Regional Recognition
For Local Project
The Wayland Partnership Growing Together Project came to a
close at the end of July after a truly amazing 12 month run.
Thanks must go to the Peoples Post Code Lottery for funding,
and the Wayland Partnership for the vision of an environmental
initiative for the area. Almost 600 people have been involved
across community projects and the highly successful Acorn Fair
held in January.
July 18th saw Trevor Bunce and myself Pam Morgan (pictured
right) attending the prestigious Norfolk Biodiversity Awards
which each year acknowledges and celebrates voluntary efforts
to improve wildlife, and encourage greater community
engagement with conservation. The Saham Toney Wells Cole
Community Project received a Highly Commended award and
was runner up to Sprowston Town Council.
This well-deserved award for the people of Saham was the icing
on the cake for the Growing Together Project which has re-
invigorated and breathed new life into many existing Millennium
Projects in our Wayland Villages. We have also worked in
partnership with Norfolk Wildlife Trust on their County Wildlife
Action Plan, churchyard wildflower surveys, and created from
scratch a wildlife area for the community of Saham Toney.
Much has been achieved for wildlife and conservation in Watton
and the Wayland district during this project. There has been no
shortage of commitment, enthusiasm, and fun for all involved with
communities and our treasured wildlife all coming out winners.
Sustainability and continuity are now the watch words for all
our projects as I step aside as Outreach Worker. My key
objective was to set a few seeds and hope that giant Oaks
from little acorns might grow and flourish, indeed they have.

School House, Church Walk
We have attended our second year at The annual "Wayland Show", this year five
of our members Harry Moult, Brian Dyson, Ron Payne, Jeff Heath and Alan
Dockray all took a turn at our stand in the Health and Wellbeing Marque, they all
seemed to have an enjoyable day with lots of interest and enquiries. Our
membership is now almost at 50 and with requests for membership reaching 2 to 3
a month we may soon have to consider putting a limit on the total membership we
can accept, this is a difficult decision to have to make after spending the last 18
months trying to recruit members!
Our Workshop is now up and running with our workshop supervisor David
Gambrell and one or two of our other members putting in a lot of hard work over
the past months sorting all the Tools and equipment and getting the electrical items

Watton U3A Watton Society - Watton in Bloom

In July Geoff Ray, formerly of Total
Health Pharmacy, gave us the insight
into his epic Marathon des Sables, in
which he took part in April of this year.
The Marathon des Sables (MdS) has
been going for 32 years and out of 1150
competitors 200 from the UK can apply
for places. Geoff applied and in January
2016 he was successful. He was told he

training, 80-100 miles a week as well as
working at the pharmacy. MdS takes 6

Ishin Ryu Ju Jitsu
Another awesome summer at Ishin Ryu Ju Jitsu
headquarters in Caston.
The children's summer gradings have been a
flying success with many celebrating children
ranging in from 4 to 16 years
Also the summer months see the teenagers and
adults, from around the UK, travel to Norfolk for
the 'summer adult gradings' held in Caston.
I would like to make special mention of Honbu's
(this means the home dojo-headquarters) very
own Grace Munday, who participated in her first
ever adult grading. Grace has been with the club
since the age of four and at the tender age of
'nearly 16' she decided she was ready to attempt
not one, but two gradings on the same day. After
12 years of consistent training Grace was very
proud to receive her adult yellow belt.
Congratulations Grace, and all the other
successful students.

Richmond Park
Golf Club -
Ladies Section
It has been a busy summer of golf for the
Ladies of Richmond Park Golf Club. On
Monday 31st July eligible ladies played an
18 hole Stableford competition for the
Granny Trophy. The trophy was presented
to the Ladies Section by Fran Parker a
previous Ladies Captain. It was a very close
competition culminating in a win for Eileen
Chard with a score of 33 points. In second
place, with 32 points, was Jeanette Fowler
and in third place, with 31 points, was
Cherrie Lawn.
On Friday 4th August it was Ladies
Invitation Day which was played in the 4
Ball Better Ball Stableford format. Although
conditions were quite tricky with a blustery
wind, Chris Bailey and her guest Val
Griffith, from Swaffham Golf Club,
produced some amazing golf to win with 41
points. In second place, with 36 points, were
Elaine Aberdeen and her guest Lesley
Bingle, also from Swaffham. In third place,
with 34 points, were Jeanette Fowler and
Jill Martin from Whitehill Golf Club.
Everyone agreed it had been a fun day and
after the golf the ladies sat down to a buffet
meal followed by the presentation of the
prizes of beautiful plants.
Attached photos show the Granny Trophy
being presented to Eileen Chard (left) by
Margaret Broadbent, and the floral prizes
