Subject / Year Group: Maths IB SL Unit Number: 2

Title: Exponentials & Logarithms, Functions, Derivatives Length of Unit: Term 2
Summary of Unit
Students will study exponential functions and understand the concept of a logartithm. They will investigate
the associated laws and be able solve equations involving exponentials, logarithms as well as solve problems
involving growth and decay. They will understand the idea of a freciprocal finction and apply their skills in a
range of contexts. They will also understand the links between differentiation and gradient and use
derivatives to find equations of curves, tangents and normals. They will aslo be able to apply a number of
rules.
This constitutes Chapters 4, 5 and 7 from the accompanying textbook.

How will progress be measured?

Students will be given a short pre-topic quiz which focuses on prior learning
and skills. This is to inform planning and feedback will not be shared at an
Diagnostic Assessment:
individual level.

There will be ongoing formative assessment through monitoring of class and

homework. There will be investigation style questions to further extend and
Formative Assessment:
stretch understanding.

Students will be given a formal unit assessment that incorporates application

of the skills learned. Performance in this will be used in conjunction with
Summative Assessment:
progress identified during the unit when considering a final summative level.
