For all regular verbs (-ER, -IR, and -RE), take the 3rd person plural form (ils) of
the present tense of the verb, drop the -ent ending to find the stem, and add the
subjunctive endings:
-e, -es, -e, -ions, -iez, -ent
The first is two-stem verbs, which follow the same pattern as regular verbs for the
singular conjugations (je, tu, il, elle, on) as well as the third person plural (ils/elles).
However, they use the first person plural (nous) as the stem for their nous and vous
forms of the subjunctive. Most irregular verbs follow this pattern:
Other verbs which follow this two-stem rule are appeler, acheter, croire, devoir,
ennuyer, employer, jeter, mourir, payer, prfrer, recevoir, and voir.
The second category is verbs which have irregular stems but which still use the same
endings. This is the complete list:
The third type of irregular verb in the subjunctive is verbs with two stems and irregular
endings. This is, of course, avoir and tre.

3) The use of the subjunctive
The subjunctive mood is used to express actions which are subjective: will/wanting,
emotion, doubt, possibility, necessity, judgment. It is nearly always found in dependent
clauses introduced by que or qui.
(Note: the indicative mood is used to talk about objective actions: facts, things you are
sure about)
The subjects of the dependent and main clauses are usually different.
Example:
Je veux que tu le fasses. I want you to do it.
Il faut que nous partions. It is necessary that we leave.
BUT: If the subject is the same in the main clause and the dependent clause, you just use
the infinitive in the dependent clause.
Example: Je veux le faire I want to do it.
Il prfre rester. He prefers to stay.
The subjunctive is used when the main clause expresses subjectivity, as with the
following cases:
Note The following verbs and expressions do not take the subjunctive when they are
used in the affirmative, because they express facts which are considered certain.
When negative or interrogatory, they require the subjunctive: Penses-tu qu'il soit
sympa ? Oui, je pense qu'il est sympa, Non, je ne pense pas qu'il soit sympa.

V. In a subordinate clause with the negative pronoun ne ... personne or ne ... rien, or
the indefinite pronoun quelqu'un or quelque chose.
Je ne connais personne qui veuille le I don't know anyone who wants to do it.

VI. After main clauses which contain the words seul, unique, premier, dernier, or
any superlative, the subjunctive is optional - it depends on how concrete the
speaker feels about what is being said.
C'est la seule personne que je connaisse. That's the only person I know.
C'est l'tudiante la plus intelligente que She's the smartest student I have.
