EEEB283 Exercise Synchronous Generator OCC, SCC, Performance and Capability

Curve 14 Sep 2009
Open Circuit Characteristic.
See my lecture note from page 10.
Generator is rotated at the rated speed. No load (IA=0A) is connected. Field current
(IF) is increased from 0 to rated value.
Record the values of the terminal voltage (VT) and field current (VT). Since IA = 0 A,
therefore EA = V. For delta-connected stator VT= V. For wye-connected stator
VT= V
This test basically relate the field current and flux relationship (IF and EA)
Short Circuit Characteristic.
Generator is rotated at rated speed. Adjust field current to 0. Short circuit the
terminals.
Measure armature current or line current as the field current is increased to a rated
value.
|IA|= , RA is obtained from DC test. Measure EA and IA at IF,rated and solve for Xs.

Question: A Y-connected 13.8 kV, 60Hz, two poles, 25 MVA, 0.8 PF lagging synchronous
generator is connected to a steam turbine capable of supplying up to 20MW of real power.
The following data were obtained from a test on the synchronous generator:
1. The terminal voltage, VT,OC, at rated field current, IF, was measured to be 14.1 kV.
2. The armature current, IA,SC, at rated field current, IF, was measured to be 5240 A.
3. When two of the generators terminals were connected to a 10V DC supply, a current of
20A is measured.
Answer the following questions:
a. Find per phase armature resistance and the synchronous reactance.
b. What is the voltage regulation for this generator?
c. What is the rotor angle at full load?
d. Construct the capability curve for this synchronous generator. Indicate clearly the field
current limit, stator current limit and the prime mover limit.
e. What is the maximum reactive power that can be supplied by this generator?
f. If this generator supplies 18 MW of real power, what is the maximum amount of reactive
power that can be simultaneously supplied? Justify your answer.

Solution:
a. For Y-connected stator, RA= = =0.25
"#$"%
! '

Xs = 1.55
( )

"#$"

OR using *+, - ./ &
, solve for Xs when RA= 0.25 ,
( )

Xs= 0$11 2 3$41 =1.53

b. We need to know the V and EA at full load.
5$67
V= 0o=79670o V.

8 (:
At full load, for Y-connected stator machine, |IA|=|IL|= 03;<=>
*5 9 5 5$67

The angle for the stator current is arccos(0.8) lag or 36.86o

Solve for EA using KVL:
EA=V+IA(RA+jXs)= 79670o+1046(-36.86o)(0.25+j1.55)=9219(7.1o)
?
VR= =0.1571 or 15.71%

c. =7.1o
d.Limits refer to full load. Sstatorlimit= 25 MVA. Pmax=20MW.

Origin of the DE curve, Qo= 3VIA2 = 3V = 3 = 124.5 MVAr.

@

Radius of the field current limit curve, |DE| = 3 EAIA = 3EA = 143.8 MVA.

e. On the Y-axis: Qmax=|De|-|Qo|= 143.8 124.5 = 19.3 MVAr.

f. If this generator supplies 18 MW of real power, what is the maximum amount of reactive
power that can be simultaneously supplied? Justify your answer.
From stator current limit, Qs= 41 2 0A =17.3 MVAr. The point on stator current limit
curve is (18, 17.3)
From the rotor current limit, DE2=P2+(Qo+QR)2=1422=182+(122+QR)2
Solve for QR, QR= 0;4 2 0A 2 044= 18.85 MVAr. The point on the field current limit
curve is (18, 18.85), which indicates maximum reactive power from the generator is limited
by Qs of 17.3 MVAr.
