What is an Intelligent Well Completion?

One companys Intelligent Well

Completion is anothers simple
well completion
An intelligent well enables an
operator to:
Remotely monitor and control
flow downhole, at the
reservoir, with no physical
intervention
Optimize well, production and
reservoir management
processes

SmartWell Intelligent Completions

Optimize well, production and reservoir management processes by enabling the

operator to remotely monitor and control well inflow or injection downhole, at the
reservoir, with no physical intervention

SmartWell Systems in Subsea Applications
Location
Na Kika field located in the Mississippi Canyon area in deepwater
Gulf of Mexico
Challenge
Differential pressure, crossflow, or early water breakthrough were
the main risks identified with producing multiple-completion wells
that might lead to costly well interventions
Results
SmartWell systems installed in Shell/BP Na Nika field in 2003
Downhole valves and sensors optimize production offtake and
provide downhole data in real-time
Field experiences published in 2007
The project has been an economic and technical success. The
application of intelligent well technology has enabled co-
owners, Shell and BP to successfully develop Na Kika with a
minimum number of wells and continues to help provide world-
class reservoir surveillance data and ensure high standards of
reservoir management

Full Field Subsea WAG Development

Increased production rate and stable produced water cut rate (14%)
Significant improvement in reservoir sweep efficiency

Background and Subsurface Setting

Location: Snorre area in the Norwegian North
Sea, consisting of the Snorre, Vigdis, and
Tordis fields (production started in August 1992)
Southern Snorre field is developed with a
floating tension leg platform and a subsea
template
Northern Snorre field (Snorre B) put on
production in 2001 and is developed with semi-
submersible production installation

Challenge
Complex reservoir structure, with varying properties and many flow barriers
Individual sand bodies are often non-continuous
Permeability contrasts are significant; faulting changes flow patterns
Full Field Subsea WAG Development
Increased production rate and stable produced water cut rate (14%)
Significant improvement in reservoir sweep efficiency
