Newsletter of The Hill United Presbyterian Church Butler, PA

So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give
up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those
of the family of faith. Galatians 4: 28

16th Sunday After Pentecost

Sermon: Spiritual Gifts III: Building A Fire

Rev. James Steiner

Scripture: Romans 12: 4-6; John 10: 1-16

Dear Friends in Christ,

Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the
same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all
the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us (Romans 12:4-6).

So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up
the church (1 Corinthians 14:12).

When we give our life to Christ, God sends the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, to
live inside us. One Greek word used by Jesus to describe the Holy Spirit is paraklete,
meaning, one who walks alongside. Besides the gift of eternal life, we also receive
another thing (or things!) we receive spiritual gifts. Every Christian has at least one
spiritual gift; some have more.

During September, my messages will look at spiritual gifts. If we read Scripture, we can
count fifteen; some books list as many as twenty-seven. The most important thing is for us
to discern and know what our gift is (or what our gifts are!) As I have said, another benefit
of knowing your gifts is knowing what our gifts are not! if we are not comfortable with
teaching, or administration, or hospitality, thats fine maybe God has given us another gift!

Have you ever taken a spiritual gift survey? Do you know what your gifts are? We will be
distributing a survey in the coming weeks for you to fill out. After youre finished, you will
have some idea of what God has given you.

More important, once you discover what your gift is, God himself commands us to live it out
to build up the Body of Christ. Every member of the Body is important, and each one
contributes to the work of the Body.

Elsewhere in this edition of the Up On The Hill, I have listed brief descriptions of some
spiritual gifts. Look them over, and see what interests you perhaps God is speaking!

As you read this, your Session has had its first meeting of the new church year, including the
newly-elected and returning elders. The Deacons continue their ministry as well. Pray for
your leaders as they guide and serve Hill into the future.

And of course, continue to pray for the Pastor Nominating Committee their work is just
beginning, and they need your support, encouragement, and prayers.

Challenges remain, but this is only brief period in the life and history of Hill. God is faithful,
and since we know there is a happy ending ahead, enjoy the journey!

In Christ,

Pastor Jim

Seventeen volunteers served community dinner to a

record number of guests in August! One hundred
fifteen guests enjoyed a meal of chicken, potato
salad, mixed vegetables, fresh cantaloupe, and
brownies. Many thanks to those who helped with WORSHIP
the baking this month. We are blessed that this ministry is ATTENDANCE
supported by so many individuals and groups in our church. To find IN
out how you can help, contact Barb or Jim Kamerer at 724.283.2248. JULY AND AUGUST

After three productive meetings, the Pastor Nominating Sunday

Committee continues to work on the Ministry Information
Form, an extensive document that gives pastors looking 7/2 85
for a new church home a profile of Hill, the types of 7/9 80
ministries that we participate in, and the qualities that we
are looking for in a new pastor. Upon completion, the Form will be approved
7/16 91
by Session and the Presbytery thus allowing us to begin the interview 7/23 72
process. 7/30 107
The Committee has also elected a leadership board that consists of Jim 8/6 98
Ihlenfeld as Chair, Barb Graham as Vice-Chair, and Nancy Daugherty as 8/13 70
Secretary. The Committee will continue to meet on a weekly basis and would
appreciate your continued prayer through this important process. 8/20 76

Handicap Lift Project Update

In June, the Hill Session authorized the expenditure of up to $20,000 to develop architectural/engineering
plans to install a handicap lift to address the needs of individuals with mobility issues who attend worship
and other church events.
Subsequently, the Administration Committee signed an agreement
with Olsen Craft Associates of Butler to develop plans for the
installation of a Garaventa 3-stop lift. This is a lift, not an elevator, and
is more cost effective.
In July, members of the committee and Rev. Steiner visited Union
Presbyterian Church in Clintonville and saw a similar lift which has
been used by their congregation since 2008.
Based on that visit, and a recommendation by architect David Hill from
Olsen Craft, the committee is confident that this unit will be beneficial
and assist the congregation and visitors that have mobility issues to
enter the sanctuary and Fellowship Hall with ease, without having to
navigate the Second Street steps.
In August, Session approved funding for this project. Please refer to
the Session Notes article in this newsletter. Cost of the project will
be financed by a combination of the following: a capital campaign,
application for a $2,000 grant from the Beaver Butler Presbytery, a
potential low interest loan from the Presbyterian Investment and Loan
Program (PILP) from the PC (USA), and the use of any necessary
endowment funds.
In order to pay for the lift project the Session has approved a special
capital campaign, entitled Lifting Up Gods People. The campaign
pledge period will be from September 10-28, 2017. Members will
receive more information in the coming month along with a Minute for
Mission during Sunday worship.
Look for more information on how you can help this project come to
fruition.
