Coursework & Standards Based Grading:
Detailed information including links to homework, classwork information, and weekly updates are
available on the class website at: http://math6helm.weebly.com. Grades will be entered in SKYWARD. Its
the responsibility of parents and students to check for missing work and problem areas before each
grading period ends. Your students SKYWARD account can be accessed from Evergreen School district
website or the class website.
The coursework in this class is intended to sharpen and build on students problem solving skills,
procedural fluency, and conceptual understanding while building an important foundation for future
math work. Students will be assessed on their progress toward meeting goals and expectations in two
domains:
WASHINGTON LEARNING STANDARDS (Math Grades)
Scores are based on the average of multiple demonstrations of skill level for each learning
standard. Students will regularly set goals and make plans that will help them achieve proficiency.
Math grades in the Standards Based Gradebook communicate where each student is in their
understanding and use of specific skills and where they are in their goal-setting cycle.
Grading Scale: 4 (advanced), 3 (proficient), 2 (approaching performance standard), 1 (well-
below performance standard).

VIKING PRINCIPLES STANDARDS (Behavior Grades)
Students also receive scores for homework, their workbook, citizenship and participation in class.
These relate specifically to the Viking Principles, which are Pacifics school-wide performance
standards. Students are expected to be Self-directed Learners (VP1), Quality Producers (VP2), and
Community Contributors (VP3).
Grading Scale: + (exceeds expectations), M (meets expectations), (below expectations).

Independent Practice:
Students will have regular weekly homework on IXL, which can be accessed from the class website. To be
successful, they will need to spend a minimum of 60 min. per week completing their online practice, with
a minimum Smart Score of 80 in Level A (All). Parents can monitor student progress in IXL with reports
generated from the program. Students may have additional homework, particularly if they have been absent or
not using class time wisely.

Classroom Expectations:
On the first day of class, all of the students discussed their expectations for our math class this year. From
that conversation, these general expectations of ourselves, our classmates, and the teacher have been
formed:
Be respectful of people, materials, and time.
Work together.
Work hard and try our best.
Listen and participate actively.
Be kind in words and actions.
Have FUN!

Appropriate Technology Use:
Students will have access to Chromebooks daily in math class. They will receive instruction on safe and
appropriate technology use throughout the year from core teachers. Students are expected to navigate
online curriculum and web resources within the parameters that each teacher sets for the student.
Headphones or earbuds will be useful for some of the activities that we do in class, but are NOT required.
Teachers will be using a program called Hapara, which allows live screen monitoring during work
sessions in class. Students that violate school technology policies may lose access.
Cell phones are not permitted in math class. Students are expected to silence their devices and stow them
in their backpacks during class. They may not keep them in their pockets or respond to parent phone
calls or texts during class time. If there is a special circumstance on a particular day, please send a note to
let me know.

Other Classroom Policies:
Students should not bring snacks or drinks to class, with the exception of water bottles. Students should
get into the habit of using the restroom in passing time between classes. Students may use a bathroom
pass during work time (not instruction), but should reserve that for urgent situations. If your child has a
medical reason to use the restroom frequently, please let me know.
