Gary Rhodes gives us
an exclusive pre-opening
tour of his new Dubai
restaurant, and puts us to
work chopping veg for a
three-course meal comprised
of the finest local ingredients

Striding into the bright, gleaming foyer of


the five-star Le Royal Méridien hotel, Gary
Rhodes looks like just another guy off the
street – albeit a guy with a purposeful gait.
But place the British-born chef-cum-TV star
in his natural environment and he’s far from
ordinary. Exploding through the doors of his
enormous new kitchen at Rhodes Twenty10,
the celebrity chef (we’ll call him that,
although he hates it, insisting he’s “a chef, not
some E-list celebrity”) is clearly the man in
charge, dispensing plain, staccato orders and
chatting to his chefs while tying on his apron
and ordering his fourth coffee of the day (it’s
10.30am), before focusing on the task ahead.
Before we’re allowed to see his new
restaurant, resplendent in black and purple
and decorated with Jack Vettriano paintings
(“a touch of the gangster about it”), we first
have to don an apron of our own and help
Gary knock out a three-course meal using,
at our insistence, choice local ingredients –
sourced by the man himself.
Voicing his surprise that his chefs had
managed to find the quails’ eggs he asked
for, Gary nibbles the arrish cheese, before
nodding his approval and admitting he’s

“You can create colourful, attractive, sexy
little dishes from just a few ingredients,” he
assures us. “The trouble is, when people come
to our restaurant they think they’re going to
have some kind of gastronomic extravaganza.

hands, he commands, “Right, let’s get started”

After a month off, it’s time
for our desperate dieter to
get physical

Last month, a friend said he’d read a book that


claimed an hour’s exercise each day was the
best way to get fit fast. “What’s one hour out
of 24?” he innocently asked, as we puffed our
way around Dubai Marina in 40 degree heat. I
glared at him and muttered “It’s an hour when
I can’t be sleeping”.
But he’s right. And so is his stupid book.
And so is my new trainer, Dominic. I hate
being wrong. A series of chaotic weekends, a
holiday in Spain (where our fridge resembled
something out of Animal House), guests
