Principal Williams and Mr. Hicksville Billy Joel upper left corner at HHS graduation in
June
4 original Hicksvillites; Nafie Buck, Flo Gries, Michael Caruso Jr. , Rose McGeever. We
celebrated my mother's 90th birthday and my Aunt Ro's 94th birthday. Sadly their other
sibling, Fran, passed away last year as she would have fit between Ro and Flo at 94 years
old. Nafie and my Uncle Mike have been friends since they were young children. God
Bless them all

Me and my oldest friend from Hicksville, Jordan Klein, celebrating our 69th birthdays in
downtown Denver!
Editor notebut whos the eldest???

SteveSaw a great photo of you and Jordan Klein on Facebook (see above). Good
friends are hard to find and I applaud the 50 years you have known Jordan as gospel as to
the way life should continue...everyone being friends...not the turmoil that is threatening
everyone, everywhere nowadays. Did Jordan graduate from Hicksville? I searched
classmates and did not see him listed. Give me a little background about this long term
friendship. Thanks for your help.
Buffalo Bob Casale

Bob- Jordan and I met before we both entered Dutch Lane! Im surprised that he's not on
classmates! He graduated with me in 1966. Thanks for the reunion promo! All my best to
you. Steve

I found him in the yearbook but when searching 1966 on classmates, his name does not
show. Thanks. I now can caption the photo.

Dear HixNewsIn July, my wife Janet and I traveled to Virginia to visit

Reverend William A. Palmer, HHS Class of 1964, and his wife Carolyn. We were there
to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his being ordained a minister.
Before writing this, I looked at Bills HIXNEWS Bio, and I now respectfully suggest to
him that it has become obsolete. Although nominally a retired minister, Bill remains
extremely active in his community. He has become Vice-President of the historical
society mentioned in his Bio. Moreover, during our brief trip I learned that despite what
Bills Bio says, his being Chaplain of the West Point, VA Fire Department is far from
being a hobby Bill responds to emergency FD calls around the clock, comforting
crash or fire victims and their families. He has been trained to identify PTSD, and to take
appropriate steps when responders (or victims) show signs of it. Furthermore, since
creating that Bio, he has increased his workload by becoming Chaplain for the Police
Department, another demanding job.
The formal celebration of his ordination anniversary was conducted as a Christian
Service of Thanksgiving at Old St. Johns Church, a beautifully restored early
18th century building. In addition to family, friends, and clergy representing various
faiths, it was attended by grateful members of Bills past ministerial flocks. The Chiefs
of the Fire and Police Departments attended, and were among those who spoke in praise
of Bill. As I have known Bill for 60 years, the accolades he received were no surprise to
me, for I realized long ago that he is an exceptional man, truly committed to his family
and his calling. At the reception following the service, Janet and I had the pleasure of
meeting a number of his friends and extended family.

Before we returned to Toronto, Bill and Carolyn took us to Historic Jamestown for a
fascinating visit to the archaeological dig and museum at the site of the 1607 English
settlement. Despite the intense July heat, our hosts made the day, and the entire visit, a
great experience.

This was probably the most memorable birthday ever. Came down with a severe case of
salmonella from eating tainted papaya and was an awful experience! Found out
subsequent to the food poisoning that there was a nationwide recall of papaya last week.
The supermarket neglected to call me with a heads up until after the eruption. So much
for the fruit thats imported from other countries that dont adhere to the same health
guidance when it comes to food handling. Food handlers should be on the top of the list
when better sanitation is an issue. I guess it happens here as well but not as often. No
birthday cake for me!!!Linda Piccerelli Hayden 1960

appreciated. We are celebrating by taking the Northwest Passage across the top of the
world through the Arctic Circle, from Anchorage, Alaska and back to New York City via
the North Pole and Greenland. Best to everyone at HixNews.
Diane Boseling Baum (Jericho High School 1962) & Steve Baum 1962
Editor Note The Northwest Passage is a sea route connecting the Northern Atlantic
and Pacific Oceans through the Arctic Ocean, along the northern coast of North America
via waterways through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The various islands of the
archipelago are separated from one another and from the Canadian mainland by a series
of Arctic waterways collectively known as the Northwest Passages or Northwestern
Passages.

Thanks for the birthday card. How did you know James Brown was one of my favorite!?
Played his songs when I was with Shades of Blue featuring band members Don Dixon,
Bob Rosenfeld and George Reich. Big Birthday70YikesBob Leo 1965

BobDo you have any photos of the "Shades of Blue"? Did the other band members
graduate from Hicksville??? When??? If not from Hicksville, where did they attend
school? Hope you are well. James Brown was a Georgia native. He still has a local
charity that gives out turkeys at Thanksgiving and presents to kids at Christmas.
buffalo bob

Hi BuffUnfortunately, I have no photos of the group. All of us except our drummer, Al

Rich were Hicksville grads. The band came about from a group of us (me, George
Reisch, Bob Rosenfeld, Jim Gorman & Ralph Grasso) getting together to play. We later
"recruited" Don Dixon (another Hicksville grad) and Al (Levittown) from a great band
called The Nomads after Jim & Ralph left us. We added a female lead singer from
Farmingdale, Gail Dunwoody. Gail and I left the group after awhile, but the rest of the
group stayed together, adding another horn which made "big" soul group sound. (The
group should not be confused with The Shades of Blue that had a hit single call "Oh How
Happy You Have Made Me"). We had the name first! After the group broke up, some of
the original members formed another group which I was an original member of, "The
Unluv'd". That group was all HIX grads: me, Bob, George, Mark Leon and Lea Santos. I
left that group and was replaced by guitarist Mike Reid (also a HIX guy) and Billy
Johnson (lead singer). Sadly, I believe Bob Rosenfeld and Billy Johnson have passed
away. Thanks for your interestBob Leo 1965

Bob Rosenfeld, Don Dixon, myself, Mark were class of '65. George R., not sure. Lea not
sure; I think '67,8 or 9. Jim Gorman, Ralph Grasso same year(s) as Lea. Mike Reid, Billy
Johnson not sure As far as recordings, I have a copy of the only Unluv'd recording made,
"Steadfastly" which was recorded after I left the group. Lea, George, Bob, Billy and Mike
made the record. As far as I know, The Shades of Blue never made any records.
I was on a recording with another Hix group with Bob R., George R. and Mike Foley:
The Stiches. The record was titled I'm Looking For You Baby; flip side was Hey You.
Mike wrote both songs; not sure what year he graduated. Don't recall who the drummer
was in that group.
More interesting stuff re: recordings: I have a record on the Columbia label which Lea
Santos sang lead on, with a (mostly HIX) group named Stonybrook People. They
recorded "Easy To Be Hard". It was a very promising effort which received air play on
the radio, until Three Dog Night recorded the same song soon AFTER them.
Unfortunately Three Dog Night's recording prevailed and became a hit. Stonybrook
People members included Larry Wertzel, Lea Santos, Mary Jane Mandala, Patty
Lombardo, Russ Rosenfeld (Bob's brother), and I think Art Catanzarita (before he joined
The Brooklyn Bridge). Not sure of any of their grad years; should be mid-to-late 60's.
Maybe you can contact these grads to jog their memories, and see if they have
pics/records. Just a note, it has been my experience that I have a better memory of people
from my past than they do of me.
Happy to be of helpBob Leo

Captain calls for his red shirt when pirates arrive, and the reason had me
cracking up. The captains of ships are known for being quality leaders. If this
crew doubted his bravery before, theyll at least know now that hes going to
stand with his men no matter what.
A ship was traveling in a dangerous part of the sea. The captain saw a single pirate ship
approaching their vessel.
The captain yells to his crew, Men, bring me my red shirt!
The crew brings him his red shirt, he puts it on, and leads the men in battle. They lose one
man, but on the whole it was a great victory. Everyone wonders what the deal is with the
red shirt, but they just shrug it off.
A few days later, the captain sees 2 pirate ships in the distance.
He again yells, Men, bring me my red shirt!
The crew does so, and they fight off the pirates. They lose a few more men this time, but
at least most of them are unharmed.
However, this time curiosity got the best of them, and they ask the Captain why hes
asked for his red shirt during the battles. He answers, Well crew, I know all of you look
to me for support and morale. I knew there would be a good chance of me getting injured,
and I didnt want you to see me all bloody and fear that all is lost. Therefore I put on a
red shirt so that my injuries will blend in with the shirt.
A few weeks later, the ship is traveling in another sea, and in the distance, there are
suddenly 10 fearsome pirate ships.
The captain spots them and yells, Men, bring me my brown pants!

After loading your dishwasher, and before you start the cycle, run the hot water from the
tap until you test it with your finger and find its getting hot. Then start the machine
knowing that youre opening temperature will benefit the wash and rinse!!!

The easiest way to find something lost around the house is to buy a replacement.

I note that from various Hicksville pages on Facebook the parfait dessert from Gertz is
the holy grail of Hicksville nostalgia. If Hix News has not previously run an item it
would be interesting to learn if any of the readers can disclose the secret recipe. The
internet has several chats on the topic but the recipe is enshrouded in the past. Perhaps
one of the locals should stop by Macy's and ask the store manager if there are any old
records that might shed light. My guess is was purchased commercially from a long
defunct vendor.
Ken Marcus 1967

"Holy Grail" is an awesome characterization.

Vin Fallacara 1977

This has been discussed in the past in the Hicksville High newsletters and I had stored
some information that I cannot locate since it was an old topic. Gertz sold this incredible
ice cream that many will remember fondly. What was it called and does anyone have a
recipe to share about the ingredients that were included in this delightful treat??? Was it
sold until Gertz closed its doors at Mid Island Plaza (or Hicksville Mall)???
Thanks Buffalo Bob Casale
Custard, maybe?
Diane Snyder Gould 1964

Bob, I remember that well. It wasn't ice cream but more like custard and they would slide
a spoonful of chocolate syrup and maybe strawberry. They sold for a ridiculous
amount...7 cents I think???
Connie Casella Shein 1964 w/ Kristi Allen Esposito & Donna Lagana Cislak)
OK. So, were in search of a soft serve frozen custard. Likely a commercial mix that went
into a machine, I guess? I was snooping around a little and it seems there may have been
a similar item sold at A&S and McCrory. I'm wondering if it was supplied to multiple
stores from the same manufacturer.
Allison Lombardi Worthington 1989

My friends and I always called it a "malt" even though there was no malt in it. Only 10
cents back in the fifties! You grabbed my attention and got me going on this, so I did a bit
of research. I have a distant cousin who worked primarily at the Jamaica Gertz store but
was in Hicksville on occasion. He was able to fill me in on some of the missing pieces.
The reason we called them "malts" was not because they contained any malt, or
resembled a malted. The name of the snack bar was simply "The Malt Shoppe." He also
recalls that the blond woman who worked there in the Fifties and Sixties was named
Jackie. Jamaica also had a similar "Malt Shoppe" serving the same treat. The frosted treat
was made from a milk-based pre-mix provided by Fairway Farms and delivered twice
weekly. It amazes me that my relative is pushing 80 and still remembers details like this.
I have problems remembering why I walked into a room!
Elliot Gorlin 1963

Im pretty sure it was called "parfait". check out the following

https://www.justapinch.com/.../bavarian-custard-dessert...
Bruce Rosenzweig 1969

It was also sold at Gertz in Jamaica Queens and it was called a frappe.
Vera Manganelli Hoke Capes 1959
To answer Buffalo Bobs question, yes, it was sold till Gertz closed, I believe. It is and
was the most beloved dessert. It came with either chocolate or strawberry added. I don't
believe it has been replicated anywhere. I believe it was some sort of custard. So
delicious! Brings back many good memories.
Virginia Cabbe Reinhardt 1964

It was called a "Frostee Malt"......it was written on the side of the silver machine, that
broke down regularly........sometimes we had to wait until a load of cleaned parfait
glasses came out of the washer!
Robert Plotsky 1972
I think it was called a frozen malted.
Marcia Diamond Sandler 1971

I worked that stand with Brian Sullivan in 1971-1972. Don't remember the mix just threw
in machine and let it go
Dan Kelly 1973
Yes, it was a parfait ~ they had chocolate and strawberry and they were 10 cents each -
LOVED THEM - and yes in Gertz - think they closed before Gertz closed but not sure.
Linda Turchiano Webber 1974

It was soooo good. Was like a vanilla fluff moose. Don't know how to explain it, but it
was soooo yummy!
Valerie Seiden-Ferrara 1977

Okay, okay, now that you all got my mouth watering, WHO has the recipe??? LOL
Ruth Geiger 1971
I think it was called a malted.
Charlene Kratchman Terranova Rabin 1971

Unfortunately I don't think anyone has the actual recipe and the childhood memory is
probably the one ingredient that would be very hard to duplicate!
Jeannie Kaplan Toplin 1969
I would guess that the recipe was very simple, as ingredients in the day were not infused
with coloring, preservatives, enhancers of all sorts and allowed the natural flavors to
come through. and probably real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup.
Bruce Rosenzweig 1969 (shown above with Judy)

Once I mixed Breyers vanilla ice cream with cool whip (to make it creamier!) then
slipped a spoonful of Hershey's syrup in it - in a Parfait glass - and it was closest thing I
remember to this most wonderful dessert memory!!!
Donna Benfante Heeter 1974
I used to get strawberry swirl in the creamy smooth vanilla custard. I'll bet there was real
vanilla in that custard.
Mindy Moscowitz Brintz 1973

I remembered that my mom worked at Hertz and we would go to Gertz whenever we

went to see her. I have never found anything like it. There was an ingredient they added,
but I don't know what it was?
Diana Urena 1961
It wasn't ice cream. It was some kind of soft-serve custard served in a glass ice cream
dish. You could only get it in vanilla, but they could add in different flavored syrups like
chocolate or strawberry, if my memory serves me correctly. I always used to order them
with chocolate syrup.
Artie Schwartz 1969

They were Bavarian Cream Parfaits, I had them a few years ago at the October festival at
Hunter Mountain same as I remembered them growing up.
Frank Anderson 1980

For all my friends here is how my day went - got to the Port Authority Bus Terminal
(PABT) at 7 and was getting ready to load for Long Island. Opened the bay door so
passengers could put bags in and started to walk back into PABT when I tripped and fell
face down on the divider between 403 & 404. Split my right eye by the socket and
banged up my right arm and fractured a bone at the base of pinky in my right hand.
Knocked the wind out of myself and had to be helped up. PABT people and cops came
by and they called EMS and I spent the rest of the day in the hospital getting everything
tended to! I now have a shiner any pro boxer would be proud of and a splint on my hand!
Got back to Chester by 7:30 pm. Needless to say, I won't be working for a while! So how
did your day go? LOLMadeline Bianco DeLouisa 1960

The other day, I went to this bar that I have been frequenting for a number of years
and I was stopped at the door. The guy said he couldn't let me in.
When I asked why, he said the bar had changed owners and they now required that
the gentlemen customers be wearing a tie.
After a few minutes of arguing, I realized that I needed to get a tie. I got back to my
car and look in the glove box and a bag of dirty laundry in the back seat - no tie.
I checked under the seats and finally I look in the trunk ... all I see is a pair of
jumper cables. I think, "What the heck".
I tie the jumper cables around my neck and head back to the bar. When I meet the
guy at the door, I ask him, "OK - how's this?"
He says, "Well ... I guess that's OK - BUT DON'T START ANYTHING!"

As we are getting closer to the October 13th-15th weekend, and the 50 Year reunion for
the class of 1967, the schedule is firming up. There is still time for a few more
registrations and anyone who has been sitting on the fence thinking about attending, take
the time now, make a leap and join your classmates for the soon to be memorable
weekend.
Alice Hayden 1972
A man goes to see the Rabbi. Rabbi, something terrible is happening and I have to
talk to you about it.
The Rabbi asked, Whats wrong?
The man replied, My wife is poisoning me.
The Rabbi, very surprised by this, asks, How can that be?
The man then pleads, Im telling you, Im certain shes poisoning me, what should I
do?
The Rabbi then offers, Tell you what. Let me talk to her, Ill see what I can find out
and Ill let you know.
A week later, the Rabbi calls the man and says, Well, I spoke to your wife. I spoke
to her on the phone for three hours. You want my advice?
The man said yes and the Rabbi replied, Take the poison.

TWO OLD GUYS DANCING

James Cagney and Bob Hope at a Friar's Club Meeting back when actors were real
performers. Bob Hope was 52 and James Cagney was 56. The year was 1955.
For the young folks, here is something you've probably never seen before and,
unfortunately, you may never see again.
For us older folks, this is the best of the best, and we had it for many years! This is a side
of these two entertainers you hardly ever saw, but it shows you their enormous talent.
Bob Hope, the best of comedians, and James Cagney, mostly cast as the bad guy, a
gangster in the movies.

Love the expression on the mans face after told what the value was!
