Opening statement
The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is a world-leading agency providing the most comprehensive
range of marine geospatial information across the globe. This information is supplied to commercial shipping,
defence navies and maritime organisations for the primary purpose of safe navigation and global trade efficiency.
It also supports other marine activities including economic development, environmental protection, resource
exploration and utilisation, scientific research and security and defence.
Our Navigation Specialists are experienced mariners who are responsible for maintaining and producing safe,
comprehensive and up-to-date volumes of Sailing Directions and Section IV Notice to Mariners for the Royal Navy
and commercial shipping market.
Navigation Specialists are deployed into either the Impact Analysis Group or the Publication Production team within
the Digital Products, Services and Publications Group with opportunity to interchange between teams.
Tasks, expectations/deliverables
Within the Impact Analysis Team, Navigation Specialists will undertake the following tasks:
Assess the significance of data contained within new UK and Foreign Government charts, new information
contained in Foreign Government Hydrographic Office (FGHO) Sailing Directions, photographic views and reports of
survey from HM ships and contract companies
Maintain the Sailing Directions volumes accordingly through the steady state maintenance process using desktop
publishing software
Liaise with and advise other Navigation Specialists, Production Technicians and Regional Teams within UKHO and
respond to external enquiries from customers, Harbour Masters and other authorities, both in UK and abroad
Within the Publications Team, Navigation Specialists will undertake the following tasks:
Work with the Production Technicians to prepare, amend and technically edit Sailing Directions using desktop
publishing and other specialist software, for delivery to the Digital Imaging Department to meet the copy-ready
production schedule in accordance with quality documentation
Produce section IV notices for Weekly Notices to Mariners (NMs), for navigationally significant information
On a rotational basis with other Navigation Specialists in the team, act as the Section IV Editor, preparing the
weekly Section IV NMs for publication
Support the production of Port Approach Guides, ensuring Sailing Directions material supplied is up to date,
delivered to specification and on time
As appropriate, support specification creation and pre-compilation meetings for new edition and new charts
Liaise with and advise other Navigation Specialists, Production Technicians and regional teams within the business
and respond to external enquiries from customers, Harbour Masters and other authorities, both in the UK and
abroad

Recent seagoing experience, including practical experience of navigation (including the use of ECDIS/ENCs) with
appropriate supporting qualifications, e.g. Deck Officer Certificate of Competence, Royal Navy STCW 95 (Officer of
the Watch) certificate, RYA Yachtmaster
Practical experience in distinguishing navigationally significant information from large volumes of data presented
Ability to deal methodically with information and keep accurate records of the actions taken
Confident and competent user of the MS Office suite with the ability to learn and apply new software, including
bespoke packages
