal
Closed-loop voltage The voltage gain of an op-amp with external feed back
gain
Noninverting amplifier An op-amp closed-loop configuration in which the input signal is applied to the
noninverting input. It has a higher input impedance and a lower output impedance
the the op-amp itself
Voltage follower A closed-loop, noninverting op-amp with a voltage gain of 1
Inverting amplifier An op-amp closed-loop configuration in which the input signal is applied to the
inverting input. It has an input impedance approximately equal to the input resistor
and an output impedance approximately equal to the output impedance of the op-
amp itself
Gain-bandwidth A constant parameter which is always equal to the frequency at which the op-
product amp's open-loop gain is unity
