2016-2017

Annual Repor t
Success, like life, is a journey, not a destination. It
depends on the integration and cooperation of diverse
stakeholders; in the case of Arts for Learning that
includes educators, parents, artists, other arts and
nonprofit professionals, community partners, our Board
and StART Board members, and, most importantly, the
students that we serve. You, our donors and funders, also
help to shepherd us along this path. You provide essential
support that not only sustains our most effective,
proven programs but also the innovative community-
based projects we have recently undertaken that inspire
students to learn, create, and connect.

Our journey this year has centered on deepening our

impact by providing multiple opportunities for students
to interact with our highly skilled teaching artists. These
residencies vary in length, from one week to one year,
but offer the richest potential for creative learning
by giving students time to process unfamiliar ideas,
construct new understandings, and apply the concepts
they have learned. This approach is exemplified by our
Fresh StART program, highlighted here in the annual
report, which engages students in the creation of
public art. The content of each Fresh StART residency
is authenticit is student driven, problem based, and
developed in collaboration with local partners. When we
can help students have a lasting and positive impact in
their community, we count that as success.

Fresh StAR T
Fresh StART is a program aimed to engage underserved communities
in unified, school-based efforts to improve neighborhoods through

a neighborhoods sense of pride and identity by improving an
underused location with public art inspired by local students.

2016 Arts Champion
Jana Weeks, Art Teacher at Riley Elementary and Arts for Learning has blown Ben Franklin Elementarys mind! My
Benjamin Franklin Elementary in Vigo County students ask me on a regular basis when the next visiting artist is coming
to see us. We have been very fortunate to have many artist visits; each
one left us mesmerized. Last year, we had the pleasure of hearing the
most beautiful harp music [played by teaching artist Melissa Gallant]
throughout our halls on the last day before Christmas Break. Parents and
students softened their hearts and you could hear kindness throughout
the school. I bet people around the school could see the glow we had!
Adzooks Puppets not only taught my students how to recycle things
around the house to form puppets, but also inspired them to get up,
move, and be creative. [Teaching artists Robin Holm and David Wright]
thrilled my students into thinking and problem solving that will change
them for the better every day.

[Teaching artist] Robin McBride visited us on an ordinary day, but when

she left our school the way I looked at clay changed. I learned from her
more in one day than I did in my [college] clay classes over a semester.
When you have a moment to become the learner, when you have been
the teacher, those moments are priceless. Arts for Learning gave me
that moment and I want to thank you. Thank you for making our schools
better! Thank you for expanding our minds and creative thinking! Thank
you for allowing me to be part of something bigger!!!

Arts for Learning has opened a bigger door for my students and me:
We are no longer the hungry artists that we started as, but now are
highly motivated, creative creatures that want more! More visits! More
learning! More extraordinary artists to come knocking at our doors!!! Arts
for Learning is a wonderful, resourceful, worth-every-minute learning
experience!

I am so thankful that my students have had the experiences that Arts for
Learning has given them! I am so thankful that we have strong voices in
the arts to teach our children! Thank you for this personal growth year
that Arts for Learning has provided my schools and me!!! Thank you with
