3.3.1.Intermediatemounting
Inmanualtransmissionswithreductiongeardesign,themainshaftispushedawayfromthe
countershaftbythegearingforces.Thiscausesadeviationoftheidealgearcontactpattern,which
substantiallyimpairsthestrengthofthegearsandcausesnoise.
Therefore,intheKtransmission,thelocationofthecountershaftsignificantlyrestrictstheshaftsfrom
bending.Inthisway,highertorquecanbetransmitted,comparedtoconventionaltransmissions,while
atthesametimereducinggearnoise.

Conventionalmanualtransmissionsnormallyusesplashlubrication.Duringthisprocess,thegears
onthecountershaftdipintothetransmissionoilanddistributeitthroughoutthetransmissionina
disorderlymannerasthegearsetrotates.Often,additionalequipmentsuchasoilpartitionplatesoroil
groovesarerequiredtobringtheoiltothegears,thebearingsortothesynchronizers.
IntheKtransmission,adrysumptypelubricationsystemisused(forthefirsttimeonaBMW).
Thedrysumpsystemconsistsof:
Anoilfilter
Anoilpump
Afuelinjectionpipe
Usinglessenergythanasplashlubricationsystem,thedrysumpsystemlubricatesthegears,the
bearingsandthesynchronizersinamoretargetedmanner.Thecontrolledoilflowalsoresultsinan
improvedtemperaturebalance,asthecoolingairisrouteddirectlyfromthevehicleunderbodytothe
filterintakeopening.Thisprovidescontinuouscoolingofthetransmissionoil.
Theoilfilteralsoimprovestheoilqualityandthustheload-carryingcapacityofthegeartrain.
3.3.3.Synchronization
Infirstandsecondgear,triple-conesynchronizersareused.Intheothergears,single-cone
synchronizersareinstalled.Toimproveshiftquality,theseareequippedwithanewlydevelopedcarbon
frictionlining.
3.3.4.Connectiondimensions
Theconnectiondimensionsforthetransmissionmountinghavebeentakenoverfrompreviousseries
applications.Inthisway,theintegrationintothevehicleenvironmenthasbeensimplifiedgreatly,asitis

Astart-upspeedlimitationisusedwiththeN63engine.Thislimitstheenginespeedwhilethevehicle
isatastandstill,dependingonthemodeoftheDynamicStabilityControlDSC,to35005500rpm.
Thispreventsaoverheatingofthedriveplateduringthestartingprocess.
TheexternaltransmissionoilcoolingisusedwiththeN63engine,guaranteesreliableoperation,
evenunderextremeconditions.Atransmissionoilpumppumpsthetransmissionoilthroughthe
transmissionoilcooler.Atransmissionoiltemperaturesensorisinstalledinthetransmission,which
switchesthetransmissionoilpumpon(transmissionoiltemperature>130C/266F)andoff
(transmissionoiltemperature<110C/230F).

TheElectronicTransmissionControl(EGS)controlunitisintegratedinthecontrolunitframeworkof
theelectronicimmobilizerEWS.Thisprovidesbetterprotectionagainsttheft.
Theoperationtakesplaceusingthegearselectorswitchortheshiftpaddles(option2TB,sport
automatictransmission,viathesteeringcolumnswitchclusterSZL).
Intheconverter,second-generationmechanicaltorsionalvibrationdampersareused:

trainingmaterialavailableonTISandICP.
Thevibrationisolationreducestheproportionofslipontheconverterlockupclutchandenablesa
largeroperatingrangewiththeconverterlockupclutchclosed.Thisreducesthefuelconsumptionby
5%to6%intheconsumptioncycle(KV01)comparedtotheTU6-speedautomatictransmissionused
untilnow.
