Diary

of the Pain.ng Golden Summer

or Requiem for an Anthurium(1).

1. Signed up for an eCourse with Lynn Whipple (2). And got course materials
together mainly Golden paints (3), Unison pastels (4) and Winsor and Newton
canvases from the Range.

2. Visited Narcissus(5) for some owers and inspiraLon, and was given a wonderful
selecLon of owers, which lasted for weeks. Plus my brother gave me a colourful bunch.

3. Started by covering all of the canvas with Cadmium Orange Hue, Burnt Sienna
and Titanium white to give a dusky orange base.

4. Then sketches with vine charcoal and pastel, moving the board in 3 dierent
direcLons. And rubbing back lines each Lme.

5. Then painted an Undercoat layer in

muted shades, picking up shapes from the three
previous sketches (picture leW).

6. First loose painLng of the owers (below)

7. PainLng in a background. Then more painLng and

pastels (leW)

8. Stocktake. The only bit I liked was the red

anthurium on the right! And I was a lot reluctant to
paint him over!!

So back to the drawing board!

9. Another layer of orange applied, sparing the

anthurium and nding some lovely textures behind the
paint. (A hosta in the garden muscled his shadow into
the photo too!)

10. More sketching in charcoal and pastel (Pictures below). Got some lovely
orange lilies from Demis Flowers in Portobello (6), plus some new sunowers.

11. Another pastel underlay and then started

painLng again (picture below leW)

12. MANY hours later! That poor old anthurium

knows his days are numbered! (picture below right)

14. Some nal ediLng and reworking the lilies.

Then 6 coats of Golden Archival SaLn varnish!(7)
And a nice frame from Frameworks (8).

I am donaLng sale of this picture by blind aucLon to Scoosh Cot Death Trust
hgp://www.scooshcotdeathtrust.org/ , a wonderful organisaLon, who have been a
great help to me over many years. Blank greeLng cards are also on sale as well for the
Scoosh Cot Death Trust. These are printed by Southelds at Dalkeith. hgps://

The way the picture was painted is a wee bit like cot death babies, in that although parts
of the painLng are no longer visible, they form a very important part in the nal richness
of the picture. Same for us families too.
