Kalamata Historic Center Walking Tour
You are in one of the most beautiful cities of the Peloponnese!
It is not possible for us not to welcome you and guide you to the most historical and
interesting places in our hometown.
We will pick you up from your hotel and in less than 10 minutes we will be in the square of
the Ypapanti, the largest church and patron saint of the city, from where our tour begins.
The selection of the starting point of our tour is not by chance! In 1986 a large earthquake
exposed the ancient city of Kalamata (Farai), hiding just under the sanctuary of Ypapantis
Church. Parts of the fortification wall of the ancient city, statues and pottery sherds, slept for
centuries in the bowels of the church and now they are in the Acropolis Museum of Athens.
We will continue walking around the citys castle, the one that Villehardouins family decided
to built during the 12th century. At its base, we will have the opportunity to see two houses
preserved from 1821, despite the years that have passed and the earthquake that tore down all
the other buildings. We will see also the first hospital of free Kalamata, after 300 years of slavery
under the Turks.
We will admire the church of St. John, which was built inside a cave and was used by the
Greeks as a secret school for their children during the Ottoman era.
The next highlight of our adventure is the tour of the Castle. Walking through the narrow-
cobbled alleys, among the ruins of the salon of Isabella and her father William, we will feel like the
princesses or the knights of our childhood fairy tales.
After that, the monastery of nuns, will bring us back to reality and the modern history of
Kalamata. Inside the monastery, the nuns were the first ones taught how to cultivate the silkworm
and the art of weaving silk handkerchiefs. In that same place, they taught it to the young women of
the region. Silk scarves become Kalamatas trademark well known throughout Greece.
Our ride continues south, to the oldest church of the city, the church of Agioi Apostoloi. It was
built in the 11th century AD. The churchs square, picturesque and full of stores, coffee shops and
restaurants, will make you want to take your time and rest. So, you can relax and enjoy your
coffee in one of the many small traditional cafes or buy souvenirs or traditional local products.
The pedestrian street that we will follow later is Kalamatas commercial center. You will be
able to admire some of the greatest neoclassical and classical buildings but also buildings from
the inter war era. The main city hall will impress you.
Surely by then you will be hungry. Since you are in Kalamata, it is not possible to miss the
opportunity to taste our Mediterranean cuisine. We have so many choices from which you can
choose the one that satisfies most your preferences.
You will never regret choosing Kalamata as your destination! We are waiting for you!

We will pick you up from your hotel, preferably in the morning and in less than an hour we
will be in Ithomi hill where Ancient Messene is located.
During our trip, we will adjust our tour to your wishes and needs. You will also have the
opportunity to enjoy the stunning scenery and learn about the myths, traditions and secrets of the
area.
Our first stop will be at the source of village Mauromati. We will recount of the legend that
reveals the name of the village: a myth that reaches back to the years of ancient Greeks
mythology and is related to the upbringing of Zeus.
You will be amazed by the structures of the citys fortification wall and the only surviving
entrance gate to the ancient city. They are standing there since 369 BC. We will enter through the
Arcadian Gate and can admire its splendor and try to imagine how it felt to be a Messenian warrior
going to battle.
We will walk through the same paths where once stepped Epaminondas, the famous
General from Ancient Thiva, who founded the city of Ancient Messene on the ruins of Ancient
Ithomi. Ruins that were the result of the Spartans invasion.
Just above the ancient city, Nikos traditional coffee shop, will host us for about an hour
before entering the main site. There, you will learn everything about the foundation of the city, its
history and the continuously changing history of its rulers.
We will take you to the entrance and let you walk around at your convenience, as long as
you need within the ancient city. When you will finish, we will be waiting right there with cool water
and ready to answer all your questions. The small Archaeological Museum which will be our next
stop and will amaze you!

Pylos & Methoni Day Trip
Our trip will begin from your hotel and crossing streets filled with olive and orange trees but
also with myths and traditions, for about an hour, we will reach the hill in front of Pylos.
The first time that you confront the bay of Navarino, combined with the castle and the green
colors of Pylos, is going to be one of the moments of the tour that you will never forget.
From up there, where is going to be also our first stop, you will be able to see both small and
larger islands. The huge rocks in front of us look like an entrance to the sea and are parts of the
island of Sfaktiria.
At the southern end of this island, you will be able to admire the ruins of a fortification wall
built by the Spartans, in 425 BC, during the Peloponnesian war.
The picturesque town of Pylos will welcome us soon. While enjoying your coffee at the
town's main square we will learn everything about its history. There, among the plane trees,
stands the monument of the Three Admirals from Russia, France and England. You will also learn
stories and tales of these three philhellenes.
Before we leave Pylos, we will make our next stop at the castle known as Niokastro. It was
built by the Turks in 1573 AD, but like every other castle in the region it constantly changed hands.
As you walk the cobblestone streets you will admire the four cylindrical towers and the aqueduct,
a legacy left by the Venetians.
Our next stop will be the nearby town of Methoni. The castle of this town is one of the most
impressive of the Peloponnese, since one of its parts, Bourtzi, reaches into the sea, like an
artificial ... island! Walking between walls and battlements, it will whisper its own secrets, starting
from 1500 AD, when Venetian soldiers started to build it.
After so many battles, naval battles and castle constructions, you will get hungry. The tavern
under the walls of Methoni, almost inside the sea and overlooking Bourtzi, will satisfy your hunger.
Alternatively, we can directly take the way back, to have the time to enjoy your afternoon swim in
Kalamata.

Palace of Nestor & Voidokilia Beach Day Trip
Our trip will begin from your hotel and crossing traditional villages filled with olive and
orange trees but also myths and creeds, for about an hour, we will reach the ridge of the village
Ano Englianos.

With a brand-new construction of the new protective shelter (made in June 2016) the
Palace of Nestor permits the visitors to experience the Mycenaean past of Messenia. This palace
was the administrative seat of the kingdom of Pylos, and Messenia was governed from here
during the 13th century B.C. It is the best-preserved Mycenaean palace in all mainland Greece and
the second most important center of the Mycenaean world after Mycenae itself. It is a complex of
various buildings. It consists of 105 ground floor apartments. It has four main buildings (central
ones, wine store) and some smaller ones. The most important compartments of the palace are the
big rectangular "throne room" with its circular hearth, the room with the clay bath tub and the
stores with their numerous storage vessels. The walls of the palace were decorated with fine wall
paintings.

Very close to the palace, we will see the most impressive, largest excavated Mycenaean
vaulted tomb of the area. It was built in c.1550-1500 BC and it is estimated that it received at least
17 burials. The excavations brought to light interesting pottery and valuable small items now on
display in the archaeological museum of Chora.

Our next stop will be the nearby beach of Voidokilia. Only a few kilometers from Nestor
Palaces we will encounter one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. You will be impressed by
its perfectly round shape and the golden colored sand. An experience not to be missed is to swim
in its turquoise waters that lies ahead.

The tavern on the seafront, in the nearby village of Yalova will appease our hunger.
Alternatively, we can directly take the way back, so you have time to enjoy your afternoon swim in
Kalamata.

Diros Caves & Villages of Mani Day Trip
Our tour will begin from your hotel and in less than an hour, we will be at the first village of
Manis region, Kardamili. Built entirely on the coast of Outer Mani, Kardamili will host us for a
coffee so as to have the opportunity to admire the wonderful view to the sea.
Next village, Stoupa, will surprise you with the beauty of the organized beaches.
The landscape will change immediately as we will be crossing the imaginary borders of Inner
Mani. The rest of the villages that we will encounter are literally "climbed" in these wild and
beautiful mountains. During our journey, you will learn all those historical elements that make Mani
a magical region. You will also hear stories about the independent and tough natured locals.
We will not miss the opportunity to stop at two or three churches. Each one has great
historical interest as they were built between the 11th and 12th century. Our perseverance with
them has nothing to do with their deep religionists residents, but with the historical data that they
can provide.
However, to reach the Caves of Diros, we should cross over the gulf of Itilo, the most
impressive highlight of the tour. The combination of colors, the wild beauty of the mountains and
the turquoise waters of the bay create images that you will never forget!
Located at the top of the Mani between the town of Pirgos Dirou and Areopolis the entrance
of Diros' Caves is a few meters above the sea level. When you enter the cave, you walk down a
stairway to an underground lake where there are boats waiting. You will be given a life-vest and
then each boat gets a guide who uses poles to journey through the caverns and tunnels, which
are eerily lit and adorned with stalactites and stalagmites, many with interesting names. You will
pass through some sections just wide enough to allow your boat, where you should duck your
head and then enter an enormous subterranean room where you can hear the voices of people on
other boats in the distance.
Our exploration will make you hungry. As we return we can stop at Stoupa and dine at one
of the amazing traditional cuisine restaurants in front of the sea. Alternatively, we can immediately
return to your hotel to enjoy your afternoon swim.
This experience will be unforgettable!

Our first stop for photos will be in Keadas. This was where the Ancient Spartans would bring

Modern Sparta was built exactly in the same location as the ancient city. Its origins are from
October 20, 1834 when King Otto signed the edict for the construction of the new town.
The ancient site that we will visit afterwards, will astound you. The Acropolis of Ancient
Sparta and its monuments, are still standing from the sixth century BC, in defiance of all the
centuries gone by. We will see the Ancient Theatre, the Temple of Chalkioikos Athena, the circular
building, the remains of the stores of ancient agora, a Persian Gallery and many more. You will
have information for each monument that we will see, and for all the events of everyday life of the
ancient Spartans and their kings.

Sparta. We will feel the respect that harbored the Spartans to their kings and we will be able to
understand their frugal lifestyle.
Our next stop will take us back to the history of modern Sparta. The Olive Oil Museum, will

Ancient Olympia Day Trip
Our tour will begin from your hotel and in less than two hours, after crossing the valley of
river Alpheus, we will be in the Western Peloponnese and specifically in Olympia. During our trip,
you will learn everything about Ancient Olympia, which was not a simple city with permanent
residents, but a sanctuary of buildings associated with the ancient Olympic Games.
The history of its foundation began in 776 BC, when three Greek kings, decided to turn the
interest of their soldiers to something else other than wars. Sports! But the ethos and the Olympic
ideals of the ancient Greeks, the excellent preparation of the organizers and the massive
participation of athletes made these Games become the most famous and important event of the
ancient world.
Once you know every detail concerning the monuments you will encounter in the
archaeological site, we will take you to the entrance and let you browse at your convenience, as
long as you want.
From the first buildings that you come across, you will be overwhelmed by the energy of
athletes who once used them. The ancient gymnasium and the Palaestra, were the places where
athletes used to practice before the games.
Immediately after, you will find the Workshop of Phidias, the laboratory in which one of the
Seven Wonders of the World, the golden statue of Zeus was created. Leonidaion, was Olympias
hotel and hosted distinguished guests of the Games from 330B.C.
You will have the opportunity to admire Vouleuterio, the building in which the Elean Senate,
whose members were responsible for the organization of the games was situated. The Temples of
Zeus and Hera will leave you speechless with the magnificence of their architecture.
Entering the ancient stadium through the Crypt, you will feel the agony of the athletes who
were taking part in the games in front of thousands of spectators. You will have the opportunity to
be photographed at the point where, even today, the lighting of the Olympic Flame takes place.
But your adventure will not be over yet. The museum of Olympia, one of the largest and most
important museums of Greece, will make you feel the pulse of these times, the splendor and
magic of the Olympic idea.
We will wait for you at the exit of the museum and we will take you to the nearest restaurant
to relax or optionally to try the excellent Mediterranean cuisine. Before we take our way back, we
can visit modern Olympia with the traditional souvenir shops.
This experience will be unforgettable!

Mycenae & Nafplio Day Trip
Our trip will begin from your hotel and after an hour we will be crossing Nemea and its
famous and impressively green and neatly vineyards. Immediately after that we will have the
chance to see Argos, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. As a strategic
location on the fertile plain of Argolis, Argos was a major stronghold during the Mycenaean era.

The first time that you confront the Cyclopean masonry of the Acropolis of Mycenae, even
from far away, is going to be one of the moments of the tour that you will never forget. Acropolis,
is accessed through the famous Lion Gate, the symbol of the Mycenaean rulers' power. The gate
was named after the two opposing lions carved in relief and set into the relieving triangle, a typical
feature of Mycenaean architecture, over the door.

But this is not the only interesting thing that we will see inside. A building named the
'Granary', because its basement contained carbonized grain, is one of the things that will
fascinate you. Southern we will visit the Grave Circle A, whose six large shaft graves contained
numerous gold objects and other works of art. Beyond this is a series of buildings, possibly the
residences of high officials: The House of the Warrior Krater, the Ramp House, the South
House and the Citadel House. The citadel's religious center, along the south fortification wall,
includes the Temple of the Idols, the House of the Frescoes, Tsountas's House and the
Priest's House. A staircase and a large processional street connected these shrines to the
palace.

Five hundred meters away from the entrance of Acropolis we will have also the chance to
see the "Treasure of Atreus" or Tomb of Agamemnon. It is an impressive "tholos" tomb on the
Panagitsa Hill at Mycenae, Greece, constructed during the Bronze Age around 1250 BC.

Our next stop is the beautiful and breathtaking town of Nafplio. This very popular town
owes its establishment in Nafplion, the famous sailor and member of the Argonauts. We will walk
along the castles of Acronafplia, erected for the first time in the late 3rd century BC and it took its
current form after additions of the Byzantines, Franks, Venetians and Turkish conquerors. From
up there we will be able to admire the Golf of Nafplio with the beautiful Castle/island called Bourtzi
and a huge, well-maintained and probably the best castle in Greece called Palamidi. It was built in
1714 by the Venetians and is the finest sample of the Venetian fortifications in Greece.

After a tour through the narrow alleys of the old city, we will let ourselves be fascinated by
the heady scent of traditional dishes that we will have the opportunity to taste (optionally), among
the streets and houses of old and new architecture.

classical times Argos was a powerful rival of Sparta for dominance over the Peloponnese.

In the peaceful inland of Epidaurus, with its perfect climate, we will reach the sanctuary of
the god-physician Asklepios, the most famous healing center of the Greek world. Its fame and
recognition quickly spread beyond the limits of the Argolis as it is considered the birthplace of
medicine.

After entering the archeological site, we will firstly have the chance to see the Ancient
theatre. It hosted music and singing, since there was a belief that the observation of dramatic
shows had positive effects on mental and physical health. We will walk in front of
Tholos/Thymele, where, according to the legend, God healed the patients inside the earth. Other
things that you will see are the Stoa of Abaton, a mysterious operating room where the patient
achieved healing through slumbers and consequently through the contact with the divine and the
Katagogion, hotel for the patients. Building E, Ceremonial Banqeting Hall ("Gymnasium"),

century BC), and all the myths and historical data relating to the creation of the Acropolis.
Some of the world-famous attractions that are preserved until today and you will be able to
admire are:
The Parthenon, symbol of civilization and democracy not only in Greece but also in the
whole world. Built in honor of the goddess Athena for saving the city and the Athenian victories
against the Persians. Inside the temple there was the golden- ivory statue of Athena, who was
depicted fully armed but peaceful!
The Propylaea, the imposing entrance, built on an ancient portal. Regarded as one of
the masterpieces of classical architecture.
The Erechtheion, which took its name from the mythical king Erechtheus. On the south
side of the temple you will have also the opportunity to admire the "caryatids".
The Temple of Athena Nike, built on a tower of the Mycenaean wall. It is dedicated to
prehistoric goddess Nike, the protector of gates.
After about two hours walking the main archaeological site, it is time for the Acropolis
Museum, one of the most modern and impressive museums in the world.
But your adventure is not over yet. We will have the opportunity to visit the traditional narrow
alleys of Plaka, one of the oldest districts of modern Athens. There, between souvenir shops,
cafes and traditional taverns we will be able to eat and rest before making our way back.
It is going to be an experience that you will never forget! We are waiting for you!
