5 SUGGESTED PIPE SUPPORT SPACING

AS4041-2006: TABLE 3.28.2 SUGGESTED PIPE SUPPORT SPACING
SPEC-000-S-12003

Pipe Supports
Installation of pipe supports shall be in accordance with SPEC-000-S-12003.

Pipe supports shall be fabricated and surface treated prior to installation.

Pipe supports for pipe above DN80 shall be bolted to parent structures. Pipe supports for smaller
than DN80 may be fabricated as part of that structure. Where this is not possible and welding of
pipe supports is required, as agreed with the Client Representative in

Pipe Supports Spans for Steel Piping

Refer to AS4041 table 3.28.2 for pipe support spacing.

Pipe Supports Spans for Polyethylene Piping

For above ground polyethylene piping where continuous support and securing against uplift is
required, standard NEMA 20C cable ladder sections shall be used. Ladders shall be fixed in
accordance with standard drawing requirement and installed in accordance with SPEC-000-S-
12003.

All components for the cable ladder shall be hot dip galvanised including ladder, supports and
brackets. Where specified stainless steel ladder shall be used in place of galvanised ladder in
marine applications.

Continuous cable ladder runs shall have an expansion joint or gap every 50 m. This can be by
means of splice plates loosely connected but with double nuts on all bolts. Alternatively ladders may
have a simple physical gap where used solely for piping. Pipes within ladders shall be fixed as
follows:

In accordance with standard drawings;

At 25 metre maximum intervals along straight runs to prevent uplift by cyclonic winds.

For piping 110 OD and greater and not continuously supported in cable ladder, spans between
supports shall not exceed spans listed in

Notes:

1. All

2. Table Error! No text of specified style in document..1 support spans are in metres
3.

4. Table Error! No text of specified style in document..1 does not allow for concentrated loads such
as valves, instruments etc. typical of long interconnecting piping.
5. Required length of linear contact for pipe on bare steel is 75 mm up to 315 OD, 100 mm for 355 OD pipe,
150 mm for 400 OD and 450 OD pipe, 200 mm for 500 OD pipe and 250 mm for 630 OD pipe to ensure
pipe is not overstressed due to localised denting. Where this length of support is not available or a larger
span is required then pipe shoes shall be used. . (Calculation TBC)
6. All pipes have been analysed based on a simply supported beam of two equal spans and a uniformly
distributed load over the full span.
7. Maximum deflection is equal to Span / 360.
8. Where a shoe is required, the local stresses at the shoe to pipe interface have been checked using the
Roark and Young method. (Calculation TBC)
