What is an Eclipse?
In general terms, an eclipse is the total or partial obscuring of one celestial
body by another. It may occur when one celestial body passes in front of
another therefore cutting off some or all of its light. It may also occur
when a celestial body passes through all or parts of the shadow of another
celestial body. As for us, living on this Earth, there are two primary types
of eclipses, which can be viewed from Earth. They are Lunar Eclipses
and Solar Eclipses. These are celestial events when the light of the Sun
or the Moon is partially or totally cut off. However, before dealing with
the subject proper, let us have a rough idea of the Sun and the Moon.
What is our Sun?

Moon is our nearest celestial neighbour. It is a satellite of the earth and it revolves round the earth at a mean
distance of 384,402 kms, almost keeping the same face to us. Many of us would have wondered what causes
the phases of the Moon and how those happen. We see that the appearance of the Moon changes over time.
But why? The good way to understand the phases of the Moon is to examine an Earth-Moon-Sun diagram
given below.
Thus when the Moon comes in-between our Earth and the Sun, Amavasya or New Moon is caused. On that
day, with no light of the Sun falling on the visible face of the Moon, to get it reflected on to our earth, we get
a dark moonless night. However, when the Earth comes in between the Sun and the Moon, light from the
Sun illuminates the face of the Moon visible to us, causing a Full Moon or Pournami. These are the regular
recurring monthly phenomena, which we are well aware of.

Shri V. S. Kalyanraman, was a mathematician and an amateur astronomer by training, a bureaucrat by profession
and a student of astrology by passion. He had his traditional training in astrology from his teens, under a legendary
Namboodiri scholar and took a vow not to turn a professional. With distinction in Mathematics Honours from
the University of Madras, he commenced his career as a teacher in the Kerala Educational Department and
entered the Civil Services, in the Ministry of Communications and held various senior positions before retiring
as a senior officer heading the Training Centre of the department.
He gained distinction in Tamil and did his Diploma in Management from IGNOU and a Diploma in Counselling,
after his retirement. After a stint of story writing in Tamil, in the early fifties, Prof. Kalyanraman turned to serious
study of Saivasiddhanta (under late Sri Sachidanandam Pillai), Philosophy (under Dr. Mahadevan) Psychology
(under Prof. Chari), Vedic Mathematics (inspired by late Bharati Krishna Teertha), Bharatiya Ganita Sastra
(With late Sri R V Vaidya, Secretary, Calendar Reforms Committee and Late Sri N C Lahiri, Prof. Koru and
others), Jyothisha (Astronomy) and Hindu Astrological systems (under Sri Raghava Josier, Sri Sankar Jois,
P Namboodiri and many others), including Vastu Sastra, Vedic Numerology and allied disciplines. His effort
was only to understand the scientific principles enshrined in them. He has done immense studies into the
ancient Indian contributions towards, mathematics, astronomy and allied disciplines (purely non-professional
activity). As a college student, he learnt panchanga computations from late C.G. Rajan. He was associated
with the Indian Institute of Scientific Heritage, since its inception. It is pertinent to recollect here that Prof
Kalyanraman and his family were very instrurmental in providing data for our very popular English Panchanga
for three consecutive years.
Amongst many inspirers and guides that he has worked with are late Prof. Koru (In editing Malayalam editions of
Leelavati and Karanapadhathi) and late K. K. Kurup (editor of Jyothishamaasika). As a student, he was fortunate
to meet the late Shri Bharati Shree Krishna Tirtha, exponent of Vedic Mathematics; Bhagavan Ramana and

He has contributed much as a freelancer in writing to magazines in English, Tamil and Malayalam, under the
non-de-plume of Bhaskaradaasan Bhattotpala Veeyeskay, Utpala, VSK, Bharadwaaja, Ajaathasatru,
Yajnavalkya and many others. He handled the regular monthly features and book reviews for the The

Vyatipata from 21320 to 22640 of the sum of the Nirayana longitudes of the Sun and the Moon. Vydhruti and Vyatipata
punyakaala are observed on the day when the yogas prevail for 1 hours or more, when Sraddha is performed by the
