1.0 Hasil Pembelajaran/ Learning Outcomes

Di akhir kursus, pelajar mampu:


At the end of the course, students will be able to:

i. Mendapat pengetahuan dan kefahaman kerelevan isu-isu semasa di dalam bidang sosiolinguistik
bagi masyarakat makjmuk Malaysia.
Gain knowledge of and understand the relevance of the current issues in the field of macro-
sociolinguistics for Malaysias multi-ethnic society.

ii. Menilai dan menerang dasar bahasa Malaysia (penumpuan kepada Bahasa Melayu dengan
Bahasa Inggeris) hingga kini serta impaknya keatas masyarakat dan kerajaan.

Examine and be able to explain Malaysias language policy journey (with a focus on Bahasa
Melayu and English) till present times and how they impact on the concerns of society and the
government.

iii. Menlai dan menerang kebangkitan sedunia kelestarian dan pengekalan linguistik dan identiti
budaya minoriti komuniti etnik.
Examine and explain the worldwide revival of the sustenance and maintenance of linguistic and
cultural identities of minority ethnic communities.
iv. Memahami dan menerang pembangunan berbagai jenis Bahasa Inggeris dengan isu piawai.
Comprehend and explain the development of sub-varieties of Malaysian English and the issue of
standard.

v. Menganalisa dan memberi sebab penukaran dasar aliran bahasa terkini ke Bahasa Inggeris untuk
matapelajaran Sains dan Matematik dan tindakbalas berbagai pihak terhadap perubahan ini.
Analyse and communicate the reasons for the recent change in medium of instruction policy to
English for science and mathematics and the responses of varying stakeholders towards this
change.

vi. Membanding isu-isu semasa bahasa di Malaysia dengan negara-negara berbagai etnik yang lain.
Compare and contrast the current language issues in Malaysia with that of other multi-ethnic
nations.

2.0 Sinopsis/ Synopsis

Objektif kursus ini adalah untuk mempertingkatkan kefahaman dikalangan komuniti pelbagai etnik di
Malaysia melalui isu bahasa tekini dalam bidang sosiolinguistik makro. Isu yang akan dibincangkan meliputi
peranan bahasa dalam pembentukan negara bangsa, sebab perubahan polisi dalam bahasa perantaraan,
respons kepada perubahan dalam pembelajaran bahasa, kelestarian identiti linguistik dan budaya komuniti
pelbagai etnik dan perkembangan Bahasa Inggeris dan isu piawai. Isu ini memberi impak terhadap pelajar
dan guru, masyarakat dan kerajaan. Persoalan tersebut akan dibincangkan dalam konteks Malaysia serta
perbandingan dengan pengalaman masyarakat negara luar yang mempunyai pelbagai etnik.

The objective of this course is to promote understanding amongst the multi-ethnic communities in Malaysia
through knowledge of the current language issues in the field of macro-sociolinguistics. The issues that will
be covered are the role of language in nation building, the reasons for the changes in medium of instruction
policy; responses of stakeholders to the change in language of education; sustenance of linguistic and
cultural identities of multi-ethnic communities and the development of varieties of English and the issue of
standards. These are issues that impact on language learners and teachers, society and governments.
These concerns will be discussed in the Malaysian context in comparison with the experiences of selected
multi-ethnic nations around the globe.
