EXERCISE

1. Write an individual reaction paper in which you discuss the main

concepts related to the transformation of Colombian education in
the 21st century.

THE CHALLENGE OF COLOMBIAN EDUCATION

In the next text I will talk about the inclusion and possible reforms to
improve our educational system.

All educational systems have deficiencies as states adopt foreign

methods, methodologies and frameworks for the cognitive development
of their inhabitants. The Colombian system is highly influenced by
European schooling since its history, but as President Santos mentioned
in his address at the Universidad Santo Tomas; The educational system
remains in a status quo, that is, it has not evolved and less adjusted to
the social, economic, cultural and political development of the nation;
Which stagnates the educational development of the country.

As the president mentioned, formal Colombian education is divorced

between schooling for the rich, and poor schooling for the poor. While
the upper strata enjoy good infrastructure, technological development,
trained teachers, professional curricula and so on; Public education lacks
these resources, which limits its supply and quality.

Although the current educational system aims to reform, it is short

because of its low investment in this sector - such as the annual
unemployment of teachers, international results in terms of the
efficiency of schoolchildren in basic sciences and technology, low
bilingualism index , etc-

However, Muoz (2002) affirms that education is aimed at satisfying

the global needs of the society to which it is directed. On the other
hand, Graells (2002) assures that the educational quality promotes that
all young people acquire knowledge; Develop abilities, skills and
attitudes to prepare them for adult life. And finally Kaoru Ishikawa
(1986) points out that educational quality is the development of all the
steps and processes that allow a production free of defects.

Although the latter definition focuses on competency education, it is

important to narrow it down because students must prepare for
production from various sectors of society, and if the quality of
education is not good, their work performance will not be either.

The Colombian educational system fulfills some of the requirements

for the training of competitive students, such as: promoting student
participation, engaging families in the teaching-learning process,
promoting change and innovation in institutions, Facilitate personal,
organizational and material resources, and accessibility in one way or
another. These characteristics, although they are, are short by the lack
of investment in the education sector; And especially the weak periodic
reform proposed by the governments in turn, consequently to not adjust
the educational model to the needs of the country.

In conclusion, we can say that the main change that the country
must make to its education system is investment. If one invests in an
education that promotes a development from the instruction of the
educational plans, to the materialization of tools that allow pragmatizing
the instructional projects, and the offer of a solid scenario of teaching
work; A unified vision for quality education would be structured.
